A customer of Bamboo’s contacted us the other day looking to see if our User Profile Sync application (http://store.bamboosolutions.com/ps-45-5-user-profile-sync-release-13.aspx) has the ability to import users from AD to their MOSS 2007 portal. I first thought this was an odd request as SharePoint provides this functionality out of the box hence currently User Profile Sync does not provide this functionality. After calling up the customer to chat about their requirements and making sure they knew about the import ability out of the box, I learned that MOSS 2007 apparently does have this limit. So I dove off into our trusty online community of the World Wide Web to see if there is a nifty command line hidden in the SP trusty STSADM tool and at first I thought I found it –
Stsadm –o sync
But come to find out this controls a whole another box worms! Did you know that on individual Site Collections contain User Information lists, same lists you find in WSS v3? At first I didn’t but thanks to this great blog posting by Andrew Woodward, http://www.21apps.com/2008/02/user-profiles-why-do-my-changes-not.html, I now see that the stsadm –o sync command pushes the MOSS 2007 Profile database changes to Site Collections not from AD to MOSS 2007 profiles.
The moral of the story, from what I can tell today, there is no option to push changes from AD to MOSS 2007 more than once a day, who knows maybe Bamboo will add this option to the User Profile Sync in the future
.
Side note, if you would like to know more about SharePoint User Management in both WSS v3 and MOSS 2007, might I suggest this great article (notice how I keep ranking everything as GREAT!) written by Bamboo’s own Lam Le that can be found here - http://store.bamboosolutions.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10829&cNode=3H2X0D
