How to remove the Web Part Title Bar link.

There are some cases where you want to display the title bar of a list view Web Part, but don't want to actually include a link to the list itself.  This can be done very easily by following these simple steps -

  1. Log into your SharePoint site as a user who has Designer or higher rights.
  2. Locate a list view Web Part that you want to remove the link from, and click on the drop down arrow for the Web Part edit menu.  In this example, we are working with the Announcements list view Web Part found on the Home page of the Team Site.


  3. Select the option Modify Shared Web Part.
  4. On the right side of the screen, the Web Part Properties tool pane will appear.  Expand the section called Advanced.


  5. Notice the field Title URL.  Delete the contents of the text box and click OK.

The link to the Announcements list has now been removed while still providing a title to the list view Web Part.

As an added tip, if you want the Title bar of a given Web Part removed completely, open the Web Part Properties tool pane.  Instead of expanding the section Advanced, expand the section Appearance.  At the bottom of this section is a drop down control called Chrome Type.  Chrome Type controls 2 visual attributes of the Web Part; the Title bar that sits on top of the Web Part, and the Border that boxes in the content of the Web Part.  Chrome Type provides the following options:

Default - Displays Title only.

None - Neither the Title nor the Border is displayed when page is in display mode. (note, while in Edit Page mode the Title of the Web Part is always displayed)

Title and Border - Displays both the Title of the Web Part and a Border around the content.

Title Only - Displays Title of the Web Part only.

Border Only - Displays a Border around the Web Part content only.

Hi Jeff,

When I try to remove the link of the title for a web part, it works as soon as I hit "OK" or "Apply". If I refresh the page, or visit it later, the link comes back up again. The web part of a list web part. Any thoughts?

Hello Khaled,

Sorry for the long delay to your question.  We did several different tests and discovered something interesting.   Did you by chance modify the properties again (not necessarily the Title URL field, but any other setting) of the list view Web Part?  if so SharePoint tries to be helpful and readds this URL back into the Title URL field.

I have also seen this issue occur when you create a site template.  When you deploy that site template, I have noticed two things occur to List View Web Parts

1. If you turn off the Full Tool Bar for a Web Part within a site template, the newly created site from that Site Template, shows the Full Tool Bar and you have to turn it off again.  This is also true if you "Modfy the current view" instead of selecting an existing view in the list View Web Part tool pane.

2. The Title URL field is filled in automatically when a site is deployed with a site template.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. Not a problem on the delay.

We changed the width of the web part. But basically, we created the list then added it to the page, and changed the width and that was it. Then I tried taking out that link, but to no avail. Is there a solution?

Hi Khaled,

i have found out, that the Title URL field will only be filled, if it´s empty. So i just copied the link of the Page, where the Webpart is deployed, so the browser only refreshes the site.

I hope my poor english belongs to make you understand what i mean ^^

There is one workaround. You may use "Title Url" as "http://about:blank". Feel free to see it at malcan.com/.../Workflow%20for%20SharePoint.aspx

Thank you for the help on this.   I thought I was going crazy after removing the title URL and seeing it work, only to revert back after I remove the title URL on another web part on a page.

about:blank works fine.

Check out this solution. This removes the link with a simple jQuery from the Title Bar.
