Introducing Chart Plus Revolution Pack – Advanced Charting Functionalities Using List Rollup and Security Trimming

In late March, Bamboo announced the winner of the Revolution Contest, Armand Brunelle, Senior VP of Technology at Castle Pines Capital.  Armand says SharePoint is the best tool for his company to use and it helps them “tie everything together and put it all in one spot.”  His winning idea is a Chart Plus Plus Web Part, which will function by having Chart Plus be fed off of List Rollup.

As Lam mentioned in his blog, at Bamboo we take great pride in the fact that we listen carefully to our customer needs when implementing SharePoint solutions.  Our engineering team has been working furiously on this product, which integrates our existing product List Rollup with the enhancement of Chart Plus to use List Rollup.  This month, we finally have a candidate build for Armand to try out.  These past couple weeks, I had the pleasure of working with Armand to test and integrate our new product Chart Plus Revolution Pack into his environment.  This is what Armand has to say:  The new Chart Plus sourcing from List Rollup Web Part will allow us to place on chart on a portal page without having multiple charts and using security trimming to filter data for individual users.  Keeps the design clean and easier to maintain.  The security on the individual lists being rolled up get passed onto the chart so there is nothing more to do!....And, It is addicting.

Chart Plus Revolution Pack is available on our Storefront  now.  It is the bundle of the Bamboo List Rollup Web Part and Bamboo Chart Plus Web Part with enhancements.  Please check it out.

I would like to share with SharePoint users how the new product works.  It can be used in various cases such as:

  •  If you have several projects and at the program/PMO level you would like to roll up and show the statuses of bugs such as open, closed, resolved, you can use our next version of List Rollup to roll up the Lists of bugs from various projects and present the status by populating the charts via Chart Plus.  Similar scorecards can be done with Chart Plus and ListRollup that show open, closed tasks for projects through charts.  Same thing can be shown with tickets for Customer Support site.  You can also apply security trimming so that specific charts are shown to specific users based on their permission.

  • If you are a financial company or a hosting company where you want to roll up the data and show your customers’ data in one place where user A can only see data set A, that’s do-able as well.

Here I’m showing the example of a financial company who wants to display the balance sheet to the following customers:  Fusion Industries, Chi Corp, Connector LLC, RAIN LLC and Roots Corp where Fusion Inc. can only see Fusion’s financial data and no one else.  You can restrict permission at the List level or at the Item level.

1.       Data:  Here I’m showing 2 Lists.  However, you can work with as many Lists as you want.  This is Test1 List:

and Test2 List:

2.       I want to set permission where Fusion Inc.’s user can only access and view data from Test1 List.  From Settings, List Settings, Permission for this List, I can add permission for Fusion's account:

From Actions, selecting Edit Permissions. Then, from New, Add New Users to add Fusion's account:

3.       Setting up List Rollup of the two Lists (Test1 and Test2) using Bamboo List Rollup Web PartCreating new web page by selecting Create from Site Actions. Then under Web Pages, selecting Web Part Page.

Adding  Bamboo List RollUp Web Part by selecting the Checkbox next to Bamboo.ListRollUp.WebPart.

Entering data:

Dataview of the 2 Lists from List RollUp for user with access to both Lists:

When Fusion user logs in, this is the Dataview from List RollUp for Fusion user with access to Test1 List only:

4.       Setting up chart using the upcoming Bamboo Chart Plus Web Part enhancement version R1.2.x. Creating new web page by selecting Create from Site Actions. Then under Web Pages, selecting Web Part Page.

Adding  Bamboo Chart Plus Web Part by selecting the Checkbox next to Bamboo Chart Plus Web Part.

Configuring using the Chart Plus Configuration’s Tool Pane:

Chart view for user with access to all data and both Lists:

Notice when Fusion user logs in, with security trimming, Fusion sees the chart with Fusion’s data only since Fusion user has access to Test1 List only:
