Introducing the Bamboo SharePoint Video Library

UPDATEThe SharePoint Video Library is now available in our online store.  Download your free 30-day trial copy today!

Bamboo SharePoint Video Library is the latest addition to Bamboo Labs, our incubator for new products in development at Bamboo. This is a new SharePoint solution designed to make uploading, managing and sharing videos in SharePoint simple and easy.

You could use a standard SharePoint Document Library to store video files.  However, Document Libraries lack some features that help make video content more discoverable and easier to manage, such as:

  • The ability to capture metadata specific to video files (e.g. file type, duration, resolution etc.)
  • Video thumbnails
  • Embedded preview player

Bamboo SharePoint Video Library is based on the standard SharePoint Library.  Like other instances of the SharePoint Library (e.g. Document Library, Picture Library, or Wiki Page Library) it retains all the standard document management capabilities you need to manage your files, including check in/check out, version control and "auditability".

Once installed, Bamboo SharePoint Video Library works exactly like any other SharePoint Library.  When users go to create a new library they can simply choose Video Library as the library type.  From there, uploading and managing files works like any other SharePoint Library.

Below is a list of the default metadata captured by the Bamboo Video Library.  Of course users may add additional columns to the Video Library schema to capture metadata specific to the videos used in your organization.  For example, if your videos can be organized into a discreet set of categories (e.g. training videos, screencasts and interviews) you may find it useful to add a choice column prompting users to categorize the video at upload.

  • Title
  • Video thumbnail (snapshot image)
  • Preview player
  • Video type
  • Description
  • Captured date
  • Keywords (use for search)
  • Duration
  • Audio channels
  • Video resolution
  • Comments

If any of these columns are not useful or relevant to your application, you can simply modify the default view of the library to exclude these columns.

In this first beta version, the Bamboo Video Library supports the following video formats.  In the next version of the solution, we will provide support for the Flash Video File (.FLV) format.

  • Windows Media Video Format (.WMV)
  • MPEG Video File : MPEG-1; MPEG-2 (.MPG; .MPEG)
  • Audio Video Interleave File (.AVI)

Overview:

Default View - All Videos View

Known Issues:

  • Auto generating thumbnail and meta-data from uploaded video file doesn't work on Windows Server 2008 environment
  • Anonymous user: prompt login box in the player
  • Video Library Folder option doesn't work

Please visit our forum for more details: Beta 1 Known issues

Installation:

  • This is a SharePoint solution, so it must be installed on your SharePoint Web front-end server. Extract the zip file and run the setup.bat and then follow the installation instructions and active the Bamboo Video Feature in Site collections Features list. It requires the following components to run:
  • Windows 2003 or Vista OS with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) installed.
  • .Net Framework 2.0 or higher.

Features Planned for the Next Beta Version

  • The ability to import videos directly from YouTube via MashPoint, Bamboo's new data integration platform.
  • Support Flash Video File (.FLV) format
  • Support Silverlight and Flash Player
  • New Album View
  • Display video item metadata via tooltips on hover
  • Ratings & tagging
  • Support Library Folder
  • Compatibility with Firefox browser

Please post all comments, questions and suggestions to the Bamboo SharePoint Video Library forum.

In the next beta, will it support video streaming for silverlight?

Appology for the short description.

I have 3 sibling sites at main site collection. I am using the Bamboo Video Library at one site and would like to access it to the other site.

The problem i m facing is that when i click on 'convert to XSL' from sharepoint designer, it gives me error that the XSL is not valid.

Is there any other way to use the Library View in other sibling sites ?

@Chris: Thank you for your interest in Bamboo SharePoint Video Library. In next beta release, we will support the Silverlight player with video streaming.

@Ahmz: Currently, Video Library does not support the convertion to XSL in SharePoint Designer. Therefor, we cannot convert to XSLT Data View and export to another site.

Thanks,

Binh Nguyen

I to think this is a great webpart. I was looking for something like this for weeks. And this one not only works, but has corporate backing and a community.

As to suggestions. I would like to see some option to re-style the thumbnail view. some css classes or id's so I can for example adjust the video frame to match the site look and feel.

As for anonymous access I would realy like that resolved as I would use this in sharepoint publsing sites with annymous access

Is it possible to set default zoom (size) of video when playing. I am testing this webpart for corporate video e-learning and I would like that initial size would be bigger so users can read dashboard writing. Such small size video presentation is not useful.

It is not user friendly to right-click ob video ->zoom ->full screen

Haven't tried it yet but its definitely a very much needed solution.

Question: Does this store the video files on the file system or in the content database?  Due to large file sizes, storing in the filesystem would be a big plus for us.
