Bamboo Solutions, a leading provider of technologies that enhance Microsoft SharePoint, today announces the availability of a new REST API for SharePoint. REST (Representational State Transfer) is a popular software architectural approach used with distributed web-based applications, and includes principles which outline how software resources are defined and addressed. Bamboo’s REST API for SharePoint is the newest feature of Bamboo’s MashPoint™ platform, a community-driven platform designed to enable enterprise Mashups and integration with SharePoint. The new REST API simplifies the process of integrating web services with SharePoint. MashPoint, including the REST API for SharePoint, is available as a free download from Bamboo’s Web site.
With Bamboo’s REST API for SharePoint, accessing data or functionality within SharePoint is as easy as browsing the Web. Developers can interact with any SharePoint-based resource via REST’s familiar vocabulary of actions. In addition, the Bamboo API automatically translates SharePoint-based data into a wide variety of standard formats, such as ATOM, XHTML, JSON, vCard, iCalendar and more.
As part of this release, Bamboo has published a number of working use cases as a starting point for developers, including the ability to render a SharePoint-based calendar with a Google Calendar. Use cases are graphically displayed with how-to information on Bamboo’s website,
“Our goal with REST API for SharePoint is to make it easier for developers to extend the functionality of SharePoint with additional applications, similar to how we extend SharePoint with our Web Parts,” said Mike Tanner, CEO of Bamboo Solutions. “By connecting SharePoint to the open Web through our REST API for SharePoint, Bamboo is helping to expand the use of SharePoint in the new world of Web 2.0 and enterprise computing.”
