Get New and Deleted Users in Synch with User Profile Sync Release 1.4

For those of you who may not be familiar with User Profile Sync, it is a server side application that allows you to sync user data from various sources to various targets. The sync types are:

  • MOSS 2007 User Profile database to Active Directory. (A)
  • Active Directory to a WSS 3.0 User Information List. (B)
  • WSS 3.0 User Information List to a WSS 3.0 User Information List(s). (C)
  • Active Directory to a Contacts List in WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007. (D)
  • A Contacts List in WSS 3.0 to a WSS 3.0 User Information List(s). (E)

Just plug in some source and target settings, an access account that works for both source and target, and map properties from the source to the properties of your choice in the target and you are done. You can save your settings as a template that you can load up whenever you want to manually run the sync, OR you can use the template file (a XML file) to schedule the sync to run automatically using the NT Scheduler on your SharePoint server. You can also view the log file within the User Profile Sync application to determine if there were any errors or problems with a sync.

For release 1.4, we've made it possible for you to automatically add or delete new users added to AD, a SharePoint User Information List or a Contacts List to a SharePoint User Information List or Contacts List. This feature is available for sync types B, C, D and E. You can also set User Profile Sync to automatically add new users to a specific SharePoint group or more than one group (using Ctrl+click or Shift+click to select more groups). This feature only applies to sync types B, C and E.

Automating this sync type (using the NT Scheduler on your SharePoint server) with these options means that new users added (or deleted) to AD since the last sync will be automatically added to (or deleted from) the target list on the next sync. Since the template file also includes a mapping (see Properties tab) of the AD properties you want to push with the SharePoint User Information List properties you want to populate and update, I'd say the only thing you have to worry about now is where to go to lunch every day.

Hi Stiven,

This product should be installed on your front end  SharePoint servers and is licensed per server.

I hope this answers your question. If you have more specific questions about licensing, please let me know.

Thanks,

Dani P
