Introducing Bamboo Web License Manager

In our ongoing mission to improve our offerings, Bamboo is pleased to announce the latest enhancement to the Bamboo experience:  as of today, we've started rolling out Bamboo Web License Manager (WLM) for use with our products.

What does this change mean to you?  The most significant change is that for all supported products, you will no longer need to activate products on each Web Front-end (WFE) to which it's deployed.  Our new WLM process will allow you to conveniently activate (or deactivate) all supported Bamboo products from the single most convenient location imaginable: Central Admin.  We've prepared a short highlights reel to show you the WLM in action:

Additional benefits of the Bamboo WLM include:

  • Know exactly which Bamboo products you have on your machine/WFE.
  • No longer necessary to know what DLL you need to use, or if it needs to be from the bin or GAC to activate. (Currently, you have to consult this reference table.)
  • Know the exact start and end date of trial versions of Bamboo products which you've deployed.
  • If you have different packs, bundles, etc., installed, you will know exactly which license you are using, i.e., for Calendar Plus, you'll know if the license is "inherited" from PM Central, or if the license in use applies to the individual product (Calendar Plus, in this case).
  • Easily transfer a license key from machine to machine as necessary.

We will be rolling out WLM incrementally over the coming weeks.  The list of products for which WLM is currently available includes:

  • Alert Plus

An up-to-date matrix of which products support WLM will be consistently maintained on the Bamboo Product Packaging and Licensing page.

Please note:  As we continue to roll out WLM, only Bamboo products which are deployed to SharePoint, such as Web Parts and column features, are designed to be activated via WLM. Licenses for our desktop/server applications, such as List Bulk Import, List Bulk Export, User Profile Sync, and SharePoint Desktop Explorer will still require activation via Bamboo's License Manager utility.

About John Anderson

John Anderson joined Bamboo Solutions as Manager of Content & Syndication in May 2008 after a 12-year career at AOL.  New to SharePoint at the time of his hiring, John was tasked with creating a new blog for the just-launched Bamboo Nation community in which he would document his daily SharePoint learning process.  Thus was born the end user-centric SharePoint Blank, for which John authored 200 posts within a year, and which he continues to write today.  Today, John writes SharePoint Blank in addition to his responsibilities as Managing Editor at Bamboo and, while he learned much about SharePoint in his first two years, he gleefully celebrates the release of SharePoint 2010 and the reset button that the new platform represents for SharePoint Blank.
