When you want to store files in SharePoint, you use a Library. There are Document Libraries for documents, Form Libraries for forms, Picture Libraries for ... well, you get the .. er.. idea. But, what do you do when you want to store "rich" media, like video, or even audio? Out-of-the-box, SharePoint just isn't equipped to handle it. Sure, you can store your files in a document library, but they'll be treated like any other generic file type. No thumbnails, no special metadata, and definitely no playback. If pictures deserve their own library in SharePoint, shouldn't videos get one too?

We certainly thought so, which is why we built our new SharePoint Video Library. The Video Library lets you store video or audio files in a library that was built just for them. You can store them locally, or seamlessly link to external locations. The library lets you playback files right inside of it, using a Web-based player. It handles several different file types, including Flash (.flv), Windows Media Video (.wmv), AVI, MP4, MP3, WMA, and more. It collects and displays metadata like recording length, video resolution, and number of audio channels. It even creates thumbnail images automatically!
We created the Video Library, and put in our Bamboo Labs where we worked closely with our users to make sure it got the functionality they wanted. Today, it's graduated from our "Labs", and is available for purchase on our Storefront. If you're looking for a solution to get simple video/audio storage and playback in SharePoint, download your free trial copy today, and see what it can do for you!
