Announcing the SharePoint File Share Library: Why bring your files to SharePoint when you can bring SharePoint to them?

Do you have important content that has been left stranded out on corporate file shares?  SharePoint can be a powerful platform for collaboration and information management in your organization – but only if that information is actually made accessible to SharePoint.  Files that reside out on network file share locations are often excluded from SharePoint.  Sure, we’d like nothing better than to bring them all into SharePoint.  The problem is that importing all those files into SharePoint is an arduous task that we just don’t have the time to tackle.  In addition, many of those files are so impossibly large that it’s impractical to bring them all into SharePoint en masse.  In an ideal situation, we could leave those files where they are and access them from SharePoint as needed, improve their visibility by allowing for metadata association, and make them accessible to users through a familiar construct like the SharePoint document library.  Bamboo’s SharePoint File Share Library is designed to give you precisely those capabilities and more.

The SharePoint File Share Library is now available for both purchase and free 30-day evaluation from the Bamboo storefront.  This new product release has benefited from the feedback of a host of beta customers.  Thanks go out to all who participated in the product's Bamboo Labs beta program.  So what are you waiting for?  Add a full-featured trial download to your cart and discover how easy it is to bring SharePoint to all those files that are currently stranded out on your file shares.

How does the File Share Library handle files with filenames that are illegal in SharePoint (containing &, # etc.) ? Or filestructures that break the 255 character limit?

EricJ - Yes, the File Share Library does handle illegal characters like those you mention.  They are encoded into the item Name column as the files are mapped to the File Share Library.  The true original filename with the special char(s) are stored in the Original Filename column for reference.  The File Share Library is able to work with those files just like any others.

For file structures that break the URL path limit (or Item name limit) that you mention, the File Share Library will not be able to map files or folders that exist on the file system beyond those limits.  It will capture as many file system elements as it can up to that limit, but it will not map/import past it.

Thanks,

Wes

Does it respect network permissions or do they have to be set up as well in SharePoint.  For example on my file share area, Engineer folder is only acessible to the Engineer department (permissions set on network) do those same people have to be places on the Document Library on SharePoint?
