October, 2009:
- 10/9/09 - SharePoint 2010: The Enterprise Platform (Made 4 the .NET)
I’m repeatedly cornered to discuss SharePoint and a common discussion that occurs is the wide spread usage of SharePoint as an “Enterprise Platform” or “Enterprise Portal”. SharePoint in Organisations (state and local government, private enterprises, etc.) are moving towards a Microsoft Platform in droves and migrating their SAP, Oracle, BEA, IBM, OpenText and EMC enterprise stacks. I’m exaggerating slightly as this is the Organisations I’m exposed to, but hear me out.
- 10/9/09 - Planning for SharePoint 2010 – Upgrade Planning Part 3 (Chandima.Net Blog for SharePoint solutions)
In the last two posts I showed you how to move your data tier to your new 64bit Farm. That is you moved all your databases and tested that you now have a 64bit based database server to host all the content databases. Let’s look at how we can move the application server and the web front end server tiers. In this case you can choose to move both Tiers Tier B and C at the same time or individually. In either case the approach is the same.
- 10/8/09 - List of 2010 Books Now Reaches 20 - What Chance Have New 2007 Books? (Copy of post to Mindsharp Blog) (Mike Walsh's WSS and more)
Although we still have no public beta for any 2010 SharePoint product, this hasn't put the main book publishers off from announcing 2010 books. My list of 2010 SharePoint books which is at present located here:
- 10/3/09 - SharePoint 2010 for End Users (Veronique's SharePoint)
Everyone has heard about the new version, but as an average end user you probably would not have seen it yet or know much about it. It may also be a couple of years before your company decides to upgrade to the new version. So why should you care and what does this mean for you, especially when you are battling to get the current version under the belt? I’m probably the last person to write anything on the new version, but here’s my 5c worth.

10/1/09 - Getting Ready for Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 + MSDN Redesign + New MSDN Open XML Developer Portal (Erika Ehrli) This are exciting times for Office and SharePoint developers. While we have released some interesting news about Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 already, there's a lot more coming for the SharePoint Developer Conference and Beta 2. We currently have more than 100 items in the publishing queue to be released between the SP Conference and after Beta 2, plus some great improvements and new pages being built for MSDN Office and MSDN SharePoint Developer Centers. Expect a lot of articles, videos, code samples, and more in the upcoming months.
September, 2009:
- 9/25/09 - Planning for SharePoint 2010 – Upgrade Planning Part 2 Moving the Databases (Chandima.Net Blog for SharePoint solutions)
In this post I will highlight how to move your (32 bit) SQL Server tier to 64 bit. In the case of moving your data tier there are few prerequisites that you should consider. In this case we have the assumption that your new 64bit SQL server deployment has followed best practice guidelines for SQL server. From a SharePoint point of view you should consider the following to enable effective management of your existing content databases or any new databases you are creating. SQL Server 2008 or 2005 (64bit) are both supported when moving to SP2010. Details about preparing your database server can be found here (TechNet).
- 9/23/09 - Microsoft Project Desktop 2010 and Microsoft Project Server 2010 – What’s New! (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
The Microsoft Project teams have been busy developing new and very exciting versions of their flagship products, Project Desktop 2010 and Project Server 2010. Some of the pre-announced key investment areas include: (i) Enhance user experience and appeal; (ii) Improve execution with effective collaboration; (iii) Unify project and portfolio management; (iv) Simplify deployment and extend interoperability.
- 9/17/09 - Planning for SharePoint 2010 - Upgrade Planning and Guidance OFC306 TechED NZ Session Notes (Chandima.Net Blog for SharePoint solutions)
Here is a detailed outline of what I discussed and presented at my TechEd session on Wednesday 16th September in Auckland – New Zealand titled Planning for SharePoint 2010 - Upgrade Planning and Guidance OFC306. Thanks to all of you who came along to the session. This is a first in a series of posts and White Papers that I will publish as part of an ongoing series on planning to upgrade to SharePoint Server 2010. Needless to say that I will only cover planning aspects and will NOT be talking about any new features or functionality of SharePoint 2010. Please visit the SharePoint team blog for details of SharePoint 2010.
- 9/10/09 - Planning Your SharePoint 2010 Upgrade – Part 2: Education (Mauro Cardarelli)
In the early days of SharePoint 2007, I spoke of my excitement about the concept that SharePoint enables all users to be “consumers” AND “producers” of corporate knowledge. That excitement still holds true today. As I now look to SharePoint 2010, my focus has shifted toward a new role offered by this next release, “influencer”.
August, 2009:
- 8/27/09 - SharePoint 2010 Partner Training for SharePoint 2007 Partners! (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
SharePoint 2007 Partners: You’ve heard the buzz about SharePoint 2010 and seen the sneak peeks. Now learn how you can get ready to start building with and deploying SharePoint 2010! SharePoint 2010 Ignite is a 5 day instructor-led training program for SharePoint 2007 partner developers and implementers coming soon to a city or virtually to a PC near you!
- 8/19/09 - SharePoint 2010 Sneak Peek Presentation (Arpan Shah's Blog)
While Tom, Richard and Paul did the Overview, IT Pro & Developer SharePoint 2010 sneak peek videos respectively on the web, I did the SharePoint 2010 Sneak Peek session at WPC last month. The video was recently posted that you can check out here.
- 8/14/09 - Planning Your SharePoint 2010 Upgrade – Part 1: Inventory (Mauro Cardarelli)
I took a few days off earlier this week to spend some quality time with the family on the beach. Nothing like a game of catch by the ocean to highlight the really important things/people in my life. Fortunately/Unfortunately, I had internet access the whole time so I could stay connected to all things SharePoint 2010. Oh the insanity! We’re in this “quiet” period, pre October conference, so there is a fair amount of speculation and exaggeration out there (especially in Twitter land). White noise! I’m not advising you to ignore it; just remember where we are (on the calendar) and there is actually a plan in place for getting solid information to the SharePoint community in sufficient time to support rapid adoption of SharePoint 2010.
- 8/13/09 - Session Sneak Peek for the SharePoint Conference 2009 (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Have you watched the SharePoint 2010 Sneak Peek videos and are hungry for more?! The SharePoint Conference 2009 will be the first time Microsoft will publically share all of what SharePoint 2010 has to offer. We know you want to know what you can expect to see and hear about during the conference – so here’s your SharePoint Conference 2009 session sneak peek!
- 8/11/09 - SharePoint 2010: Do You Upgrade? (zevenseas)
Microsoft is not completely there yet with the release of SharePoint 2010 but it is coming. More and more blogs are posting on new features (although we are limited in what we post) and this brings up the question which companies are going to upgrade immediately. My personal opinion is that it will take a while. There are several reasons for that:
- 8/11/09 - SharePoint 2010 and the Ribbon Bar (zevenseas)
I have a hate-love relationship with the ribbon bar. I think it is the greatest improvement that Microsoft added to Office 2007 but I also get lost many times. I have a better suggestion, add a tag cloud to it with the most used options.
- 8/5/09 - The Office 2010 Synchronization Center (End User SharePoint)
As I play around with the Office 2010 client applications, naturally I’m finding some things are the same, while others are different. Today I’m going to talk about how Office 2010 saves files to a SharePoint site. Reminder: Because SharePoint 2010 is still "under wraps", I’m only talking about using Office 2010 to access a SharePoint 2007 (or WSS 3.0) site in this article. Interaction with SharePoint 2010 may be very different. Also, because this is still pre-release software, things are subject to change between now and future releases.
July, 2009:
- 7/31/09 - SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010 – Sneak Peek… (UK SharePoint Team)
Recently, the SharePoint Product Team released information regarding the next version of SharePoint; SharePoint 2010. News regarding the next version of Microsoft Office; Office 2010 is also surfacing. As I regularly get questions from customers regarding both products I thought I’d pull together a list of useful resources and information.
- 7/20/09 - What’s Up? NDA or NOT? Office 2010 Technical Preview vs. SharePoint 2010 Technical Beta (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 are Soooo hot! It’s really exciting for bloggers and those on the cutting edge to dig in and share what they learn. So much so that there’s been some concern and confusion around the topic.
- 7/20/09 - Making a Case for Thought Leadership in SharePoint 2010 (Mauro Cardarelli)
Thought leader is a buzzword or article of jargon used to describe a futurist or person who is recognized among peers and mentors for innovative ideas and demonstrates the confidence to promote or share those ideas as actionable distilled insights – Wikipedia. OK, ok, I mentioned the “g” word (governance) in my last post and I’ll probably do it 100 or so more times in the coming year. Today, however, I want to throw out a term that I think will be almost as important with SharePoint 2010… thought leadership.
- 7/17/09 - The Hidden Cost of Microsoft's 'Free' Online Office Suite (E-Piphanies)
Despite what you’ve heard, the online version of Office 2010 announced by Microsoft earlier this week won’t be free to corporate users, and isn’t a threat to the likes of Google, Adobe, or even Zoho, which sells online productivity software to small and medium-sized businesses.
- 7/16/09 - Announcing SharePoint 2010 Technical Preview (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Today, we're announcing that SharePoint 2010 has reached the technical preview engineering milestone. The SharePoint team is running a limited, invitation only Technical Preview program. While we're not sharing SharePoint 2010 details at this point, we did want to give our customers & partners a sneak peek at SharePoint 2010! We're very excited about SharePoint 2010 and looking forward to the SharePoint Conference this October where we'll talk about all the investment areas across workloads and the platform. What we're sharing today is just a fraction of what will be in SharePoint 2010!
- 7/14/09 - What's New in Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 (Technical Preview post)
I was out of town and had to miss the excitement of blogging about the launch of the Office Technical Preview yesterday. Lucky me, today I have tons of links and trackbacks to other blog posts to share!
- 7/13/09 - Developer Changes in SharePoint 2010 (Made 4 the .Net)
Paul Andrew talks about the new Developer functionality in SharePoint 2010 in a webcast on the new SharePoint 2010 site. The is also a download of 2010 (Technical Preview) Developer Documentation too. The webcast goes through and shows the new SharePoint integration with Visual Studio 2010 which I'm hoping will be available in the next public beta as it got missed out of the first. Paul also seems to concentrate along time on the BDC stuff which I believe is because it's not heavily been used as it's always been too hard.
- 7/13/09 - First Take: Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview (CNET Download Blog)
The Microsoft Office 2010 technical preview is available today through invite only and--though it's not in its final form--there are plenty of feature enhancements to be excited about, if Microsoft can pull it off. According to Microsoft, the focus of this update was on three things: to make work flows more efficient; to effectively use Web applications to make your work available anywhere; and to make collaboration with others much easier. In this CNET First Take, we'll take a look at some of the notable feature changes across many of the applications. Microsoft says Office 2010 will let you use your PC, phone, and the Web to make your projects come together more efficiently. From what we've seen, they might be right and the Web applications might also give Google Docs a run for their money.

June, 2009:
- 6/25/09 - MSDN Office Developer Center - Pre Office/SharePoint 2010 Update (Erika Ehrli)
MSDN Developer Centers pull together content and resources around specific products and technologies. They connect developers with code samples, community sites, technical articles and documentation, upcoming events, and much more. The MSDN Office Developer Center (ODC) provides a developer roadmap to understand and work with Office System programs, servers, services, tools and technologies. As we prepare for our next product release (Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010), we worked on a set of site updates to improve navigation, increase discoverability of content, and add more community content and features.
- 6/25/09 - Service Pack 2 Update (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
The public update for the Service Pack 2 expiration date issue is now available for download. The update can be applied before or after Service Pack 2 installation. If the update is applied prior to installing Service Pack 2 it will prevent the expiration date from being improperly activated during installation of Service Pack 2, if it is applied after Service Pack 2 it will remove the expiration date incorrectly set during installation of Service Pack 2.
- 6/24/09 - Preparing for Upgrade to 2010 Today - Part 1 Preupgradecheck ( SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
I've been pretty upgrade focused lately. I was presenting to the Puget Sound User Group this last week and polled the audience and asked how many had installed SP2. A lot of hands went up. I asked how many had run the preupgradecheck and all hands went down. I've been thinking what could people do today with the knowledge of what the upgrade check provides.
May, 2009:
- 5/19/09 - Leaked Build and Staying Safe (The Microsoft Office 2010 IT Blog)
I wanted to post quickly to acknowledge the information that you have seen today around bits of Office 2010 being leaked. While all of us here are happy to see the incredible excitement and engagement (and are absolutely chomping at the bit to reach the July milestone) we aren't quite ready to release the technical preview bits. I would encourage all of you to wait until the official bits are available to ensure the best possible experience and not miss out on anything we may include.
April, 2009:
- 4/28/09 - SharePoint 2010: What We Know and What We Want (Ferrara Data Consulting)
Since the announcing of SharePoint 2010 this month, the community has been buzzing with what we know about '10 and what we are still speculating about '10. There isn't a whole lot of concrete information out there yet, but I've compiled a list below of what I've seen so far. I've also started listing some of the pressing things that we, the SharePoint community, would like to see in '10.
February, 2009:
- 2/11/09 - FAST-forward Your SharePoint Search (Real SharePoint)
Microsoft just announced (yesterday) that they are finally solidifying plans of integrating FAST (Fast Search and Transfer) enterprise search technology into SharePoint. You might recall that Microsoft had spent $1.2 billion on acquiring this Norwegian company just a little over a year ago. It's great to finally hear from Microsoft how they plan on leveraging this asset to improve the overall search platform within SharePoint. Yes, this is not gonna be fully integrated into SharePoint until the official release of the next version of SharePoint, but it's definitely something, along with all the additional Office 14 enhancements, that we are all looking forward to.
January, 2009:
- 1/7/09 - Will Office 14 be Ready for Release in 2009? (Ars Technica)
In late July it was suggested that Office 14, the codename for the successor to Office 2007, would be released in either late 2009 or early 2010. This led to speculation that the next version of Office would be simultaneously released with Windows 7, much like Office 2007 and Vista were. Blogger Stephen Chapman recently posted a screenshot he obtained in July 2008, suggesting that Office 2009 would indeed be released this year:

About John Anderson
John Anderson joined Bamboo Solutions as Manager of Content & Syndication in May 2008 after a 12-year career at AOL. New to SharePoint at the time of his hiring, John was tasked with creating a new blog for the just-launched Bamboo Nation community in which he would document his daily SharePoint learning process. Thus was born the end user-centric SharePoint Blank, for which John authored 200 posts within a year, and which he continues to write today. Today, John writes SharePoint Blank in addition to his responsibilities as Managing Editor at Bamboo and, while he learned much about SharePoint in his first two years, he gleefully celebrates the release of SharePoint 2010 and the reset button that the new platform represents for SharePoint Blank.
