I'd like to take a minute to bring to your attention a particularly time-sensitive item. Today at noon (EST), SharePoint MVP Bob Mixon will be hosting a FREE webinar called Findability: Tools and Technology Alone is not the Answer. Today’s webinar is the first in a six-part series focusing on various SharePoint challenges. I have seen a little of what will be discussed, and think that all attendees will find the series to be very informative. Register fast as space is filling up quickly.
Top News Stories Microsoft External Research Release Five New Tools to Students (ZDNet) 5 new tools have been created by Microsoft External Research, revealed at the Faculty Summit. Although some of these won’t be released as yet, they will be available soon - at the very latest autumn/fall later this year. These tools aimed at those in higher education and are designed to assist in research, authoring, or publishing; aimed at students and staff to create better work using existing Microsoft products, like Windows and Office 2007.
Desperately Seeking Enterprise Search (InfoWorld) There's a new search player in town that's taking on the king of the mountain that is Google as well as the other big search engines, Yahoo and MSN. It's called Cuil, pronounced "cool," and it's a Gaelic word for knowledge. Cuil's strategy appears to be offering an even sparser entry point than Google delivers. (The black background takes me by surprise every single time ... and I'm not comfortable with it.)
Software FX readies SharePoint, WPF Products (SD Times) Component maker Software FX will release a bevy of new products before the end of the year, targeting Java, SharePoint and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).
Microsoft Exchange Online Beta Performs Well (eWeek) Microsoft's hosted Exchange offering is easy to configure, maintain and use, but it's tied too tightly into Windows. In one of the most substantial incarnations of its software-plus-services model to date, Microsoft is preparing to throw its hat into an already-crowded ring of hosted Exchange providers.

Using SharePoint to Avoid a Costly Corporate Re-Organization (Mark Schneider) A large corporation stood on the verge of a costly and politically dangerous re-organization. With a dozen independent HR departments representing as many subsidiaries, there was no good way to streamline HR information across the entire enterprise. It seemed necessary to merge all the HR departments into one HR "shared service," but this would be an organizational nightmare.
Our new site goes live - focusing on Agile SharePoint Development (21apps) We have been working hard over the past few weeks to bring our site up to date. It started life as a simple Blogger site and has seen a few minor tweaks and changes over the past 18 months but we had found our needs have moved beyond what a pure blog can offer.
So *That's* What a List View Web Part Is (Mike Walsh's WSS and more) There was recently a forum message giving the address of a Microsoft article on connecting web parts which I checked out before marking that reply as an Answer. While I was checking it (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/HA100241051033.aspx) out, I noticed a link to an article on List View web part.
SharePointPlan.com (Bill English Blog) I want to encourage everyone to add Mark Schneider's blog to your list of blogs to read. Mark has some pretty good ideas about governance and taxonomies for SharePoint. Please find his blog at www.sharepointplan.com.

Top News Stories Demystifying Cloud Computing (Web Wereld) noun 1. a visible mass of condensed water vapor floating in the atmosphere, typically high above the ground. verb 2. figurative [trans.] make (a matter or mental process) unclear or uncertain; confuse." This is how the New Oxford American Dictionary defines the term cloud'. The first meaning of the term cloud is pretty straightforward. However, when you add 'computing' to it, you get an approximation of the second definition: something unclear and nebulous.
Collaboration Takes Center Stage as Market Embraces SharePoint (IT Business Net) There is movement afoot -- a groundswell of office workers are now sharing, collaborating and streamlining everyday business interactions. Their platform of choice is Microsoft SharePoint, which today has logged in over 17,000 user companies and exceeded $1 billion in sales. Put another way, more than 100 million users are tapping the benefits of a collaborative work environment.
SharePoint Licensing Confusion Abounds (intelligent enterprise) Over the last few weeks, I've had the opportunity to speak to various customers about SharePoint licensing. The common theme is that most don't understand Microsoft licensing in general and SharePoint licensing specifically. In fact, most customers are pretty confused by the dizzying array of options, choices, and requirements Microsoft has constructed.
Microsoft Zooms Into Data Quality (Ovum) Microsoft has expanded the data management capabilities of its SQL Server platform by acquiring Israeli data quality start-up Zoomix for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition is intended to strengthen Microsoft's SQL Server platform, with Zoomix's software being included in future releases of its database system.
Traditional CRM vendor fights back by integrating SharePoint, Outlook (NetworkWorld) Microsoft may be engaged in a price war with Salesforce.com, but traditional server-based CRM vendors have hardly rolled over and cried uncle. Today, CDC Software announced that it is taking on the cloud vendors by one-upping Microsoft and tightly integrating with Microsoft's back office apps including SharePoint.
Bamboo Solution's Bundles Extend SharePoint Functionality (Information Week) Bamboo Solutions is probably a familiar name to the IT staffs at enterprises running SharePoint. Around the Blogosphere Free SharePoint Webinar - Findability and Your Intranet (Mastering SharePoint) Starting this Thursday morning from 9am to 10am (PST), I will be delivering the first in a series of free webinars on the topic of SharePoint Findability. Along with each of these free webinars, I will be writing an article that will be downloadable, in PDF format, right here on my blog; see the post I made this last weekend here.
A Better Way to Search (SharePoint Blogs) Anyone who has implemented Search knows all about the fun of setting up your Document Library content types as searchable meta-data. That step alone can be mind numbing, and once you have it done it always seems like one or two columns never show up for the mapping to be made until a few days later. No matter how many times you run full and incremental scans. It's like it has a mind of it own.
Wow, SharePoint as True App Platform with K2 and BlueThread (Michael Gannotti on SharePoint +) I only have a few minutes then I have to get moving and head back to the Microsoft Offices here in Tampa for day 2 of meetings (we have a 7:15 start time). However I did want to quickly point out something that I saw/listened to yesterday that has me incredibly jazzed. SharePoint being, now try and say this 5 times fast ;-) , the most prolific portal product on the planet, has a very large partner ecosystem.
Moving Documents in SharePoint, and Metadata Corruption (Real SharePoint) I speak to a lot of SharePoint administrators who get very frustrated at SharePoint’s handling of metadata when they use the “Send To” option on documents or when they use “Open with Windows Explorer” from the Actions menu. To help sort out what these two native content management tools do to metadata, I decided to spend some quality time with my test server and map it all out. Here’s the result, my guide to SharePoint’s built-in content management tools.

Around the Blogosphere What is SharePoint? (meetdux.com) Were you at the mall last weekend? Did anybody stopped you and asked: "Hey, can you tell me what SharePoint is?" I'm sure you've asked that before and you get a different answer everytime you ask:
Thinking SharePoint Part 4 - Lessons from Kung Fu Panda (Clever Workarounds) Greetings, my cleverworkarounds kung-fu students. Paul here again to talk once more about Zen and the art of SharePoint. Increasing Your Odds Of Getting Your Question Answered (Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog) SharePoint Designer has quite a few online resources that provide you with ways of getting answers to questions, solutions to problems and to share community expertise. While there exist multiple resources which deliver on this (community forums, newsgroups, chat service, ReachOut and KB articles), blogging is a great and easy way of accessing information. For this post I’d like to focus on helping you increase your odds of getting your question answered via a blog.
Behold! Silverlight Streaming! (John F. Holliday) Ok, I’m being melodramatic. But if you do any kind of rich media publishing on the web and you thought the Flash FLV format was your only option – think again. Microsoft has upped the ante quite a bit with their new free Silverlight Streaming service which is now part of Windows Live.
Finding The Needle In Your SharePoint Haystack With A Well Designed Taxonomy (Real SharePoint) One of the main reasons why people use SharePoint is to find information - information stored in document libraries, lists, or other sources linked from SharePoint. In fact, because the majority of an organization's information is unstructured data, SharePoint provides a great way to allow employees, partners, and customers to access all the disparate assets across an enterprise.

MS Products Just Too Cool to Comprehend, Say MS Geeks (The Register) When the product sucks but you can't bring yourself to admit the horrible truth, what's the next logical step? Blame the message, the messenger or the recipient of the message. Simple. Microsoft's normally bombastic marketing has begun blaming Windows Vista's poor uptake on the modesty of its own message, while exaggerating the vocal impact of tiny Apple, rather than admit there wasn't anything positive it could say about the operating system.
Charts: How Microsoft Spends Its Money Online (SeattlePI) Microsoft's online spending plans will be a central topic today at the company's annual meeting with financial analysts, as detailed in this post yesterday. But how has the company's Online Services Business been spending its money so far? With the meeting about to begin, here are a few charts I've put together, breaking down expenses and results in the division, derived from Microsoft's earnings reports.

Around the Blogosphere The Ongoing Saga of WinMac – Back to Vista (BinaryWave) For about a month now I've been running Windows Server 2008 on a Macbook Pro. My initial theory was that Win2k8 + Hyper-V + Macbook Pro would beat the pants off of any Vista system in terms of virtual machine performance. My experience running this configuration validates that theory – Win2k8 on this machine is F-A-S-T. And running Hyper-V was fantastic; I could finally work with my virtual machines as if I was on a native desktop. But, alas, there were a few major issues that forced me to give up on this experience and retreat back to the uncomfortable confines of Windows Vista.
SharePoint at the Olympics Case Study, Mobile Posting, and Facebook (Michael Gannotti on SharePoint +) Wow, I thought this was really cool. So I am sitting on my balcony watching the waves roll in here at Myrtle beach this morning and cruising the web from my Windows Mobile phone when I popped open my view of Mobile Facebook. In it I saw Lawrence Liu had updated his status (he uses Twitter to update his Facebook status) and mentioned the Olympics and SharePoint. Specifically he said "Wow!!! Beijing Olympic Games Committee chose SharePoint for implementing near real-time info portal of 300K dynamic pages!"
Thinking SharePoint Part 3 - A Tale of Two clients (Clever Workarounds) If you have followed the first two articles in this series, I have been attempting to talk about SharePoint "head-space". In other words, SharePoint success is so much more a people issue than a technical or architectural one. As a result, it can be a little difficult to write about!
I See London, I See France… (Properly Securing Your Public Sites Part 1) (eLumenotion Blog) Do you have a public facing SharePoint site that allows anonymous access? If you do, are you sure your anonymous users can't step behind the curtains and browse your lists and libraries? Just for fun, open your favorite search engine and search for "Items in this list contain HTML or text content which can be inserted into web pages".

Good morning and Happy Thursday. Getting away from news and blogging for a second, I'd like to mention something I noticed here in the Bamboo offices. Being in community, I see a lot of the email that comes to Bamboo and there seem to be a large number from project managers. Almost all have questions on how we can help make their jobs more manageable. Well, we listened and put together SharePoint for Project Managers to help answer these questions. What started as a small informational site talking about the project management process that we use quickly took on a life of its own. After a bit of soul searching we decided it could be even better with the input of an expert in the field. With some rather extensive research, we decided to work in partnership with Dux Raymond Sy who not only writes but teaches SharePoint for Project Management. He offers his own suggestions that are not only informational but practical. Hopefully this site will help you leverage all of SharePoint’s capabilities to increase the productivity of your team. Take a look, let us know what you think and don't be afraid to ask those tough questions.
SharePoint in the News Microsoft Seeks To Assuage Software, Online Concerns (CNN Money) The challenge for Microsoft Corp.'s future will be to let go of its past. For years, the Redmond, Wash., software giant's Windows operating system and Office suite of applications have dominated the computer software market. Some 90% of the world's personal computers run on a version of Windows. Computer makers bundle Windows, as well as Office applications, with new machines, driving revenue.
A Room With Many Views: PLM Summit Hosted Virtual Collaboration Space (Manufacturing Business Technology) Michael Grieves is widely recognized as a product life-cycle management (PLM) guru. He has held senior executive positions at several Fortune 1000 companies, and is a cofounder of institutes devoted to advancing the practice of PLM at two separate universities. So when Grieves outlined his vision for “virtual collaboration rooms”–i.e., cyberspace locations for specialists from across an enterprise to gather and share product development ideas—a lot of people in the industry paid attention.
Microsoft Business Chief See Bigger Role For Cloud Computing (CNN Money) Microsoft Corp. expects a "substantial portion" of revenue from its core business services division to come from online applications in the next few years, the new head of that division, Stephen Elop, said Wednesday.
Microsoft To Sell Hosted Versions Of Exchange And SharePoint (ECM Connection) The fact that Microsoft is to sell hosted versions of its Exchange and SharePoint solutions has been common knowledge for some time. Although originally suggesting it would only sell hosted services to larger customers, the company announced earlier this year that it would actually sell to businesses of any size. Microsoft's July 8, 2008 WPC conference announcement that they would initiate such services was not then entirely a surprise. That services would be available at a cost of only $3 a month per user has though sent ripples through the web hosting community.
EMC Pursues SharePoint And Web 2.0 (InformationWeek) The newest Documentum platform emphasizes collaboration, and also offers new tools to help manage information compliance. Yesterday EMC launched its Documentum ECM 6.5 platform. Two parts of the announcement jumped out at me.
Around the Blogoshpere Will Silverlight take off in the Enterprise? (SharePoint Nick) We’ve been working on some stuff at Lightning Tools to create solutions using Silverlight 2.0 beta 2. To us the idea of Silverlight is great, rich internet applications, with zero javascript. Awesome! But we’re left with a few things we’re wondering over before we start pushing things out to get feedback. The two things that are pretty much ready for beta are the SharePoint Silverlight Forums which I’ve mentioned before and a Silverlight ToDo style list application also for SharePoint.
Silverlight at Gamefest (Method ~ of ~ failed) This week I had the privilege of attending and helping with some Silverlight in casual games presentations at the XNA Gamefest conference happening in Seattle. I say helping because the real game experts were there.
Must Read SharePoint and More Blog Posting with Windows Mobile (Michael Gannotti on SharePoint +) Halfway through my year end vacation here at the beach with the family and I am sitting on the balcony watching the waves roll in and doing a little check up on email and web surfing on my Windows Mobile phone as I chug down some coffee. I am heading for a long beach walk in a few minutes with my son but I did want to pas along two quick items I saw during my morning we surfing here on my phone.
SharePoint, Kung-Fu, and the Web Content Management Pinky Finger of Death! (Real SharePoint) Paul Culmsee over at EndUserSharePoint.com has a fun new post about some of the common pitfalls of SharePoint deployment. He lays out the path to SharePoint ninjahood, visiting panda bears, ancient scrolls, and – yes – Master Yoda on the way. It’s the latest installment in his series on the thought processes that must go into successful business-purposed SharePoint projects, and a great read for anyone trying to get a SharePoint project off the ground.
AAM issue with Infrastructure Update (dwinter's [MSFT] WebLog) Known issues discovered after release of this update: Installing the Infrastructure Update in a SharePoint farm that uses Alternate Access Mapping with a reverse proxy or a network load balancer, such as in an extranet deployment, may cause some public URLs to become unresponsive.

SharePoint in the News Beware of 'Chaos' SharePoint Can Create (PC World) A report from Forrester is warning customers to consider carefully how they plan to use Microsoft's Office SharePoint Server product, which they say can wreak havoc in an IT organization when used as a custom application development platform.
SharePoint Challenges IT as the Excel, Access of the Day (Computerworld) Just as the use Microsoft Excel and Access grew at unfettered rates in the 1990s -- often under IT's radar -- the vendor's Office SharePoint Server is spreading quickly through large companies as a development platform for users, according to a new study from Forrester Research Inc.
Don't Shun Social Networking: Microsoft (eChannelLine) While discussing the implementation and gradual rollout of Canadian Tire Corp.'s latest communications portal based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Microsoft Corp.'s general manager of SharePoint platform and tools, Derek Burney, said organizations must cease shunning social networking tools such as wikis.
Microsoft Fights Back, but Does it Have Enough Ammo? (CNET) For quite a while now, we've heard Microsoft claim that when it unleashes its barrage of advertising, Apple and the rest of the software industry will be put on notice. "You thought the sleeping giant was still sleeping?" Microsoft's VP of Windows Vista consumer marketing said recently. "Well, we've woken up, and it's time to take our message forward."
Watch Out For SharePoint Gaps (ChannelWeb) Office SharePoint Server has grown from a collaboration tool into a custom application development platform. But businesses that use SharePoint's higher end features may run into unforeseen difficulties, according to a recent report by Forrester Research.
Do You SharePoint? (NetworkWorld) Do you develop Microsoft SharePoint apps? Do you host them online via the Internet, either as extensions to business intranets or as S+S/SaaS applications? Microsoft claims there are over 100 million SharePoint users (end users I assume). With the announcement of Microsoft Online's hosted and deskless SharePoint services at last week's WPC 2008 conference, even more businesses will have access to SharePoint for their application needs.
Around the Blogosphere SharePoint and World Economics (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land) The economy is definitely on the mind of people in the U.S. Maybe yours too? I've spent time abroad lately and around the world gas prices and currency is a common topic. What about SharePoint? How does it relate to economics...
SharePoint Web Services (Mirjam's blog) Building custom applications for the SharePoint 2007 platform can be done using the WSS and MOSS object model. However, if you can't or won't deploy your code to the WSS server you can also use the WSS Web Services. I must admit that I hardly ever use them, and that I always thought they were not very well documented, but I found some great information here.
Public-Facing SharePoint? Here's something scary... Please activate ViewFormPagesLockDown!!! (Rich Finn) Recently, I've seen a bunch of announcements about new public-facing Internet sites being released out into the wild running on SharePoint. This is awesome because it's great to see people catching on to the web content management features in the product. I do need get something off my chest, though... If you've got a public facing SharePoint site that allows anonymous access, ACTIVATE THE ViewFormPagesLockDown FEATURE!!!!!!!
Using Generics and Anonymous Methods to Your Advantage - A Recursive Alternative (SharePoint Thoughts) Awhile ago, I was conversing with someone about the features of the newer .Net Framework versions. One of the features mentioned was generics. My friend mentioned that he really liked the concept and recently started using them, but that he still couldn't quite see how generic collections could really be put to work. Ok... so that's the lead in for today's post - generics, collections, and 1 more "new" feature called anonymous methods.

SharePoint in the News New Studies Highlight the Potential Downsides of SharePoint (ZDNet) SharePoint is one of Microsoft’s crown jewels. Microsoft is touting the fact that SharePoint generated $1 billion in revenues for Microsoft last year. At Microsoft’s recent Worldwide Partner Conference, company officials said they expect partners to generate $5 billion in SharePoint-related services revenues for themselves in the coming year.
S+S: The Kobayashi Maru of Microsoft (NetworkWorld) July's WPC 2008 conference was all about putting some meat on the bones of Microsoft's Software + Services strategy. Partner pricing for deskless and hosted Exchange and SharePoint was the buzz of the conference, causing many to speculate about who owns the customer and would other Microsoft software products soon follow suit to the S+S strategy (and pricing) of Exchange and SharePoint. Frankly, there's a lot of confusion out there about just what is Microsoft's Software + Services.
Novell Turns ICE into Kablink (InternetNews) Some names just aren't "cool" enough for open source. Case in point: Novell's ICEcore collaboration project, which is now known as Kablink. The newly-renamed project is being expanded with workflow capabilities that Novell hopes will expand business usage.
A New Hint About What’s Coming (and When) in Microsoft Office 14 (ZDNet) Master data management will be part of Office 14, a first Community Technology Preview (CTP) of which is due in the first quarter of 2008. That’s according to a September 19 blog post by Microsoft IT Pro Evangelist “PatricG.”
The SharePoint Phenomena: Microsoft Executes The Classic Platform Play (ECM Connection) For the past several years, conditions have been ripe for a Microsoft platform initiative to consolidate and dominate disparate content management markets. The amount of unmanaged content inside organizations of all sizes has continued to explode, with much of it generated by Microsoft applications. Web technologies provide opportunity for organizations to create cost cutting, service enhancing portal systems. A typical portal is content driven, combining transactional documents, user generated content, line of business data, and more.
