Microsoft Spills the Beans on Hosted Exchange / SharePoint (Network World)
I’ve had a lot of questions about Microsoft’s hosted Exchange and SharePoint offerings since Microsoft’s announcements at the July 08 Worldwide Partner Conference. Most of the details divulged there were just about the partner pricing, but I want to know; who owns the customer, how will support work, can anyone call Microsoft or must the partner, what if the customer switches partners, are there any SLAs, what are the differences between the deskless and full product offering?

All Roads Lead to SharePoint (Sys-Con Brasil)
Corporate IT organizations have deployed numerous platforms over the years to enable users to collaborate on and share unstructured documents, files, and other data. File shares, document management systems, e-mail servers, Web servers - chances are that most of these are still in use in your company. New user requirements and technical capabilities have driven this evolution, and the result is a scattered variety of platforms that have become unwieldy and expensive to manage.

Apart from email, no other technology in an enterprise is touching as many end users as Microsoft's SharePoint. And as interest in this technology grows, there comes a need for customer education, says author, consultant and training specialist Bill English, who has offered SharePoint expertise since 2000 through Mindsharp, a Minneapolis-based educational firm he co-owns.

Dear Potential Speaker,

I am asking if you would consider being one of our session speakers at our SharePoint conference being held in October in conjunction with SQL Saturday #8 in Orlando.  Below I've included some basic information about the event.  However, I would like to first give you a little additional background about the event.

SQL Saturday was 'born' last year in Orlando by Andy Warren using the Code Camp model for one-day mini events for local groups of developers, users, and administrators.  At the first SQL Saturday, we had over 200 attendees.  Since then, there have been 7 additionally scheduled SQL Saturday events including SQL Saturday #4 which was also held in Orlando on the weekend between the two weeks of Tech Ed.

I have known Andy for several years and recently we discussed the possibility of holding a SharePoint one-day event just like SQL Saturday and Code Camp.  While the interest in SharePoint is obviously growing in the user community, the community, at least in Central Florida is not well organized yet.  By holding a SharePoint event, we hope to bring more of the community members together, to learn what each other is doing and what additional resources, including vendors, trainers, and consultants are available.  To that end, we are looking for people and companies who would be willing to attend the event as speakers and/or vendors.

For several reasons, Andy and I decided to co-locate this first event, thus the reference to SQL Saturday #8.  However, we will run at least two separate tracks for SharePoint.  Depending on the response from potential speakers, we could add a third track.  Initially our thoughts were to run a track user track which would include topics such as:

     - Administration Basics for the New Site Owner

     - Building Forms with InfoPath

     - Publishing InfoPath Forms to SharePoint

     - Using Excel Services to Display Spreadsheets

     - Working with Word and SharePoint

     - Integrating Outlook and SharePoint Calendars and Lists

     - Creating Web Pages and Using Web Parts

     - Creating Work Flows (using SharePoint Designer)

In the second track, we plan to have topics more oriented toward Developers and Administrators such as:

     - Backup Strategies

     - Building Web Parts

     - Working with Features

     - Deployment Strategies for  Internet, Intranet, Extranets

     - Optimizing the Search Engine

     - Branding

     - Creating Workflows (with Visual Studio)

Of course, these are just samples and you are certainly welcome to come up with your own topics.  We would like to consider a third track that focuses on third party (non-Microsoft) add-ins and tools that work the SharePoint either to help administer the site or help developers build sites.  Of course, it will depend on whether we can get enough potential topics lined up for this.

Please consider submitting an abstract or two (or three or...) for SharePoint (and even SQL since we will be co-located).  We are using the SQL Saturday #8 site to submit abstracts which you can get to by going to www.sqlsaturday.com and following the links for SQL Saturday #8.

While I have not yet talked about sponsor opportunities in this email, we will be sending out information about that shortly.  If you or your company is interested in sponsor opportunities, please let me know.

Additional background on the event:

Good evening,

The Orlando SharePoint group is proud to announce a one-day free conference in the Central Florida area: SharePoint Scene #1.  SharePoint Scene is partnering with SQL Saturday at SQL Saturday #8 by offering two SharePoint tracks along side the SQL tracks in a single free one day event. SharePoint Scene will focus the topics for the first track on SharePoint end-users and the topics for the second track will be aimed at administrators/developers.

We have been able to confirm Seminole Community College, SCC, as our venue for both SQL Saturday and SharePoint Scene.  This year we’ll be located on the main campus of SCC and our target date is October 25, 2008.  At this time we are looking for people who might be willing to speak at either event or perhaps both events.  We’re asking speakers to submit at least two sessions.  For those interested in SharePoint, would prefer sessions on WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007.  For those interested in the SQL sessions, we would prefer sessions on SQL 2008 but will also consider SQL 2005 topics.  We’ll try to get as many distinct speakers on the schedule as we can.

Help us spread the word by forwarding this email to potential SharePoint and SQL speakers/attendees about this event. Andy Warren will be handling scheduling for the SQL side of the event and Mike Antonovich will be handling the scheduling for the SharePoint side of the event.

If you or someone you know is interested in speaking at this event, please submit your sessions for either event at http://www.sqlsaturday.com using the link for SQLSaturday #8 Orlando.

You’ll be automatically registered when you submit a session, and registration is open to everyone, though we won’t market it aggressively for attendees until we have the schedule set.

The SharePoint MOSSMOSSIS, www.mossmosis.com/orlando group will also be posting information about the event shortly.  In the meantime, please email me if you have any questions. We’re looking forward to an exciting event that hopefully will help kindle the SharePoint Scene in the Central Florida area.
