SharePoint - Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? No... (CMSWatch)
Talking about SharePoint in Copenhagen today and yesterday reminded me of an interesting point. While I like to talk about the practices and tools of search, web content management, or social software, to my audience, that whole spectrum was simply "SharePoint" (or MOSS).
Microsoft SharePoint Connects with Novell GroupWise (MarketWatch)
Novell customers who plan to deploy Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server or Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 can now take advantage of tight integration and interoperability with their existing Novell GroupWise investment.
Microsoft's On-Premise Systems Are Better than Ever (Windows IT Pro)
I've been writing a lot about Microsoft Online Services (MOS) lately for two reasons: First, I feel that hosted online services are the future of business computing, regardless of the size of your business. Second, Microsoft is finally fully embracing this business model after years of hemming and hawing and delivering just half measures that it left to its partners to deploy and manage. Microsoft's emphatic move to true cloud-based computing is an important milestone.
Flame War: The Great Windows 7 Debate (PC World)
Not a day goes by in which InfoWorld fails to receive a flaming comment or e-mail attacking InfoWorld's Enterprise Desktop blogger Randall C. Kennedy and his recent analysis of the pre-beta version of Windows 7. As time goes on, it gets more personal. Recently, I received this little gem: "Randall C. Kennedy is a jaded, personally hurt, pathological liar who only does a disservice to your Web site."
New Features Push Chrome to 1% Web Usage Share (TG Daily)
Ever since Google launched Chrome in September, the browser has been struggling to reach and maintain a 1% market share. The company tried a short-cut to more downloads by pushing it on the Google homepage and YouTube with little success. But we are seeing some movement now: Version 0.4 introduced a new bookmark manager and Chrome's web usage share jumped to 1% for the first time since the days immediately following the browser’s debut.
IE Market Shares Slip Under 70 Percent; Windows Drops Below 90 Percent (Fierce CIO)
Internet Explorer's market shares dipped below 70 percent for the first time in the wake of the launch of Google's Chrome web browser, and slightly better showings for Apple's Safari and Mozilla's Firefox web browsers. Internet Explorer 8, which is still in development, isn't expected to turn the tide. This is due to its higher penetration in corporations, which is always slower to change.
Clues Point to Jan. 13 Release of Windows 7 Beta (Computerworld)
Microsoft Corp. will have a beta of Windows 7 available shortly after the first of the year, the company has hinted on its Web site. Windows 7 Beta 1 will be ready before Jan. 13, 2009, according to the site touting the MSDN Developer Conference (MDC), a series of one-day events for programmers that Microsoft promotes as a scaled-back, on-the-road version of its Professional Developers Conference (PDC), which was held in Los Angeles in late October.

Successful SharePoint Projects, Myth or Reality? (SharePoint Magazine)
How you measure the success of any SharePoint project is open to much debate. Your typical tangible metrics around how a particular project has performed in terms of Time, Money and Quality, are still the main areas are what most organisations focus on upon to gauge their ultimate success. This is irrespective of whether or not the true ‘measures of success’’ from a SharePoint deployment aren’t actually felt by the business until longer after the project team has been moved on to other things.
Creating List Definitions with Content Types (Shared Points for SharePoint...)
When creating a couple of List Definitions which should be tied up to specific content types I came across a few issues on how to do this. My scenario: I needed to create a External References Links list definition (not the same as the wss links list, but similar). I created a content type with the fields URL, Category and Description. Then I created a List Definition which is used to create a list that is bounded to the content type. Also, I needed to hide the Title field which is automatically created from the base content type (Item).
Free Solution: Link Conductor, URL Management Tool (zevenseas)
I’m pleased to introduce the newest tool in the zevenseas toolkit, the Link Conductor. Great name I know, but the question, of course, is “what does it do?” I’m glad you asked, first and foremost, it solves a problem that we had with our web site. We are releasing it, as we suspect that we’re not the only ones. Our site, which is based on SharePoint, is like all sites, scattered with all sorts of links. Our blogs, which are based on SharePoint, are also, scattered with links. Finally, our products, which are slowly scattering over lots of servers, often include links to help people find upgrades or other information.
Defining the Findability Problem (Paul Galvin)
I had the good fortune of attending some partner training from FAST last spring. I was really impressed with the product and was looking forward to working with it. Unfortunately, one project fell through and then EMC acquired my company. Predictably, a certain amount of chaos ensued while we learned about EMC and EMC learned about us. FAST technology dropped a few points on the priority scale during that period. However, I never lost my interest in the product and, more interestingly, the bigger problem of findability.
Protecting SharePoint Data - Storage Experts Chime In (RealSharePoint)
Lauren Whitehouse, analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, and Nilesh Mehta, president of NGenius Solutions coauthor of the book SharePoint 2007: The Definitive Guide from O'Reilly, were recently featured in an article on Enterprise Storage Forum discussing options for protecting your SharePoint data. With SharePoint's growing popularity, there's no denying that the amount of content stored in these databases make storage and recovery of SharePoint content absolutely critical to most organizations. According to Whitehouse, because all content is centralized in a database repository, storage/retrieval as well as backup and recovery becomes rather complex. Essentially, Whitehouse noted, "you've gone from a file server and a couple of PC's to a couple of clustered database systems and multiple file servers, in potentially multiple locations, to store [your] documents."

Pimp my My Site: Adding a My Links Web Part (SharePoint Blank)
While casting about for today's blog topic, I realized that it had been a while since I'd dressed up my My Site with some new bling. This being the case, I decided to treat myself to a new Web Part, and while scrolling through the available options, my eye was drawn to the promise of a simple yet useful add-on for one's My Site: the My Links Web Part.
Relative URLs and List Rollup Web Part, a Perfect Harmony (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Are you a faithful user of Bamboo List Rollup Web Part? Have you had the frustrating realization of creating the resulting List Rollup Data View internally, just to find out that your external users link to items from the List Rollup Data View still used the internal URL? Well fear no more! In the latest release of List Rollup Web Part (File Version 3.3.2.0) we now support a trusty HTML trick of Relative URLs, YEAH!!!!!! So let me first introduce you to the Relative URL in general then I'll explain how it folds into List Rollup Web Part.

Add a Digital Signature to a Browser-enabled Form (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS))
A digital signature is the electronic equivalent of your handwritten signature on a check, credit-card charge slip, or contract, but it’s even better than a written signature. When you add a digital signature to a Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007 form, the signature is invalidated if the information is changed by anyone but you.
