Microsoft Visual Studio to Boost SharePoint (InfoWorld)
Developers building solutions based on Microsoft's SharePoint collaboration and business process platform will gain expanded support in the planned Visual Studio 2010 development environment, which will feature templates and an extensibility API, a Microsoft official said in a blog on Thursday.

Reader Feedback: Playing the Redmond Name Game (Redmond Channel Partner)
We're not totally sure what sparked this e-mail from Tom, but we like it: "One of the problems with Live Search is the name. Multiple words make it harder to tell people the URL since you MUST use both words or else it is meaningless. Plus, if it cannot find what you are looking for, do you call it Dead Search? Google has become both a noun and a verb -- much to the chagrin of Google itself.

Organizational Collaboration? MOSS is Boss (The Chronicle Herald)
LAST MONTH I wrote about all types of server software: Windows Server for sharing files, SQL Server for databases, Exchange Server for email, and Internet Information Server for hosting websites. But I didn’t talk about the fastest-selling server software ever because I was saving it for an article of its own. It is Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, otherwise known as MOSS.

What do Windows 7 Beta Testers Really Want? (ZDNet)
Windows beta testing ain’t what it used to be. Over the past couple of days, this reality seems to be setting in among some Windows 7 testers. Windows 7’s testing and release schedule is like that for Office. (Given that Windows Engineering chief Steven Sinofsky ran the Office development team for years before moving over to Windows, is anyone really surprised?) Sinofsky and his team are holding their cards a lot closer to the vest and are releasing very few public testing milestones. But beyond failing to inform public beta testers of what’s going on, the Windows 7 team also is remiss in providing even the core group of “technical beta testers” with adequate feedback, some of these testers claim.

Microsoft to Fire Windows 7 Blanks (PC Pro)
Microsoft is preparing to send out a series of updates for the Windows 7 beta - with absolutely nothing new in them. The company will be issuing the test updates from next week, to check that the Windows 7 Automatic Update procedure is working correctly.

Popular Websites Incompatible in Internet Explorer 8 (CMSWire)
Friday is a good day to have a laugh at Microsoft's expense - don't you think. Thought so. So they finally decided to get with the compatibility program with Internet Explorer 8. But they may have drug their heels just a little too long and now they are paying the price.

Introducing Microsoft's Gazelle: A Web Browser as a Multi-Principal OS (ReadWriteWeb)
Late last week, Microsoft Research released an interesting paper [PDF] about a Web browser it calls Gazelle that's constructed in such a way to act like an operating system with the browser kernel exclusively protecting resources and sharing across Web sites.

Download the Visio Diagram and Site Template from the Office Online Workflow Videos (Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog)
Hello all, Stephen here again. Awhile back I recorded a series of workflow videos that were posted on Office Online: Watch this: Design a document review workflow solution. Many of you have submitted comments asking if I could make available both the Visio diagram shown in the videos and the solution itself.

Customizing the User Experience of SharePoint: Lists, Custom list forms, and CAML Views (Part 3 of 6) (SharePoint Magazine)
Finally, after a very, very, very, vey, very, very long break, here is part 3 of the “Customizing the User Experience of SharePoint” series. This article also launches the SharePoint User Experience week here on SharePoint Magazine. One full week, focusing only on understanding SharePoint architecture from a user experience point of view. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Video: Setting Up Spam Filtering for SharePoint Blogs (Michael Gannotti)
I often get asked how I deal with blog spam on my SharePoint based blog. Out of the box SharePoint blogs have no spam filtering per say. However, in this video screencast I show the two simple steps that I have taken to ensure that I eliminate spam on my own blog.

SharePoint User Experience Week on SharePoint Magazine (SharePoint Magazine)
Starting from February 23rd 2009, SharePoint Magazine will hold a user experience week, where all the articles released will focus around the user experience of SharePoint.

Sharepoint Tools Support in Visual Studio (Somasegar's Weblog)
Today, developers can use Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2008 to develop solutions for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS).  In addition to the features in VS 2005 and VS 2008, developers can also use Visual Studio Extensions for WSS and dozens of third party tools

Project Management - Stop Biting Off More than You Can Chew - Please! (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
You know the feeling when you have eaten too much - usually because the fare on offer looks too good to pass up.  You know how a few hours later you feel - blah!  You know how you say to yourself - "why did I need to eat all that food at that siting - it was going nowhere, I could have eaten it later - stupid me!"  (My daughter cooked the most amazing short bread last night - so I feel a bit like this right now, as I start into my Saturday!).

SharePoint Performance Zen (The SharePoint Mad Scientist)
I’m creating a workshop on SharePoint Performance for the upcoming SharePoint Technical Conference (SPTECHCON) and thought since it’s been a while since I blogged I would share my thoughts on the subject. My presentation is entitled SharePoint Performance Zen. Performance Zen is not perfection per se, but an attitude. A state of mind where performance problems do occur, but those problems have rational causes which can be identified and resolved quickly. Performance Zen can be described as:

Microsoft SharePoint Online Service Level Agreement (SLA) (Tobias Zimmergren)
Quickie! For those of you interested in SharePoint Online, you can now find more information on the SLA on the following link which Microsoft Download released yesterday:

Functional Consultants vs *Great* Functional Consultants (Clever Workarounds)
Kristian Kalsing was written a really terrific post, not just because he quoted yet another bloody international standard that I will have to now read (ISO15489). But because, drawing on his experiences of the world of SAP, he has observed that there are some important lessons that can be learned for SharePoint engagements. SAP (okay, well Basis anyway) is a world that I experienced way back in 1999 and, boy, can I write some stories about social complexity and project failure about that era!

Thumbnails with Dropdown Menu Actions in a SharePoint Picture Library (SharePoint Blank)
In my post on Applying a Drop Down Menu Actions Menu in a SharePoint Picture Library, I lamented the (seeming) fact that one couldn't have both a thumbnail of a picture and an associated drop down actions menu in the same view.  Thanks to EricJ, who was good enough to leave the following comment in response to that post, I now know that I can have my proverbial cake and eat it too: Also, you can modify the View to display thumbnails or full size pictures as well, by adding the relevant column.

The updated version of Bamboo's User Management Solution Accelerator is now available for download. It offers all of the great previous features of User Management, like:

A Sweet (“Suite”) Promotion (The Bamboo Team Blog)
What’s the hottest trend in enterprise project management? Microsoft SharePoint. The problem? Although SharePoint is a powerful platform for collaboration, it lacks critical functionality needed to be considered a full-featured Project Management Information System (PMIS).

SharePoint Analyzer v1.3 Preview (The Bamboo Team Blog)
The next release (v1.3) of our free SharePoint Analyzer tool will be coming soon, so we'd like to provide an advance look at the enhancements currently in development:
