No MOSS Required: Free Web CMS Built on SharePoint Services (CMSWire)
Well this is kind of interesting. Do you have SharePoint Services (WSS) up and running, but would really like to have some web publishing capabilities on top of it. Unfortunately you don't have the money to invest in full blown MOSS just to get web content management. CompleteSharePoint.NET offers you a solution — a Web content management system built on top of WSS.

Microsoft Gives Discounts on Software Licenses (CNET)
Microsoft has cut the price of leasing software by as much as 25 percent. Companies can sign up for discounts on SQL Server, SharePoint, and other Microsoft software, or two bundles of client-access licenses, according to notices posted on the Microsoft Incentives Web site.

Microsoft Maintaining Strength In Downturn (InformationWeek)
Numbers may not lie, but survey respondents sometimes do. That came to mind when I read that Linux Gaining Strength In Downturn. IT managers can answer a survey any way they want, but the real test is whether they commit money to Linux, or divert money from Microsoft to Linux.

Operating Systems Don't Matter (Microsoft Watch)
Microsoft won't agree with that assertion, nor will Linux or Mac aficionados. I've blogged this topic a couple times past, either here or when I was a JupiterResearch analyst. I got to thinking more about the OS irrelevance topic because of a Friday blog post by Michael Gartenberg and my weekend experience shopping for a Casio watch.

Microsoft Details New Changes to Windows 7 (PC Magazine)
Just weeks after releasing a lengthy list of 36 improvements it plans to make to the release candidate (RC) of Windows 7, Microsoft on Friday unveiled 28 more changes it plans to make before upgrading the operating system from beta to Release Candidate. The additions are small changes based on user feedback, the majority of which affect Windows Explorer and the desktop experience. It is the second group of revisions Microsoft has disclosed for Windows 7.

Google OS will be on Netbooks by Year's End (ComputerWorld)
It's not news that Microsoft will get Windows 7 out as fast as possible this year. Vista has been a complete dog, so Microsoft will rush to deliver what is essentially a cleaned-up, lightweight version. What is news is that Google will have its own contender, Android, in the desktop operating system market.

Windows 7 Plus Windows Live Equal Love (Softpedia)
Having ripped out traditional components from Windows 7 completely, including the default email, photo viewing, and instant messaging clients, Microsoft is still advertising Windows Live and the next iteration of the Windows client as nothing short of a pair. Back in 2007, applications such as Windows Mail, Windows Messenger and Windows PhotoGallery shipped as an integral part of Windows 7. Fast forward two years later, and Microsoft has renegaded the components from its Windows platform, and made them part of Windows Live Essentials, a collection of applications under the Windows Live brand umbrella, fitting perfectly with its new strategy of software plus services.

Microsoft Videos IE8 to Prove It's Faster (ExtremeTech)
Even though it falls far behind other browsers such as Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox on standard JavaScript benchmarks such as SunSpider, the company has been at pains to convince users that the browser is a speed leader. True, JavaScript performance has greatly improved in IE8 over IE7, but still trails other browsers by about five-fold. But Microsoft's Dean Hachamovitch, who heads up the IE8 team, contends that scripting performance is not the number-one determinant of browsing speed. The company has set up a testing lab with a high-speed camera to compare actual page loading times for the top 25 websites (based on comScore MediaMetrix data), and they've released a video showing the results.

IE8: How Fast Is Fast Enough? (InternetNews)
Microsoft feels that Internet Explorer, especially upcoming version 8, isn't getting the respect it deserves when it comes to talking about speed. So IE officials have done what any good Web-savvy netizen might do -- they've made an online video demonstrating that IE8 is as fast as competitors.

The ‘Hidden Cost’ of SharePoint in the Enterprise (Harbar.net)
If you have been in any of my SharePoint admin classes or worked with me on deployments you will be familiar with one of my favorite topics, the ‘hidden cost’ of SharePoint. I’m not talking about scary topics like ‘governance’, ‘best practices’, culture change, end user training, or Enterprise CALs, but rather all the other things you absolutely must have when operating SharePoint in the enterprise. It’s long overdue that I post a summary here for all those who want the key takeaway information.

PerformancePoint Services for SharePoint (Ferrara Data Consulting)
In January Microsoft announced that PerformancePoint Server 2007 would be bundled in SharePoint 14, the much-anticipated next release of SharePoint. They have plans of releasing SP3 for PerformancePoint in mid-2009, but this will be the last major software update for PerformancePoint as a standalone product.

SharePoint Designer, Free as in Beer (Fear and Loathing)
I caught a couple of blog posts from here and here that had to make me do a double take. I’m not one for relaying gossip, but this information seems to be legit. As of April 1, 2009 SharePoint Designer will be free. Now if you go to the “official” site there’s no mention of it however I’m hearing through the grapevine it’s true. The official site even has a “buy it today” option, so you might want to hold off on that.

SharePoint Error Messages (Sharing The Point (SharePoint))
Not a new concept here, but I thought I would add this to my blog so I’m not always referencing other blogs for it. Plus I will be referring to this post very soon. When you get an error in SharePoint, by default it’s not going to be very descriptive.  Actually, all it’s going to say is Error.

Using Site Lookup Columns, Across Sites (blah!bLaH!BLOG!!)
Over the last week, I was talking with my friend and fellow MVP, Sezai Komur, who pointed me to a valuable piece of code written by yet another of my friend, and fellow MVP, Tony Bierman. The problem we are trying to solve is the ability to lookup columns across sites, within the same site collection. Tony has created an elegant way of doing that via a custom field type. I wanted to demonstrate an alternative out of the mechanism. The main difference between Tony's approach versus this approach is that Tony's approach will let you go either way .. i.e. .. a child site's list can be referenced in a parent site, whereas the illustrated approach below lets you go only downwards .. i.e. from root to child and grandchild .. or from child to grandchild. .. but the below is out of the box.

Future Creep – You Aren’t Gonna Need It! (Andrew Woodward)
How many times have you added an additional parameter or bit of logic to your code because you thought it could be useful and it’s easier to add whilst your already changing the code?   If you are your introducing Future Creep!  and should stop doing it.

SharePoint Survey Customization: Removing User Names from Completed Surveys (SharePoint Blank)
I recently received a question regarding customization options in response to an earlier post on creating SharePoint surveys.  Specifically, I was asked about customizing the survey so that the user's name wouldn't appear on the completed surveys page: I would like to be able to remove the create by: and modifed by: and the bottom of a completed survey. I have turned off My Sites but for some reason when an end user completes the survey and opens it up to modify it at the bottom "create by:" their name is a hyperlink to their mysite and I don't want them going there.

Microsoft Updates
The search service is unavailable in SharePoint Server 2007, and you receive a "Search service is currently offline" error message (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
In some cases, the search service may be unavailable in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, and you may receive the following error message: Search service is currently offline.

When you include more than one search scope in a search on a SharePoint Server 2007 site, noise words are not filtered (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When you include more than one search scope in a search on a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, noise words are not filtered. For example, if you search for "the", the search operation returns all content instead of returning the following message: Your query included only common words and / or characters, which were removed. No results are available. Try to add query terms.

If users update content on the site while you are backing up a SharePoint site collection, the backup file may become corrupted (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
If users update content on the site while you are backing up a SharePoint site collection, the backup file may become corrupted. Then, when you try to restore the site to another location, the restore operation fails.
