More Windows 7 RC1 Changes Coming, RC Release Dates Leaked (Daily Tech)
Windows 7 RC1, according to descriptions by Microsoft, is shaping up to be very impressive. Microsoft has fixed close to 2,000 bugs based on user feedback in preparation for what may be the best Windows release to date. In our first special, we took a peek at the Windows 7 RC1 interface changes. In the second, we took a look at hardware changes and more. Now we revisit RC1 one more time to look at a few more changes Microsoft has announced, and we also follow with the release dates for the RC versions.
Microsoft Announces Free Accelerators and Online Service Updates (Destination CRM)
In his keynote speech at Microsoft Convergence here last week, Kirill Tatarinov consoled the company's enterprise resource planning and CRM customers with motivating words: Thanks to technology, he said -- and, specifically, thanks to the technology made available in Microsoft Dynamics -- "you're much better-positioned to endure and prevail during trying economic times." With that, he reiterated Microsoft's commitment to its customers and dedication to ensuring that they have an understanding of the tools available to them -- and unveiled two major product announcements: the March 2009 Service Update for CRM Online along with eight CRM Accelerators.
Windows 7 Release Candidate Available Online (PC Advisor)
A new Windows 7 build that may be the first release candidate has leaked to the internet, according to several file-sharing sites. Searches on Mininova.org, for example, found multiple copies of Windows 7 Build 7057 that were added to BitTorrent late last week. Pirated versions of both 32- and 64-bit editions are available.
Microsoft to Highlight Silverlight 3 Technology (InfoWorld)
Microsoft will tout at the Mix09 conference in Las Vegas this week its planned Silverlight 3 rich Internet application technology along with a host of other developer-related offerings, according to the conference Web site. Other efforts to be pondered at the conference include the planned Visual Studio 2010 IDE, the Azure Services Platform for cloud computing and Expression Web, for building Web sites.
Microsoft Mix '09: Fewer Sheep to be Thrown, More Business Apps Shown (ZDNet)
If you’re tired of Web 2.0 conferences where “Throw a Sheep” apps reign supreme, Microsoft’s Mix ‘09 might be a breath of fresh air. At previous Mix events — Microsoft’s showcase for designer/developer tools — Microsoft has played up the same kind of consumer-focused social-networking scenarios as its Web rivals. But this year’s Mix looks a bit more business-focused (at least based on the Mix ‘09 session list).
Microsoft Hopes To Win Back Browser Market Share With Internet Explorer 8 (Physorg)
Microsoft has a lot at stake with the success of Internet Explore 8 since they lost 7 percent of their browser market to Firefox, Safari, and Chrome browsers. IE8 has been in release candidate since January of 2009 and will mostly likely be a target for criticism for similar features already existing in Firefox, Safari, and Chrome browsers.
The Future Beneath Your Fingertips (BBC News)
The success of the iPhone has given rise to a new grammar of touch control while the advent of multi-touch in Windows 7 will further accelerate the evolution of human computer interfaces, the South by SouthWest festival has been told.

The One Best Practice to Rule Them All – Part 5 (Clever Workarounds)
If you have read through the first 4 posts, you should have a pretty good appreciation now for the sort of “lens” that I view the world of problems and the projects undertaken to try and solve those problems. You should also have a pretty solid appreciation of the concept of wicked problems, their characteristics, and the ways and means that those characteristics can turn a happy project into a toxic wasteland, destroying all of the initial enthusiasm and commitment among the participants. Microsoft’s Jason Guthridge recently nailed SharePoint’s place in it all when he wrote the immutable law of SharePoint that “By itself, SharePoint can neither create nor destroy organizational chaos, but does an excellent job of reflecting the level of organizational chaos that existed at the time of deployment” – hehe love that!
Create a SharePoint Site Plan in Less than 5 Minutes (End User SharePoint)
At SharePoint Saturday in Boston this weekend, there was a lot of interest when I demo’ed a new idea in the presenter room. Just about everyone who saw it wanted the templates I created for generating a quick site plan in Mind Manager.
Forms Based Authentication (FBA) for SharePoint (Sharing The Point (SharePoint))
I typically always hit a snag when implementing FBA for a SharePoint site. *shrugs* I just accept it… it will not always go smoothly for me. However, there are several resources that I typically lean on as a reference if I get stuck or something isn’t working the way it’s ‘suppose’ to. Although most people can find these resources doing a little of searching on the internet, I thought I would post up my 2 go-to articles for my 7 readers (yes… that’s you).
Audio: Mikeys Tech Talk – Access, Excel, And SharePoint (Michael Gannotti)
In today’s audio podcast postings I have two new pieces. They can be found at Mikeys Tech Talk. Episode 26: Access Databases and SharePoint and Episode 27: Excel 2003/2007 and SharePoint.
Social Networking Not a Replacement for In Person Networking (Brendon Schwartz)
As much as I love the social tools that have been built over the last few years they do not replace the need to actually do in person networking. I have found that some of my friends over the last 9 months have had to look for jobs. Many of these people I never thought would be in that position, but it turns out they were.

SharePoint Workspaces Applied at the List Item Level (SharePoint Blank)
In response to an earlier post of mine on how to Create a SharePoint Meeting Workspace, I received a question asking whether it was possible to automatically associate workspace functionality at the item-level in a list. Specifically, the question I received from RobertPaw asked was: Is there a way to add the "Workspace" checkbox item ("Use a Meeting Workspace to organize attendees, agendas, documents, minutes, and other details for this event.") to a list? I'd like to be able to have my user create an item, and have this calendar functionality of creating an associated workspace?

The Check Names function does not honor the Peoplepicker-onlysearchwithinsitecollection setting in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
You use the following command to set the Peoplepicker-onlysearchwithinsitecollection setting in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. "stsadm -o setproperty –url http://webapp –pn peoplepicker-onlysearchwithinsitecollection –pv yes" However, the Check Names function does not honor the Peoplepicker-onlysearchwithinsitecollection setting. For example, if you enter a user name in the People Picker text box and then click Check Names, the entered user name will be looked up in Active Directory by the ActiveDirectorySid resolver.
