Microsoft's Elop: It's 'Time to Double Down' on R&D (The Street)
After spending most of his professional career at companies that competed with Microsoft, Stephen Elop joined, as he jokingly calls it, the "Evil Empire from the Northwest." That was a little over a year ago. As president of Microsoft's Business Division, Elop oversees the largest revenue-generating division of the company.

Is IE8 Actually Safer? (PC World)
Internet Explorer 8 hits the wires today with a bevy of new security features, including more protection against hacked sites, ActiveX lockdowns, and a private browsing mode. And if you're wondering whether you should get it, then here's your short answer: Yes.

First Look: IE 8 Final Fixes Some Problems, Leaves A Big One (Channel Web)
Microsoft and other vendors fixed a series of pesky problems with its Internet Explorer 8 browser before the software's official launch on Thursday, notably a number of rendering issues that appeared in prerelease versions of IE 8, according to a first look at the browser across Windows XP and Windows Vista platforms.

IE 8's More Secure, Interestingly Innovative: Video (CNET)
Internet Explorer 8 takes some long-needed strides to bring it up to speed with its competitors. It's more secure, with tab sandboxing and more aggressive malicious site warnings, and introduces some slick new features like Accelerators and Web slices. Even with better support for Web standards, it's far from perfect. Check out what's hot and what's not in this First Look video.

IE 8:Expected Windows Update and Automatic Updates Schedule (Neowin)
Now that IE 8 is available for download via Microsoft Download website, users should expect IE 8 being delivered via Windows Update soon. TechARP is reporting that Microsoft will release IE8 via Windows Update a week later and schedule automatic updates at the end of April, 2009. Refer the IE 8 release notes for more info on the known issues, compatibility issues and other issues.

How Google Is Showing Off Chrome (Business Week)
The Google home page has been ransacked. The familiar, colorful logo is upside down. The search box and the "I'm Feeling Lucky" tab have been uprooted and now point up at a rakish angle, jutting into white space. Other links have tumbled from the top navigation bar and lie in a heap on the side of the browser. What on earth is going on? Have the hackers taken over?

Why Energy-Efficient USB 2.0 Won't Be in Windows 7 (PC Magazine)
In August, Intel announced an addendum to the USB 2.0 specification, intended to define several energy efficiency extensions. At November's WinHEC event, Microsoft officially noted that the extensions won't be supported by Windows 7. What gives? The proposal would extend the USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface spec. (EHCI is the technical term for the USB 2.0 controller on your PC, not to be confused with a Universal Host Controller Interface or UHCI, the USB 1.1 controller).

Microsoft Proud of Its First 'post-Gates' OS, Ballmer Says (PC World)
Windows 7 is the first Microsoft OS developed away from the watchful eye of Bill Gates, and the technical leaders who built it had to adjust to life at the company without its cofounder and former chief software architect, CEO Steve Ballmer said Thursday. "We have a lot of people who are stepping up and growing in new ways," Ballmer said, speaking at the McGraw-Hill 2009 Media Summit in New York. "There's no question about that. I'm growing in some new ways. Some of the senior technical guys are growing in new ways."

Create Datasheet View Missing (Shared Points for SharePoint...)
The other the I got asked why the “Datasheet view” option was lacking from “Create a new view”. It turned out to be a more troublesome way to find the solution than first expected. First I checked the users rights on the site collection, but that really did not give any answers.

IE 8.0 Quick Observation for SharePoint (Reza Alirezaei's Blog)
In case you didn’t hear it in mix09 keynote, IE 8.0 was RTMed today (Download). According to the benchmarks ,IE 8.0 is without any doubt, the best IE ever and we all know that there is no better browser to view SharePoint sites in than IE! First off, a big “Thank You” to the IE team for their fabulous efforts to improve IE 8.0 with regards to standards based compliance. That’s the first obvious thing that comes to my mind. Work with it a little bit and you know what I am talking about!

Grab 10 Free Slick Themes For SharePoint… For Free Big Smile (Michael Gannotti)

Search Settings Generating Multiple Errors! (From The Field)
I was helping a customer recently investigate an issue that was causing the Search Settings page (searchsspsettings.aspx) within the SSP Administration site to generate an error. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

SharePoint stsadm Command History (Sharing The Point (SharePoint))
I can’t believe I didn’t know about this little shortcut already *hangs head in shame*.  I thought I would post this just in case I’m not the only GUI dork who isn’t a command line master-jedi. When working with the command prompt (in our case stsadm), you probably already know that you can navigate to previous commands utilizing the up/down arrow keys.  However, you can also hit F7 to see a list of the commands, to easily use a previous one.

The One Best Practice to Rule Them All – Part 6 (Clever Workarounds)
In my last post, we had developed an IBIS based issue map that I think is a reasonable reflection of a blog article written by Joel Oleson, incorporating some feedback by readers who disagreed with many of his points. What is great about Joel’s style of writing is that he likes to use headline grabbing titles for his articles. As a result of this, he stimulates rigorous debate and I could probably spent the rest of my days on cleverworkarounds simply IBIS mapping his posts and all of the responses.

Embed Video and Audio files in the SharePoint Environment: Part 3 - Single Embedded Player with Multiple Dropdown Menus (End User SharePoint)
In part two I demonstrated a single dropdown menu that controls an audio or video player in SharePoint.  What if a user wants to separate files into topics?  This is not easy to do with a single dropdown.  You can give each topic its own dropdown menu and player but then you are back to multiple players in a window. Again I got a simple question: If a player with a dropdown is possible then why not multiple dropdowns and one player?  I love that kind of logic.

Silverlight 3 Beta Released (Mart Muller's Weblog)
A lot of cool things announced at the MIX09 about Silverlight 3. Tim Heuer has a great post with an overview of new features. Check it out here. You can also find a lot of info on the Silverlight.net site.

Do My Bamboo Products Work with IE8? (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Another day, another new browser to support   Microsoft will officially release Internet Explorer 8 today at noon.  We have been actively testing our products and Web sites against the beta versions of IE8.  So far things look pretty good, but it's fair to say that there will likely be a few more issues once we get a look at the final build.  We are aware of a significant problem with the Bamboo installer and IE8.  Once we get that final build, we'll be testing and issuing patches and updates as necessary. Stay tuned to the Bamboo Team Blog for updates on our progress.

You cannot limit the People Picker on the site-collection level to find only users in a specific organization unit (OU) in a trusted domain in a SharePoint site (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
You want to limit the People Picker control on the site-collection level to find users in a specific organization unit (OU) in a trusted domain. However, you cannot use the stsadm -o setsiteuseraccountdirectorypath command to work with OUs from a trusted domain. You can use the stsadm -o setsiteuseraccountdirectorypath command only when the OU is from the same domain where the Microsoft Office SharePoint Sever (MOSS) 2007 farm is installed.

If you search the text in the AboutMe managed property in a SharePoint Server 2007 site, no results are returned (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
If you search the text in the AboutMe managed property in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, no results are returned. For example, you enter the following search: AboutMe:veterinary. This search does not display results for users whose AboutMe description is "veterinary" or "I worked as a veterinary until last year."

When you perform a crawl in a SharePoint Server 2007 site, the crawl runs indefinitely (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When you perform a crawl in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, the crawl runs indefinitely.
