SharePoint Designer 2007 is Now Free! (Microsoft)
SHAREPOINT DESIGNER 2007 IS NOW FREE! Be sure to watch the video in the "Related Resources" below to learn more about details and future direction. Office SharePoint Designer 2007 provides the powerful tools you need to deliver compelling and attractive SharePoint sites and quickly build workflow-enabled applications and reporting tools on the SharePoint platform, all in an IT-managed environment.

Share Pointers: What Is a Shared Service Provider? (SD Times)
In MOSS 2007, there is a concept of Shared Services Providers (SSP). The idea is that there are certain services that really make sense to centrally manage and share. A good example is profiles. With an SSP, we can import all of the profile information from ActiveDirectory once, and then our various Web applications can consume the data. So maybe we have two Web applications: http://marketing and http://accounting. It doesn't make sense for each one to maintain identical profile information, they should share.

Microsoft Targets Linux, IBM with Windows Server for Really Small Biz (Computer World)
Microsoft Corp. today announced the 10th member of its Windows Server 2008 family with a new version of the server operating system aimed at companies with fewer than 15 employees. Windows Server 2008 Foundation is intended for small firms without dedicated IT staff but that want to store files, share printers, host software and serve as Internet gateways.

Microsoft: Social Network Concepts Work Great in Business (CNET)
During an on-stage chat Wednesday at Web 2.0 Expo, Steven Elop, Microsoft's president of the business division, defended himself against conference instigator Tim O'Reilly's challenge that Microsoft's traditional office apps aren't making, and may not be able to make, a successful transition to the Web.

Simon Hurst's Top Efficiency Tips for Microsoft Office (Accounting Web)
Despite launching two years ago, many businesses across the UK have yet to make the jump to Microsoft Office 2007. The need to upgrade to the latest Microsoft word processor or spreadsheet applications is seen by many companies as minimal. After all, the 2000 and 2003 editions of Microsoft Office still perform adequately, while the next version, Office 14, is expected in 2010.

Will Azure Evolve Into Microsoft's Fifth Major Platform? (Redmond Mag)
Microsoft is a company founded on the back of platforms. It has turned Windows client, Windows Server, Windows Mobile and Xbox into development hubs around which third-party hardware and software companies have coalesced. Microsoft is targeting the cloud as its fifth platform. From the outset, it made the developer environment one of the four "pillars" of its Azure OS. The Azure dev environment, like Windows and gaming, will have all the usual elements -- a programming model, service architectures, language environments, an SDK -- plus a couple of pieces unique to the cloud, including a desktop simulation environment and a Web service gate to the cloud.

Download Free Windows 7 Demo Toolkit (Softpedia)
While laboring to produce the first Release Candidate of the next iteration of Windows, Microsoft is making available for download the Windows Demo Toolkit, an offering with Windows 7 as its nucleolus. Both the 32-bit and the 64-bit variants of the Foundation Suite (what the software giant referred to as the heart of the Windows Demo Toolkit) are up for grabs via Microsoft Connect, the Redmond company revealed. Via the two downloads packaged as ISO images, customers will be able to access preconfigured installations of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000. Microsoft informed that once Windows 7 Release Candidate would be made available, the Windows Demo Toolkit would be upgraded with the RC bits.

HP Looking at Google's Android Platform (eWeek)
Is HP considering a swap of Microsoft's Windows platform for Google Android on its netbooks? A company spokeswoman says HP is studying the possibility. It wouldn't be the first time HP dipped its toes into the Linux software pool.

IE8 for Ordinary Mortals (Brisbane Times)
Microsoft unveiled Internet Explorer 8 at its Mix conference in Las Vegas last week and became a victim of bad timing, when its "secure" new browser was hacked during the Pwn2Own competition at the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver. But my experience with IE8 suggests it will survive this initial stumble. IE8 is much snappier and far more secure than IE6 and IE7, has many usability improvements, and some innovative features that are not available elsewhere.

How We Did It: LearningPoint for SharePoint (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Today's guest blog post is from Martin Harwar who is the chief solution architect for Point8020 Limited.  A few weeks ago, I was able to sync up with Martin while he was on campus and he was kind enough to assemble this post that dives into how his solution is leveraging Silverlight-on-SharePoint to build rich Internet applications.  At the end of the post, he links you off to a longer white paper, demos of his learning management system and trial.  So on to Martin's post.

Looking to Get Into Silverlight and Doing SharePoint Work? Get this FANTASTIC Book! (Andrew Connell)
I know many folks who are SharePoint developers who are still getting into Silverlight development. I fall into that camp. There’s plenty of information out there on how to do SharePoint development and how to build Silverlight controls. A smart cookie and figure out how to do data binding and pulling data from the SharePoint Web Services.

Microsoft SharePoint Designer Now FREE (Meet Dux)
This is not an April Fool's Day joke, it is true. Microsoft SharePoint Designer is now free. It is a very powerful tool that allows non-programmers to:

Where's my SharePoint Web Part Page? It was Right Here a Minute Ago! (SharePoint Blank)
One of the upsides of being a member of a team in which I'm not the only relative SharePoint newbie is that, from time to time, I get asked SharePoint questions.  Oftentimes, they're questions to which I don't know the answers myself, and those questions tend to translate directly into a blog-worthy learning opportunity for me. The latest such opportunity presented itself to me yesterday afternoon and, though I only had a couple of minutes to spare at the time (which proved insufficient to answer the question), the colleague in need was able to get the answer from another team member.  With some embarrassment for not having figured it out on his own, he told me later that he'd gotten the answer and that it ended up being pretty straightforward.  I said, "wait, don't tell me, I want to figure it out on my own!"
