Next Big Land Rush: Believe it or not, is Knowledge Management (ZDNet)
This sounds silly for anyone who has ever been involved in the typical hapless library exercise of a digital “knowledge management” initiative.  The lasting image for most of these efforts is of a black hole - everything goes in, nothing comes out.  But get ready for a change of tune.

Microsoft Office 2010 to be Free Online (Tech Radar)
We knew Microsoft was almost ready to lift the lid on the next version of its Office suite of software, but we hadn't expected the surprises that appear in the offing. According to reports in the US and Japan, the next iteration will not be called Office 14, as had been expected, but will instead go by the name Office 2010.

Microsoft on Windows 7: They did it Right this Time (IT World)
Although Windows 7 isn't released yet, I expect it to be a much larger success than Windows Vista.  I even expect it to be as solid and popular as the venerable Windows XP.  When it comes to their handling of the development process for Windows 7, it's blatantly apparent that Microsoft learned a host of lessons from their time developing Windows Vista. This time around, they did it right.

Microsoft Windows 7: Upgrade or Just Buy a Pizza? (CNET)
Business Week is running a piece on Microsoft's latest attempts to fight back against Apple and Linux and its secret strategy to force unwitting Windows users to upgrade to various flavors of Windows 7. Because of the smaller size of Windows 7, three versions of the program will come loaded even on lower-end machines. If a consumer on a cheaper PC running the "Standard" version tries to use a high-definition monitor or run more than three software programs at once, he'll discover that neither is possible. Then he'll be prompted to upgrade to the pricier "Home Premium" or "Ultimate" version.

Cloud Providers Vow Interoperability (SD Times)
Leading SaaS platform providers, and some expected entrants to the market, assert that their respective offerings are or will be  interoperable with other clouds. While there is a general consensus behind using existing Web standards to accomplish this, some acknowledged the need for new standards to evolve over time.

With Their Heads in the Cloud, the Old Dogs of Technology are Bent on Learning Some New Tricks (Times Online)
Half a dozen big names have long dominated the American technology sphere, but the rise of web-based companies threatens to recast the pecking order and is forcing the old guard to rethink their business models. The widespread use of web-based applications such as Yahoo!’s e-mail and Google’s search engine has forced the likes of IBM, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard to wonder how they can profit from the new era of computing through remote data centres.

SaaS and Cloud Computing: The Channel Is Far From Dead (E-commerce Times)
The role of the channel will certainly change in the face of the rapidly evolving on-demand services market. However, there's still room for channel outfits to operate. User organizations of all sizes still need help with myriad decisions, such as evaluating and selecting the rapidly expanding array of SaaS providers and cloud computing vendors, writes E-Commerce Times columnist Jeffrey M. Kaplan.

Microsoft to Start Pushing IE 8 to Existing IE Users (ZDNet)
Microsoft already has pushed via Auto Update the final version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) to customers who had installed the beta version of its latest browser. Starting next week, the company plans to begin delivering IE 8 via Automatic Update to users with older versions of IE installed.

Top SharePoint Pitfalls (Essential SharePoint)
This came up the other day: what is the worst idea you've seen done in SharePoint? We developed a list of five, which were too specific to describe here. However, I think they represent five general traps that enterprises can fall into when deploying SharePoint.

No Assembly Required: Color Code Your SharePoint Calendars (End User SharePoint)
Christophe Humbert at Path to SharePoint has provided us with a blueprint on how to color code a SharePoint calendar without having to deploy a feature or hack any web pages. Check out the demo screencast below to see an example in action.

Migrating SharePoint Content Between Different Site Templates and Preserving all the Necessary Metadata (Boris Gomiunik)
I’ve had a case recently where I needed to migrate a document library that has extra columns, and document versioning enabled. The important issue was to preserve also the document properties like Author, Editor, Created and Modified date.

User Experience (Arpan Shah's Blog)
The most important measure of a successful solution is adoption. Whether it’s an Internet application or an Enterprise application, if it’s not being used by anyone, it’s useless. There are a number of factors that contribute to adoption (above and beyond the actual ROI/value of the application): marketing/evangelism, training, migration, policy and user experience. There is no doubt that user experience is super important and often overlooked by solution developers. With hundreds of different options on the Internet, the “build it and they will come” mantra doesn’t hold true. And while corporate policy can make people “have to” use a specific solution, real success is when people “want to” use a solution and/or it comes very naturally to them.

Bamboo SharePoint Video Library Beta 2 is Now Available (The Bamboo Team Blog)
A few weeks ago we provided you with a sneak peek at Beta 2 of the Bamboo SharePoint Video Library. Well, the big day is finally here and Beta 2 is now available for download. So drop what you are doing, download, install, and don't forget to leave your comments and questions in the Bamboo SharePoint Video Library forum.

Interview with Rob Bogue, Author of ‘The SharePoint Shepherd’s Guide for End Users’ (Part 1 of 3) (SharePoint Blank)
In conjunction with the publication of his new book, The SharePoint Shepherd's Guide for End Users, I was recently offered the opportunity to interview Rob Bogue, the SharePoint Shepherd himself.  Needless to say, the chance to pick the brain of a certified SharePoint MVP who wrote a book for end users was an opportunity that I wasn't about to pass up.

ESPBPC: Best Practices Wrap Up (The Bamboo Team Blog)
The booths are all packed up and the show is officially over (well, I guess it wasn't really over until the last beer –Lager?  Bitter?– was drank at SharePint, and then the subsequent Chelsea-Liverpool football match last night - oh, in case you were wondering, Chelsea won 3-1).  Without a doubt, this was a great show for Bamboo to be at - we met a lot of new and familiar faces as we always do, but since we have such a large customer base in the UK, it was really good for us to finally "be" here.  Here are a few things in particular that I thought stood out:

Microsoft Updates
MOSS: The "Modified by" field in workflow always show the Users Account information (DOMAIN\UserAccount), but not the user Preferred Name (User Name Eg. James Smith). (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When you create a Workflow on a Document Library using SharePoint Designer the Workflow would send out an approval status email to the users. When the Workflow is started the system will send an Email out to the approver with the detailed information of this document, such as "Created by", "Modified by". But the system will always show the user account in the format of DOMAIN\ALIAS and not the preferred Name (User Name Eg. James Smith).

Overview of Web Parts Available in SharePoint Server 2007 (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS))
Web Parts are the basic building blocks of pages on SharePoint sites. They enable you to customize a SharePoint page to display content or business data from many sources on the same page. You can also use Web Parts to display information from external sources, such as RSS feeds or news sites.

Understanding Field Controls and Web Parts in SharePoint Server 2007 Publishing Sites (Office Developer Center)
Learn the details of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 field controls and Web Parts and how they differ, and best practices for when to use each type of control. (17 printed pages)
