Sign of the Times: Microsoft Sales Drop? (CNET)
How bad is the tech slump? Even sales at Microsoft appear to be headed downward. If projections hold, Microsoft on Thursday will report a year-over-year drop in quarterly revenue, a first for the software maker. The company has come close to flat-lining before, most notably in mid-2000 as the dot-com boom came to an end. Even then, though, it managed to post a slight increase in revenue.
8 Interesting Tidbits From Microsoft's Q3 Earnings (Channel Web)
Microsoft's sales and profit declined during its fiscal third quarter, but in a sign of the glum expectations that have been draped across the entire IT industry, the software giant's performance wasn't as bad as some Wall Street analysts expected. Here are eight themes from Microsoft's Q3 earnings call that give insight into where the company sees present and future challenges arising.
IT Departments and Hosted Solutions Working Together (Fresh Business Thinking)
The implementation of managed or ‘Hosted’ IT solutions (whereby the management of a company’s IT requirements are outsourced to a third party) can help to minimise and relieve the strain on business and IT managers. With pressure on organisations across the UK to ‘do more with less,’ IT departments are coming under extreme scrutiny as business managers look to Hosted IT solutions such as Microsoft Exchange 2007, SharePoint 2007 and Dynamics CRM 4.0 to get them through the recession.
Windows 7 Official Release Candidate Is Build 7100 (Windows 7 News)
It’s been confirmed that Windows 7 Build 7100 is the official RC release. Complied on 21 April 2009 it is tagged as 7100.0.winmain_win7rc .090421-1700. More recent internal builds have been released, but 7100 is the official RC build. The Windows 7 Release Candidate will be available for download on May 5th, although expect it to be leaked before then particularly as MSDN and Technet subscribers will get it beforehand. Already fake torrents have been seen in the wild.

OPINION: Enterprises can expect security of authentication, data protection, privilege levels and the DNS to improve for users running the next client version of Windows.
Cloud Computing a ’Security Nightmare’ - Cisco CEO (Computing SA)
If anyone has the right to be excited about cloud computing, it is John Chambers. But Cisco Systems’ chairman and CEO has conceded that the computing industry’s move to sell pay-as-you-go computing cycles available as a service on the Internet was also "a security nightmare."
AT&T Notes Huge Surge in Wi-Fi Usage (Network World)

The Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 DoD 5015.2 Add-On Pack has been around for some time now. In this post, I want to share a high level overview of the add-on pack File Plan and then detail how to drill down through the Records Center structure created by the File Plan using the associated development kit.

Part 6 - Lessons Learnt from Leveraging the SharePoint Platform (SharePoint Magazine)
There are quite a lot of people in the SharePoint community flying the SharePoint Development flag high and proudly. The SharePointDevWiki.com is growing steadily each week and I’m extremely pleased that there are more and more community members submitting content on there. There are plenty of people trying to take the SharePoint Development approach and using Solution Packages to deploy to the farm. But more and more I am seeing this scenarios below.
(3) A WAG (Workplace Architecture Guidance) Process Introduced (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
The Workplace Architecture Guidance (WAG) process that we use defines six phases that you can follow to architect a new workplace. Your aim is to identify the key processes in your customer’s business and to identify how these processes interact. It is important to remember that processes, by their very nature, are constantly evolving. The challenge then is to architect a SharePoint solution that is flexible enough to be used and evolved repeatedly in changing environments.
A Hidden Gem - the Preview Pane View in SharePoint (End User SharePoint)
Toward the end of my wiki article last week, I showed a web part added to a SharePoint wiki page. While people liked the idea of adding web parts to a wiki, what got even more reaction was the web part itself.
Around Bamboo Nation
This Week in Bamboo (April 12th - April 18th, 2009) (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Every week we release enhancements and patches. What significant for this week is the roll out of List Search Advanced Web Part (HW11B R1.5). So if you loved this product before because it allows you to do some complex queries against a certain number of lists selected from the dropdown, you will love the feature from the new version even more. Why? In the last version, you can only search against one list at a time. With this new version R1.5 you can search against the data which is generated from the List Rollup Web Part – which is the collection of data from many-many lists.
Adaptable SharePoint Navigation Tools without the Cost of MOSS 2007 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Have you found the need for navigation in your SharePoint environment to automatically update base on user login? Maybe you want users who belong to a specific custom SharePoint Group to see one set of menus while another group may see a totally different set. Did you know that Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 provides this functionality out of the box utilizing a feature called Audiences. But not everyone can afford MOSS 2007 and are quite content with a majority of features available in Windows SharePoint Services v3.0. Well Bamboo Solutions has the solution for you! SharePoint Navigators provides various menu interfaces for users to interact with provided URLs. Below is a visual example of each navigation variation available:
One SharePoint Web Part to Rule Them All (The Bamboo Team Blog)
A few months ago, I attended the SharePoint Power End User course offered by Mindsharp. At one point during the third day, one of the students asked, "How can I combine data from lists on separate sites list into one view?" The answer is, with SharePoint out -of-the-box, you can't. Everyone I talk with, Project Managers, IT pros, Developers, Consultants, and pretty much anyone who has anything to do with SharePoint has the same core request for SharePoint functionality: list aggregation. It's no wonder that Bamboo's List Rollup is our most popular SharePoint Web Part.

Bamboo's global network of partners offer you the support you need to build robust SharePoint solutions. The Partner Advantage Program currently numbers well over a hundred companies and, with the Bamboo Partner Profile series, we're privileged to introduce them to Bamboo Nation in their own words. This week: LookOut Software.

After creating a variation hierarchy the following error is observed. The variation system failed to pair pages http://Server/en-US/web/Pages/default.aspx (http://Server/en-US/web/Pages/default.aspx) and /ja-JP/web/Pages/default.aspx because their Content Types do not match.
Error message with Outlook and SharePoint integration: "This task could not be updated at this time" (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When SharePoint sends a task email notification, Outlook provides the 'Edit this Task' button on the ribbon. When clicking on this without the component the error message appears: This task could not be updated at this time.
The "Add users to a SharePoint group" SharePoint Group drop-down is disabled (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When you try to add a user to a SharePoint Group, the "Add users to a SharePoint group" drop-down is disabled. If you create a Web application and a site collection through SharePoint object model code and create custom SharePoint groups that are derived from default groups and forget to define oSiteGroup for the oSite.RootWeb.AssociatedMemberGroup then you will experience this problem.
