An Affordable SharePoint Alternative? (CMS Wire)
Looks like Alfresco isn't the only vendor offering a SharePoint alternative. Australian vendor Intranet Dashboard says they have the perfect alternative to SharePoint, offering an all in one solution for creating Intranets, Extranets and portals. First time we've heard of them. So let's take a closer look.

Collaboration Is Cloud's New Killer App (IT Business Edge)
Earlier this year I wrote a story for which I interviewed several companies using Google Apps, grilling them about their likes and dislikes. The ease of collaborating with coworkers and with others was a feature I heard lauded again and again. Judging from comments by Rishi Chandra, a product manager for Google Apps, the company recognizes collaboration as its ace in the hole. He said: We are building the next generation of collaborative applications, and the cloud offers the best way to deliver them. Ten years ago, it was all about really intensive individual collaborative applications. But now it’s about working with others.

Microsoft Unveils Stimulus360 (Softpedia)
Microsoft Stimulus360 is a solution designed to permit public sector organizations to keep a close eye on the US economic stimulus funds. The Redmond company indicated that Stimulus360 would increase the level of transparency and collaboration among governmental entities. An integral part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act from February 17, 2009 involves not only the obligation to wisely allocate $300 billion in funds, but also to manage the resources, track them and provide reports on the evolution of funded projects. This is where Stimulus360 comes in.

Microsoft Layoffs Hit Several Products (CNET)
In the wake of additional layoffs on Tuesday, Microsoft is scaling back--but not totally eliminating--several products. After cutting 1,400 jobs in January, Microsoft said on Tuesday that it is cutting more than 3,000 more jobs. Among those products affected are Microsoft's ResponsePoint phone system, its .Net Micro Framework, and its MSN Direct Service.

First Windows 7 RC Feature Gets Pulled (APC)
The Windows 7 RC includes a newly enhanced version of Internet Explorer 8 which includes what the IE development team describe as "tab hang reporting" — a system for tracking whether individual tabs in IE have stopped responding. As in-browser applications become increasingly important, being able to isolate individual problem tabs is an increasingly important feature (and one promoted particularly heavily in Google's rival Chrome browser).

Microsoft Release 2 Updates for IE8 on Windows 7 RC (Neowin)
Microsoft has released two new updates for Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 RC, via Windows Update. The first update applies only to Windows 7 RC, and will be fixed in the Windows 7 RTM. The first issue resolved is one which, according to the Microsoft Support site, caused the browser to hang, and show this error message: "A webpage is not responding on the following website: (Website name)".

Live From Stanford: Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer (Barron's)
Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer made one of his periodic visits back to Stanford this afternoon, to give a talk as part of the Stanford Entreprenurial Thought Leader Seminar. (It’s actually a for-credit Stanford class, which by the way you can listen to any time on the Web.) Steve, of course, famously attended but did not graduate from the university’s Graduate School of Business. In case he slips up and announces something material, I’ll be here to bring it to you live.

Where to Look for Information About Updates for SharePoint? (Stefan Goßner)
We often receive questions about how to install Service Packs or patches, about which patches are available, what they include and so on. Microsoft has a central page available that covers all kind of Updates topics:

Querying SharePoint List Items Using jQuery (Jan Tielens' Bloggings)
Due to popular demand I’ve created another sample of how you can make use of the jQuery Javascript library in your SharePoint sites. This example uses SharePoint’s Lists.asmx web service to retrieve all the list items of a specific list. In my previous posts I showed how you could use jQuery in SharePoint Site Pages (regular .aspx pages uploaded to a Document Library), so let’s do something different now; let’s use jQuery in a plain Content Editor Web Part.

Enterprise 2.0, Powered by SharePoint (Stefan on SharePoint)
"Web 2.0" is old news now right? How about "Enterprise 2.0"?  What does technology and social interaction inside the enterprise look like when we start to leverage some of the concepts we've developed for public networks?  Perhaps even more important -- What tools do we use to power social interaction within this new paradigm?  Are they the same tools we used on the web, or altogether different?

SharePoint and Silverlight-Accessing SharePoint List Data for Silverlight Without Web Services (Get the Point)
Recently I had a client request an animated carousel or filmstrip like player for displaying both images and embedded .wmv videos on their SharePoint intranet.  The idea is to display many images and videos without taking up a ton of screen space in the process.  Also, they wanted to be able to manage what images and videos get displayed via a standard SharePoint list, i.e. they could add links and descriptions in the SharePoint list and those would display appropriately in the filmstrip.

The MOSS Summary Link Web Part (Q&A Session) (SharePoint Blank)
I've received a couple of questions in the wake of the third (and final) part of my mini-series on the Summary Link Web Part, and I thought they were both important enough that they deserved a full-length blog treatment by way of response.  One question pertains to the ability (or lack thereof) to reference a master list for the links in the Web Part, and the second has to do with the permissions necessary to edit the shared version of the Web Part.

Technical details about the 2007 Microsoft Office Servers Service Pack 2 (SP2) releases (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
This article describes technical information about each of the Service Pack 2 (SP2) updates that have been released for the 2007 Microsoft Office server products. This article discusses the following for each update file in SP2:

Sign In as different user does not clear the session and cookie values (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
If we have any session variables used in any custom Web Parts or any custom pages in SharePoint and these session variables are used to fetch data based on logged on user, then when we click on "sign in as different user" it does not clear out all the previous session values and cookies. This would not fetch us correct data in a custom Web Part. When we use custom authentication with ISAPI filters sitting on MOSS, sign in as different user throws an error 401 Unauthorized.

Event Handlers cannot be triggered by an anonymous user (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When trying to perform an action on a SharePoint list as an Anonymous user you may see the following error message: An unexpected error has occurred. System.OutOfMemoryException: Server Out Of Memory.
