Five Truths You Must Know About SharePoint and Exchange (Search Win IT)
IT managers are often overwhelmed by SharePoint technology and unclear on how they can make the most of all of its features. Take the functionality between SharePoint and Microsoft Exchange. On any given day, IT managers receive hundreds of email messages, and many of them are critical and demand immediate decisions. But because of the volume, it becomes difficult to find, categorize and sort them all. Data becomes lost, and IT managers spend a great deal of time searching for information. In the process, they become less productive in other aspects of their jobs.

Ozzie: E-mail, Collaboration Will Drive Move to Cloud (PC World)
Moving e-mail and collaboration applications to the cloud will drive the first wave of adoption of cloud computing in the enterprise, which is still in its nascent phase, company Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie said Wednesday. Speaking at a JP Morgan event in Boston, Ozzie said that enterprises still don't trust that they will be provided with the high service levels they would need to move applications onto large networks run by a small number of vendors.

Microsoft Receives Patent for Restricting Windows Functionality (Ars Technica)
Microsoft has been granted US Patent No. 7,536,726 (hat tip to Slashdot), which it filed for in 2005. The patent describes a system that can cripple certain features and functionalities of an operating system until a user pays to have them unlocked. Microsoft claims this helps users who purchase computers with operating systems and do not use all the features offered. Here is the abstract of the patent:

SharePoint on SharePoint: Launch of New Website (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Lights… Camera… Action! Today, we launched the SharePoint marketing website on SharePoint Server 2007.  First the home page, it is brand new and we’re using Silverlight enabled web parts to keep the interface simple, elegant and dynamic thus enhancing the overall usability of it.  You can watch customer videos, learn about events, download trial versions of the software and a lot more on the home page now.  Since the site is powered by MOSS, we are taking advantage of the publishing feature and list driven content.  This allows the SharePoint team to more quickly publish news, events, demos, webcasts and a whole lot more.  But wait… There’s more!  We also invested time to make sure the site was optimized for search engines.  We’re really excited about all the possibilities that are in front of us now that SharePoint is running on SharePoint. Smile

Breaking News: Windows Media Center Brings Netflix to Consumers Using Silverlight (Silverlight Team Blog)
It’s official! As of today Silverlight is now supported within Windows Media Center. Microsoft just announced the immediate availability of the Netflix service on Windows Media Center for Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate. Under the hood, this is the same Silverlight-based service that users can get from www.netflix.com. To use it on Windows Media Center, you need to be a subscriber to Netflix and you need to have Silverlight installed on your PC. As shown below, a new Netflix tile now appears under TV + Movies in the Media Center UI.

Common Problem MySite and MyLinks Don’t Show Up (Brendon Schwartz Collaborating on SharePoint)
I have seen this as a common problem that MySite and MyLinks don’t show up on a portal.  Let’s take a quick look at why they may not be showing up.

Windows 7 Compatibility … So Very Happy (Brain Litter)
I'm so happy. I'm running the Windows 7 Release Candidate solely on my production machine and I must say, besides the odd IE8 crash (which happens on any windows machine it seems, though one would have hoped IE would have matured more with IE8) and some strange graphics card 'flashing', my experience has been very positive.

(8) Phase 5: Rollout (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
In traditional, larger systems development where an entire system is rolled out in one chunk, the focus is on the rollout of software and the expectation during the rollout phase is that there will be little or no change to the product being rolled out.  It is generally speaking a "take it as is for now" proposition.

Customize the SharePoint Quick Launch, Part 1: How to Add a Quick Launch Heading (SharePoint Blank)
Wondering how it is that we're suddenly shifting gears from Part 1 of Down the Rabbit Hole with SharePoint People and Groups to Part 1 of an entirely new series on Customizing Quick Launch?  Read on... When we last parted company, I'd established that it was possible to edit which groups would appear in the Quick Launch on the People and Groups page, but I was still wondering how one would go about removing the People and Groups heading on the home page of a site.  Based on the appearance of a test environment of mine, I was pretty sure that the People and Groups heading appeared by default but, after an admittedly small amount of clicking around, I didn't immediately see how one would go about modifying that heading.  Well, when I said we'd pick up where we left off, I took those words to heart, and picked up my own investigations with the same Microsoft Office Online page (View users and SharePoint groups and edit the Quick Launch group list) that I'd referenced in my last entry.  Upon revisting the page, this module suddenly jumped right out at me:

Guest Blog by FiveSix Consulting's Tamara Austerlade - 6 Tips for a Successful SharePoint Demo (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Little did I know when I volunteered to be the site owner for our organization's SharePoint pilot that I would also be assuming the roles of SharePoint trainer, public relations officer, and chief evangelist. Everyone, it seemed, wanted to know what SharePoint was and how my team was using it. But, the conversation never stopped there - they also wanted to see it in action. SharePoint can be hard to understand when you first encounter it, but there is nothing quite like a live, visual demonstration to convey the meaning and possibilities behind what might otherwise simply be bullet points in a list of features.

Files that are larger than 5 megabytes are truncated to 5 megabytes at check-in on a server that is running SharePoint Server 2007 (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Web application contains a site collection below a managed path, but does not contain a site collection at the root of the Web application, various errors will occur. Examples include file truncation when checking in large (>5MB) files from Windows Vista using the "Local Drafts" feature, and an inability to successfully search Microsoft Project Web Access sites below the managed path.

My Sites and My Links are not available or browsable post migration of SPS 2003 Portal to MOSS 2007 by using the Content DB migration method (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
Post running PreScan on a SPS 2003 portal and then used the content DB migration methods to migrate / upgrade the site; The links for "My Sites" and "My Links" are not available. Clicking on the link "My Site", it tries to create a new My Site rather than opening the existing one.
