5 Tips for Maximizing SharePoint (Intranet Journal)
Though tools such as Microsoft's SharePoint can contribute to more streamlined processes in the workplace, what's hard is changing employee actions and perception. Here are five tips to help your workforce adapt and accept portals as collaborative, successful ways of working. Each organization has its own unique culture, which can become a fundamental driving force. In an optimal culture, employees' interests and the interests of the business are closely aligned, leading to a win-win situation. Collaborative portals such as SharePoint shift the way that people work -- for the better, but the culture change that occurs can be exhausting. In order to alleviate some of these challenges, SharePoint360 suggests:
Microsoft Groove Jumps Onto SharePoint Bandwagon (Computerworld)
Microsoft Corp. plans to turn the Groove collaboration software it acquired in 2005 into its main application for workers to access content stored on SharePoint servers, even while offline. In a belated move, Microsoft Corp. plans to turn the Groove collaboration software it acquired in 2005 -- along with its now-chief software architect Ray Ozzie -- into its main application for workers to access content stored on SharePoint servers, even while offline.
New Features in Office 2010 Nothing to Write Home About (Fierce Content Management)
Paul Thurotte reports this week, in the always excellent Windows Supersite blog, on some new features in Office 2010. Looking down the list it's nothing dazzling, beyond its integration in the cloud, which should improve its collaboration capabilities. Of course, since many corporations use Office in conjunction with SharePoint, they get the collaboration features as part of the package.
Why Microsoft Won G2009 (Computerworld)
It's hard to escape the conclusion that Microsoft got just what it wanted out of the government's failed three-year software licence negotiations, G2009. Yesterday, Computerworld broke the news that the discussions had concluded without a deal. Microsoft will now negotiate individually with each agency. It will get to talk a lot more with government CIOs and rebuild the direct relationships that were so strong in the 1990s, but that in the era of all-of-government buying were threatened.
Microsoft Heats Up Security (Forbes)
Microsoft may have been trying to eat Google's lunch when it rolled out its enterprise online subscription services late last year, but now the software giant is taking on the big guns in security. Microsoft ( MSFT - news - people ) is revamping its e-mail security service into a next-generation security service based on the Forefront technology of Stirling. Stirling is Microsoft's integrated security suite, slated for release later this year.
Windows 7: Application Enhancements (CIOL)
Ever since Windows has been around, especially since the time of Windows 95, there have a been a number of applications bundled with the OS that have had their uses. Some of these like Calculator, WordPad and Paint, have always been around, but never really seen too many changes as the years have gone by. Other applications like a Movie Maker and a mail client (Outlook Express/Windows Mail), etc. were introduced later and have had minor changes with each update.

Profiling Applications - Which are Cloud Worthy? (ZDNet)
Although we still don’t have a universally agreed upon cloud computing taxonomy, that is a model that clearly defines all of the components of cloud computing, the technology that supports it and rich implementations of standards-based tools, some, including my old friend Ken Oestreich of eGenera have scouted out the uncharted territory and tried to bring some sense to the nonsense seen in the industry.
Government IT & Cloud Computing: Themes for Discussion (Ulitzer)
A little over a week ago I put out a request to my readers to help me with my meeting with Vivek Kundra. The response has been awesome! Thank you for your suggestions and recommendations, both public and private. Below, in purely random order, are just some of the comments I've received. If you want to add your voice to the choir, I'll be taking comments through Tuesday evening, May 26th. During my meeting, I will definitely highlight this dialog and will also leave a listing of all comments for Mr. Kundra's review.

You Can Pry SharePoint Designer From My Cold, Dead Hands (End User SharePoint)
Nearly everything I write about for EndUserSharePoint.com involves SharePoint Designer. In fact, a substantial amount of this site’s content, maybe even a majority, speaks to end users on how to leverage SharePoint Designer to solve business problems. And now that SharePoint Designer is free, it’s easy for everyone to get their hands on it.
SharePoint 101: What’s a Host Header Site Collection? (Zach Rosenfield)
I often get asked to differentiate the different ways to configure URLs for site collections—most often how Host Header (HH) Site Collections fit into the mix—so I thought I’d try to disambiguate this for everyone. In the simplest explanation, there are three types of Site Collections:
Limitations of STSADM -o export/import Related to Publishing Sites (Stefan Goßner)
STSADM -o export/import is often used to split site collections into multiple pieces when they reached a certain limit. Or to do the vice versa and consolidate multiple site collections into one larger one. Both of these actions work fine as long as the migrated content does not use the publishing feature. For site collections that make use of the publishing feature it is not supported to migrate root sites into sub sites or sub sites into root sites.
Word 2007 – Filling Up Demo Documents (Worker Thread Blog)
Often when I’m demonstrating things like SharePoint document libraries, I find I need to create a new Word document and quickly fill it with some placeholder text, ideally real text rather than the usual “asdadsadasdasda” that you end up typing otherwise.
Data View Web Part, The Basics – Multiple Edit Forms (End User SharePoint)
There are a couple of different things I’m going to show you in this article, and both of the entail editing data in the data view (data form) web part.

Customize the SharePoint Quick Launch, Part 3: Hide or Show the Quick Launch (SharePoint Blank)
In the first part of this series, I wrote that when editing the Quick Launch headings, "The Recycle Bin is the only component of the Quick Launch that doesn't appear to be optional (and will always be present in Quick Launch)." In response to that post, I received an email from a WSS 3.0 user asking if it's possible to remove the Quick Launch entirely (i.e., including the Recycle Bin, and the View All Site Content link which I hadn't been aware would also remain in the former Quick Launch real estate), and wondering if SharePoint Designer would provide the means to do so.
This Week in Bamboo (May 17th - May 23rd, 2009) (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Again many patches and enhancements were released this week at Bamboo. The highlight of the week, which is worth mentioning, is the major enhancement release of SharePoint Project Portfolio Dashboard R1.5. See my announcement blog for more details. SharePoint Project Portfolio Dashboard R1.5 contains two new additional Web Parts, Bamboo KPI Column and Project Portfolio Dashboard Mapping Web Part, which together as a set of tools will help you not only effectively plan, manage and report at the project level but allows you to roll up your reports to a centralized corporate level. This allows your organization to not only consume the data at a corporate level and proceed with best practices, but utilize the resources as a whole and proactively communicate the problems and needs. SharePoint Project Portfolio Dashboard (SA35 R1.5), Calendar Plus Web Part (HW20 R3.0.49), SharePoint Task Master (HW45 R1.1.153), Tree View Web Part (HW03 R1.4.17), Password Expiration Web Part (HW23 R1.2.22), Alerts Administrator (HW39 R1.1.66).

Options for Locking Down SharePoint Designer (Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog)
Hello all, Stephen here again – I’m a writer for SharePoint Designer. As you know, SharePoint Designer 2007 is a powerful tool for editing SharePoint sites — so powerful, in fact, that you likely have scenarios in your organization where you want to control where and how people can use SharePoint Designer 2007. With this post, I’ll try to answer a very common question: “How can I lock down SharePoint Designer in my organization?” And I’ll try to answer the flip side of this question, which arises in an environment where SharePoint Designer has been locked down and the user asks: “Why do I see this message when I attempt to edit a site in SharePoint Designer?”
