Don't do that with SharePoint (Search Win IT)
We've all had flashbacks to our childhood when our mothers told us, "Don't do that, or you'll regret it." But then we went ahead and did it anyway, right? As children, we just didn't have the wisdom or foresight to trust that advice. Now that we're older and wiser, we can take those words to heart. Here are five "don't do that" tips for SharePoint that can save you hours of unnecessary re-work down the road. Not interested in following this advice? That's your decision, but don't say I didn't warn you.
Office Developer Conference Cancelled (Visual Studio Magazine)
Microsoft cancelled its standalone Office Developer Conference for this year and instead will fold the content into its SharePoint Conference 2009 event, which is scheduled for the fall. The reason for the consolidation wasn't exactly clear, but Microsoft described it as an opportunity for developers. "We are optimizing our show presence for developers seeking opportunities to build on the Office platform, which includes Office client applications, SharePoint, Exchange and Communicator," a Microsoft blog explained. The SharePoint Conference 2009 event is scheduled to take place on Oct. 19 to 22 in Las Vegas.

Windows 7 Release Date Announced (BBC News)
Windows 7, the next major release of the world's most popular operating system, will be officially available to the public on 22 October. Microsoft is hoping it can avoid the negative press that surrounded the launch of Vista, the last major Windows release, almost three years ago.
Google's Enterprising Moves (Forbes)
It seems that the good ship Google Enterprise is striking out on a new course to dramatically increase its relevance to IT. However, www.Google.com/Enterprise at first gives an odd impression of what enterprise computing is. Most partner offerings focus on utilities for syncing contacts, moving files and supporting Google Apps as a desktop replacement.
Cheat Sheet: Windows Azure (Silicon.com)
Azure: is that blue or purple? More a bluey-purple I'd say… oh, and a cloud-based computing platform Microsoft announced in October 2008.
So what does that mean then? It's essentially a hosted computing and storage service, run from Microsoft's own datacentres and accessed by customers via the internet.
Apple Has Squandered the Gift That Was Vista (PC World)
While it’s true that Apple has significantly grown its share of the desktop operating system market since the release of Windows Vista in November of 2006, the company's market share remains below 10 percent, and it actually dropped in Q1 2009, according to Gartner’s Worldwide PC Shipment report.
Microsoft Admits Vista is Dead in the Water (Tech Radar)
The first day of Taiwan's Computex hasn't been dominated by any product release – far from it. It's the obvious indictment by the computing industry that it loves Windows 7, hates Vista, and wants Microsoft to put its marketing programs in place today.
Use Internet Explorer 8 to Access Multiple Gmail Accounts (The Washington Post)
Here's a little-known advantage to using Internet Explorer 8: It lets you access multiple Gmail accounts simultaneously and independently. This is accomplished via the New Session option, which makes it possible to log onto Web sites that track your identity across different tabs--like Gmail.
Verizon Unveils Cloud Computing Services For Businesses >VZ (The Wall Street Journal)
Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) unveiled on Wednesday a service that allows large companies to outsource their technology infrastructure to the telecommunications provider. The New York company is tapping into the "cloud computing" trend, where corporate IT services are managed over the Web. Large companies looking to cut costs can hand over their IT equipment, which include storage, server and network gear, for Verizon to manage through its own network and data centers.

Office 2010 for Developers: Conference Moving to SharePoint Conference 2009 (Erika Ehrli)
Last year I had the opportunity to attend the Office Developer Conference 2008 in San Jose, CA. I remember being there with Sanjay, Ken Getz, and Wouter at the Open XML booth where we had the opportunity to talk to some of you about the latest improvements to the Open XML Format SDK 1.0 and distribute Open XML posters. I was super happy to hear from Gray that we will have an Office Developer Conference moving to the SharePoint Developer Conference 2009. Office 2010 enables better integration between Office client applications and SharePoint products and technologies. It makes sense to have a shared conference.
How to Get Column Names to Wrap in #SharePoint New Item Forms (NewForm.aspx) (SharePoint Solutions Team Blog)
I was asked the other day if there might be a slick CSS method for getting long column names to wrap in a SharePoint list’s new item form (NewForm.aspx). The long column names were causing a horizontal scroll at times and just plain didn’t look right.
3 Minute Screencast: Combine Multiple Documents to Create a Master Document (End User SharePoint)
Many times I find people looking in the wrong direction when trying to find a SharePoint solution to one of their business problems. In this case, the question isn’t “How can I use SharePoint to combine multiple documents into a single, master document?” The real question is “How can I combine multiple documents into a single, master document?” It has nothing to do with SharePoint… the documents just happen to reside there.
Limiting the People Picker and Profile Import from AD to Certain Group (Boris Gomiunik)
If you have a SharePoint environment which not every employee in the organization uses you’re stuck with two obsticles: 1) How to limit that the person is not selected and/or added as a member of the site collection (because of licencing issues) 2) How to stop MOSS from importing entire AD domain or forest. If you’re stuck with 100 users from 1000 to enter information manually can be a pain.

Announcing SharePoint Project Management Central (The Bamboo Team Blog)
If you want to manage projects in SharePoint you have probably discovered that there are two “out of the box” solutions that seem to be at polar extremes. If you want to implement sophisticated project management features like critical path analyses, manage large project tasks, resources, costs, do portfolio analysis, etc., you can use MS/Project and implement Project Server, using SharePoint to manage documents, lists and discussion threads. Or, you can build your own complicated spreadsheets. On the other extreme, if you have very light-weight needs, you can manage simple tasks and lists right in native SharePoint and take advantage of its extended collaboration features along the way.
