No Vertically-focused Microsoft Office on the Docket (For Now) (ZDNet)
A report in Advertising Age earlier this week, entitled “Microsoft to Create ‘Office Suite’ for Advertising,” had me wondering whether Microsoft had decided to pursue a strategy I first heard about years ago: Creating customized versions of Office for specific vertical markets.
Microsoft to Put Windows 7 on USB Sticks (The Inquirer)
RUMOURS HAVE IT that Microsoft will offer Windows 7 on USB thumb drives. The report surfaced at CNET, which heard the news from one of its sources close to the Vole, apparently, who may or may not have heard it from a bloke down the pub.
Windows 7: Home Premium vs. Professional vs. Ultimate (Softpedia)
It was bound that with Microsoft having made public the pricing details on the next iteration of the Windows client, the company would also introduce initiatives designed to help consumers decide on the Windows 7 edition best suited for them. And what better way than an operating system editions measuring contest? The software giant and partners have already started accepting pre-orders for Windows 7, which is scheduled to launch officially on October 22, 2009.
Microsoft Taking No Chances, Cuts Price Of Windows 7 (eWeek)
Microsoft plans price cuts, free upgrades and other incentives to spread Windows 7 to as many users as possible once the operating system becomes available to the public in October.
Microsoft Focuses on 'Pragmatic Interoperability' (SD Times)
Microsoft receives feedback through many channels, but it chose to place itself in the hot seat in May at a closed-door meeting of its Interoperability Customer Executive Council (ICEC). The feedback that it received helped Microsoft form a more pragmatic approach to interoperability that focused on customer scenarios, two executives said, but critics maintain that Microsoft is not entirely sincere in its efforts.
The 6 Worst Cloud Security Mistakes (Network Computing)
Unless you've been snoozing under an old mainframe in your data center, the pressure to push some of your IT operations off-site and into a service provider's ‘cloud’ is probably weighing heavily on your mind as you face shrinking IT and security budgets and increasing compliance requirements. Let's face it: Everyone is under pressure to make do with less while providing more accountability for securing their data, especially small and midsize businesses. In some cases, that may mean outsourcing some of your IT operations as money and manpower gradually dwindle.
Enterprise 2.0 Conference Impressions (ZDNet)
I’m in seat 14c on a Virgin America flight back from Boston to San Francisco after an exhilarating Enterprise 2.0 Conference. There’s a lot of similarities between this airline and the Enterprise 2.0 movement. The plane has wifi and a good modern user experience but essentially hooks into and relies on a large amount of legacy infrastructure: the airport and runway I just took off from isn’t changing anytime soon and serves a broad variety of other aircraft transporting people and materials.

SharePoint IA: Store Information Close to the Point of Ownership (Mastering SharePoint Community)
When it's all said and done, users of a document management system typically have many places they can contribute content. In many implementations, these points of contribution can be so scattered it promotes confusion and future administration/maintenance problems. For the purposes of this article, I want to focus on the Business Operations Content. This is typically the content that is important to the day-to-day operations of a business, content lifecycle is managed and user interaction is governed. Meaning, the intent is to provide a structured approach to the contribution and management of content so we can produce a level of trustability and findability.
Evolution (Essential SharePoint)
As SharePoint 2010 looms in to view, it's not a bad idea to look back at the incredible distance we have come in the SharePoint world. I'm not talking about the platform, I'm talking about us. For example, back in 2003 almost no one had a staging server -- development was frequently done directly in production in a site collection named /sites/test or something similar. Today, three-stage development is standard practice: development > staging > production. Some shops add a fourth or fifth level to the deployment process.
How to Build a Change Control System in SharePoint (meetdux)
Have you ever experienced ... Customers adding scope halfway through the project? Management cutting your project budget? Project resources performing unplanned project tasks because the customer says so?
SharePoint Security - Wimbledon, Strawberries and a Scotsman (Andy Dale SharePoint Blog)
This week I am going to talk about the tricky topic of Managing SharePoint Security. Three words that can bring many an IT Manager out in a sweat. Similar to when the Air-Con stops working in the Server Room.

I’m really looking forward to this conference & hope to see many of you there!
SPTech Conference Recap (Mauro Cardarelli)
I spent a few days this week at the SPTech Conference in Boston, doing a session on requirements gathering for SharePoint and working the Nintex booth with Mike Fitzmaurice. First, some observations…

Enable Anonymous Comments in SharePoint Blogs? Check! (SharePoint Blank)
As promised, it's (past) time to dive back into the SharePoint Blank Mailbag, and today's victim winner is a Program Manager who asks about the availability of a nifty bit of functionality (which hadn't yet occurred to me) which would support anonymous comments on a blog within a SharePoint portal: I would like to set up a SharePoint-based "suggestion box" so that people around the company can make comments and suggestions about our program. However, for this to work the way I want, people need to have the ability to offer ANONYMOUS comments. And of course no one can access our SharePoint portal unless they are logged in.
