Report: Microsoft To Unveil Office Web Apps (Channel Web)
Microsoft will unveil the Office 2010 beta and Office Web Applications at its Worldwide Partner Conference next week in New Orleans, the Microsoft enthusiast blog Neowin reported Thursday. First unveiled last October at Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference, Office Web Applications are lightweight versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that are designed to run inside a Web browser. They're part of Microsoft's goal of offering a consistent Office experience that spans PCs, mobile devices, and browsers.

Microsoft Takes on Adobe with Silverlight 3 (TG Daily)
In a challenge to Adobe Flash, Microsoft has released its new web multimedia player Silverlight 3, a browser plug-in enabling audio, vector graphics and animation. The company says it allows streaming of high-definition video in full screen with stutter-free live and on-demand video.

Will Chrome Endanger Android? (ZDNet)
With its entry into the market with Chrome OS, Google will be sending two operating systems into the netbook space. The company said it's targeting Chrome OS at netbooks, a market that it's set to enter, thanks to its Android mobile OS; Acer is already preparing an Android netbook and analysts are predicting the OS could do well in the low-end of the netbook market.

Locally, In the Azure Cloud or Chrome? (Redmond Developer News)
When Google debuted its Chrome browser last fall, it was clear that an operating system wasn't far behind. On Tuesday, the company made it official. The Google Chrome OS, described by the company as "Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel," will be made available as open source code later this year. Google has had undeniable success in the browser wars, reporting that 30 million people use the Chrome browser on a regular basis.

Bing Comes To Hotmail (Tech Crunch)
Microsoft has upgraded its Quick Add feature in Hotmail, first announced earlier this year, with a number of features from their new Bing search engine. We’re not talking about a small number of users who will be affected. Hotmail is still by far the largest web mail provider on the Internet, with 343 million monthly users according to Comscore. Second and third are Yahoo (285 million) and Gmail (146 million). A year ago Hotmail had just 273 million users, so it is still growing rapidly.

Microsoft Still Attracts Managed Services Crowd (MSP Mentor)
Windows no longer sits at the center of the IT universe. But Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC09) still knows how to attract a big crowd — including most of the major managed service software providers and MSPs themselves. Here are five MSP-centric topics MSPmentor will track at the event.

Clippy Stars in New Office 2010 Promo Video (CNET)
I'm not sure "spell check this" has the same ring as "I'll be back," but I have enjoyed the series of promo videos for Office 2010 that try to cast the software as the plot of an action movie. The latest installment shows the grave of Clippy, the oft-mocked help tool that has been absent from recent versions of the productivity software.

Custom SharePoint 2007 Site Collection Creation Page (SharePoint Automation)
A lot of people that are using SharePoint 2007 (WSS or MOSS) for collaboration have either enabled self service site creation in which they allow their end-users to create a page using the scsignup.aspx page or they have some process in place in which an IT administrator creates site collections for their users.  Usually companies go the later route due to limitations with the self service site creation process; specifically, you cannot have the site created in a specific database, there's no way to filter the templates available, and there's no obvious way to lock the functionality down to a specific group of users though once you figure it out it's pretty easy (see Gavin's post on the subject: http://blog.gavin-adams.com/2007/09/13/restricting-self-service-site-creation/).

Azure Explanation for the Code Phobic (Matthew McDermott)
I found this great video explaining Azure. What is Windows Azure?

SharePoint Multi-Media Center: Dynamically Generate a URL String (End User SharePoint)
One of the annoyances of trying to use a file name in a calculated column is that the “Name” column cannot be used in a calculation. This limits the ability to create a dynamically generated link when trying to trigger LyteBox or build a URL string. In this screencast, I’ll show a manual way to handle this when entering the metadata information for an item. Tomorrow, I’ll show a technique for using workflow to generate the column entry so there will be less chance of error.

Use Windows Azure as your SharePoint Records Center (Wictor Wilén)
Microsoft SharePoint contains functionality for Records Management, which essentially is a storage for documents that you would like to store and manage in a separate records center to meet certain legal or other requirements or just to make backups of certain document revisions. To be able to create a Records Center you need to have Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS). On the other hand you only need Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) to send documents to the Records Center.

Creating a Sub-Site of a Publishing Site that is NOT a Publishing Site in SharePoint (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
Another quick blog post for you guys.  There seems to be some confusion out there even among those who claim to be experts in SharePoint.  I was told as late as yesterday that you cannot create a sub-site for a Publishing Site that is not a Publishing Site.  I knew this to be incorrect from conversations with other individuals but had never actually sat down and figured it out.  So, @LoriGowin and I spent 15 minutes on this yesterday to prove it could actually be done.

Bamboo Goes to New Orleans for the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Bamboo Solutions is heading to the Big Easy next week for the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference and ... wow, trying to schedule sessions and WPC Connect meetings with current and prospective partners is a lot of hard work. Four full days is beginning to seem not nearly enough time, so I wanted to make sure that all Bamboo Partners are aware of the Bamboo Happy Hour we are holding on Wednesday night, from 5-7pm at Gordon Biersch – right across the street from the convention center.  Though we're attending, we won’t be exhibiting in the EXPO this year, so if you planned to find us there, please head over to Gordon Biersch on Wednesday from 5-7pm for a drink on us instead!

Cutting Edge Technologies Lost in the Din of the Roaring Twenties (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Christopher was able to track down why my password wasn't working; as it turns out, he apparently moved my primary mainframe terminal several months ago, and I've been trying to put my password into that micro-oven he and Bethany bought for me last winter. That explains the constant beeping, and may have something to do with this rash I've developed.

About Web Part Page personal and shared views (Windows SharePoint Services)
A Web Part Page is always in one of two views: shared view or personal view. When a Web Part page is in shared view, all users see the same page and any changes you make in shared view are intended for all users to see. When a Web Part page is in personal view, you see any personal changes you have made and any changes you make in this view are intended just for you to see.
