Microsoft Plans Free, Online Version of Office (LA Times)
Everyone predicted Microsoft Corp. wouldn't take long to fire back against Google Inc.'s latest foray into its home turf. It took less than a week. On Monday, Microsoft said it would offer a free version of its popular Office software suite that would run on the Internet.

Microsoft Rubs Web 2.0 Noses in SharePoint Cash Pile (The Register)
WPC. Customers want them. Microsoft is delivering them. And partners should sell and support them. That would be the online versions of Microsoft's existing applications - according to Microsoft. Microsoft's business applications chief Stephen Elop on Monday told Microsoft's overwhelmingly desktop-and-server-oriented partner army that nine out of 10 of their customers want to transition a portion of their IT to the cloud.

Microsoft to Deliver Invitation-only Tech Preview Build of Office 2010 (ZDNet)
On July 13, Microsoft is slated to make available a limited technical test build of its Office 2010 suite to select testers via the company’s Connect download site. The new build is not a public beta. A public beta of Office 2010 is slated for later this year, as company officials have said previously. The promised July test build, which will be downloadable starting today, is of Office 2010 Professional — one of the five planned Office 2010 SKUs — only.

First Take: Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview (CNET)
The Microsoft Office 2010 technical preview is available today through invite only and--though it's not in its final form--there are plenty of feature enhancements to be excited about, if Microsoft can pull it off. According to Microsoft, the focus of this update was on three things: to make work flows more efficient; to effectively use Web applications to make your work available anywhere; and to make collaboration with others much easier. In this CNET First Take, we'll take a look at some of the notable feature changes across many of the applications. Microsoft says Office 2010 will let you use your PC, phone, and the Web to make your projects come together more efficiently. From what we've seen, they might be right and the Web applications might also give Google Docs a run for their money.

Microsoft Readies Channel Partner Overhaul (Channel Web)
Microsoft Monday will unveil plans to overhaul its channel partner program, including doing away with the current "gold," "certified" and "general register" designations in favor of ranking partners according to their competencies. The company will also debut specific plans to help partners that work with its Dynamics ERP and CRM applications to focus more on vertical markets.

This Week, Microsoft Makes Its Case For Windows 7 and Office 2010 (Business Week)
It’s going to be a big week for Microsoft. Thousands of distributors, systems integrators and software developers, among others, have convened in New Orleans for the company’s annual Worldwide Partners Conference. They’ll have plenty of news to ponder. As we noted in our cover story a few weeks back, the company will unveil Office 2010, which may be the most radical release since the original Office suite in 1989 (not a particularly high-bar, some say). Rather than provide tools to enhance personal productivity, the new Office will offer features so that co-workers and others can simultaneously collaborate with each other—say, to write a sales proposal or nail down a sales forecast. This will require hundreds of millions of users to re-learn the product—always a risky proposition—but it makes up for it with a variety of other enhancements. Most notable: free, if less useful, Web-based versions of Office apps such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. See TechCrunch’s product review here.

Microsoft Preparing Gazelle Browser-OS Hybrid (eWeek)
Microsoft's ace in the hole in its upcoming battle against Google Chrome OS, the search giant’s new browser-based operating system, could be a browser-OS hybrid project code-named Gazelle.

Google Strives to Help Online Software Catch Up (The Wall Street Journal)
Google Inc.'s plans for a new operating system based on its Chrome Web browser is a big bet that online programs can eventually surpass desktop software. Now the Internet giant is pushing hard to make that happen, enticing developers to take advantage of several technologies to improve the speed, esthetics and reliability of software running in a Web browser.

Is Chrome OS a "Disruptive Innovation?" (The Huffington Post)
Last week Google sent shockwaves through the technology world when it announced plans to introduce an operating system in fall 2010. Pundits quickly termed Chrome OS "classic disruptive innovation" that promised to up-end historic market leader Microsoft. Do the pundits have it right?

Announcing SharePoint 2010 Technical Preview (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Today, we’re announcing that SharePoint 2010 has reached the technical preview engineering milestone. The SharePoint team is running a limited, invitation only Technical Preview program. While we’re not sharing SharePoint 2010 details at this point, we did want to give our customers & partners a sneak peek at SharePoint 2010! We’re very excited about SharePoint 2010 and looking forward to the SharePoint Conference this October where we’ll talk about all the investment areas across workloads and the platform. What we’re sharing today is just a fraction of what will be in SharePoint 2010!

Developer Changes in SharePoint 2010 (Made 4 the .Net)
Paul Andrew talks about the new Developer functionality in SharePoint 2010 in a webcast on the new SharePoint 2010 site. The is also a download of 2010  (Technical Preview) Developer Documentation too. The webcast goes through and shows the new SharePoint integration with Visual Studio 2010 which I’m hoping will be available in the next public beta as it got missed out of the first. Paul also seems to concentrate along time on the BDC stuff which I believe is because it’s not heavily been used as it’s always been too hard.

Impressive SharePoint Column (Andy Dale SharePoint Blog)
SharePoint lists may not be favoured by many developers but can be a great tool for all sized companies, especially as Windows SharePoint Services is a free download. In my blog this week I am going to show the different columns available in a SharePoint list and especially how powerful the ‘Lookup’ and ‘Calculated’ fields can be. Then for all the football fans out there (and Man United followers) you will be able to download free of charge the ‘My Team’s Performance 2009/10 Season’ site template. I say it is free of charge but if you would like to send a donation to the ‘Help Aston Villa Buy a Gareth Barry Replacement Fund’ this would be gratefully received by Martin O’Neill.

Service Pack 2 Prevents an On-change Workflow from Starting Itself (Microsoft SharePoint Designer Team Blog)
Hello all, Stephen here again — I’m a writer for SharePoint Designer. I’d like to tell you about a fix that was included in Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. This fix affects workflows designed in SharePoint Designer 2007. Then I’ll show you how to intentionally create a workflow loop by using two workflows instead of one.

Oh Good They Got Rid of the SharePoint 2007 Pie…Oh Crap They Replaced it with a SharePoint 2010 Pizza (Made 4 the .Net)
This is not just a “SharePoint Designer free” blog spam post…so please read on Smile First impressions of the new SharePoint 2010 sneak peak…and the new Overview Video by Tom Rizzo.

Managing Lists and Libraries with Thousands or Millions of Items (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
One of the biggest challenges for a document management system built on SharePoint is scaling lists.  There is actually quite a bit of knowledge spread across the help files, TechNet documentation, in whitepapers and on blogs… but it’s still quite difficult to navigate this challenge.  I also see this as a step in the progress toward upgrade.  People that are looking to optimize their environments should be looking at large lists sooner than later… here are some of the impacts…

SharePoint – Cannot Upload Documents Larger than 30MB, on Windows Server 2008 or SBS 2008 Application Servers (Brain Litter)
Ok, here's the situation (my parents went away on a week's vacation… no wait, that's the Fresh Prince)… I have a MOSS 2007 Server. The maximum upload size was long set to larger than the default 50MB (100MB) in Central Administration. The base OS is Windows Server 2008. I was working away happily on a Word Document that has been growing in size all week (full of screen shots). It had reached a point today though where I could no longer upload it. It had reached a size of 30MB. It resulted in errors like these…

The What's New Web Part for SharePoint (SharePoint Blank)
For the third time in as many weeks, a SharePoint Blank Mailbag investigation has ended up leading me to a solution on CodePlex.  Good thing CodePlex is a community initiative, else I might have to start worrying about people thinking I'm on the take!  Today's question highlights what strikes me as a particularly useful feature request regarding automatic notification of what's changed within a given SharePoint site: Is it possible to have information on the Home Page that lists everything that has changed on the site over the last xx period of time?  I'm assuming it would be a Web Part?

Step Right Up for a SharePoint 2010 Sneak Peek (SharePoint 2010)
In conjunction with the Worldwide Partner Conference and the (limited) release of the Office 2010 Technical Preview, Microsoft today launched the official SharePoint 2010 Sneak Peek.  Prominently featuring three videos for key audiences, the Sneak Peek offers the first official public unveiling of SharePoint 2010.  The first of these videos is a 32-minute Overview and Sneak Peek hosted by Tom Rizzo, Senior Director of the SharePoint Team at Microsoft, in which he discusses the value proposition of SharePoint 2010 and includes demos offering an exclusive first look at the SharePoint 2010 experience.  Feature highlights include: New User Interface, including the New Ribbon; Web editing capabilities; Silverlight Web Part; and Rich theming.  Tom also discusses what you can do to get ready for SharePoint 2010, and there is a Get Ready for SharePoint 2010 page available on the site, featuring checklists designed for both IT Professionals and Developers.

Office 2010: The Movie (SharePoint 2010)
SharePoint gets frustratingly short shrift in this tongue in cheek teaser trailer for Office 2010: The Movie, but it's such a clever (and just plain cool) idea to present the forthcoming release of Office 2010 as a Jerry Bruckheimer-style extravaganza that it would be churlish to complain about the blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod to SharePoint.  Just sit back and enjoy the ride that Traffik Filmworks' Dennis Liu has crafted for Microsoft:
