SharePoint 2007 Content Migration, A Case Study (CMS WiRE)
Migrating existing content into a SharePoint system, and specifically into a SharePoint Page Library — the foundation of a SharePoint Publishing website — is neither simple nor straightforward. To migrate content into SharePoint we took a look at a number of tools, both commercial tools and custom-built ones paired with a data aggregation framework. Here is a review of our experience, a summary of our final approach and some postmortem thoughts.

Microsoft's Bing gains another 1% or US Search (Reuters)
LONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Microsoft increased its share of the U.S. Internet search market by another 1 percentage point in July, taking its combined share with new search partner Yahoo  to 20.36 percent, according to data released on Monday. Internet data firm StatCounter said Microsoft's new Bing search engine had 9.41 percent of the U.S. market in July, up from 8.23 percent in June. Google's share slipped to 77.54 percent from 78.48 percent.

Microsoft: Buy now, buy later... ( ZDNet)
Microsoft is cutting the retail price of Windows 7 in an attempt to encourage entrenched XP users to upgrade, and to be able to squeeze more money from users down the line. Over the past few days a lot of ink (real and digital) has been spilled regarding Microsoft retail pricing for Windows 7. The retail price of Windows isn’t usually important because most people get their hands on a new version of Windows with a new PC. With Windows 7, Microsoft wants to decouple Windows upgrades from PC upgrades, hoping that people who are holding onto an old PC will give it a new lease of life by upgrading the OS rather than the whole system.

Google Billboard Ads Gun for Microsoft and Promote (PCWorld)
Google will use billboard advertising to promote Google Apps, the company's enterprise productivity suite. Google will use giant billboards in four U.S. cities to encourage business users to consider using the Google Apps package. From Monday, commuters in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston will see a different message promoting Google Apps each weekday throughout August. Called "Going Google", the campaign targets IT managers stuck in traffic and informs on the benefits of switching to Google Apps.

Serious price tag overshadows cloud computing (Federal Computer Week)
Cloud computing promises cost savings, increased flexibility and improved remote access to resources, but these advantages come at a cost, a researcher warned at the Black Hat Briefings security conference. Data and application owners can lose control over their resources, the perimeter protecting them, and the access controls that allow their use, said Alex Stamos of iSEC Partners. Owners also can lose important legal protection by turning data over to a third-party host, he added.

SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010 – Sneak Peek… (UK SharePoint Team)
Recently, the SharePoint Product Team released information regarding the next version of SharePoint; SharePoint 2010. News regarding the next version of Microsoft Office; Office 2010 is also surfacing. As I regularly get questions from customers regarding both products I thought I’d pull together a list of useful resources and information.

SharePoint Developer Productivity Tip #3 - Easy CAML Queries (Elumenotion)
Previously, I wrote about CAML queries and the CAML Query Builder. I no longer use this tool. This is not because of any lack in the tool but rather a desire to simplify my development environment - a shift away from many specialty tools to a few generalized ones. Chief among these is SharePoint Manager 2007. In the previous productivity tip, I talked about using SPM to extract site columns for features (you can do something similar for content types with a bit more effort). This one is about CAML queries.

SharePoint, Employee Directories and Temporary Employees (Mauro Cardarelli)
What is Mary’s phone extension?  For many, the answer involves looking to the right or left of their computer monitors to a piece of paper tacked to the wall that lists all employees and phone numbers.  I know; not the most efficient method… but it works.  At some point, someone has a ‘eureka’ moment and realizes that you can use SharePoint and the native ability to import Active Directory profile data to (pretty easily) build an employee directory.  Hold on.  Like all things, you need to think this one through.

August Monthly Giveaway + 30% Off Coupon Code for O'Reilly.com! (SharePoint Reviews)
We've had a recent drought in our monthly giveaways (July), but I'm here to cure that with a brand new giveaway sure to be enjoyed by all! The good folks over at O'Reilly have donated a free title to our prospective monthly winner, and they've even thrown in a couple of choices for the winner as well. Rather than giving away a specific book this month, you'll be allowed to pick from the list below AND choose it in print or digital format! So if you're one of those bleeding edge techies sporting a Kindle 2, then grab a digital version instead of the caveman-like printed version.

Evaluating SharePoint Project Management Tools - What Questions to Ask! (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
2009I saw an online conversation recently where the first person person asked the second person to write up a project management on SharePoint tools comparison, so that the first person could then know which was the best tool.  Seemed like a reasonable request.  The second person said he was doing just that.  As it happens the first person is very closely aligned with one tool, so it is hard to know how he can be fully objective.  Then which of us is fully objective I guess!  I of course can see some value in this exercise.  However!  The real question is of course what are the requirements of the first person's organization.  In any event, I figure that it is probably more valuable to give the first person a list of really good questions to ask so they can make up their own mind once they gather the data.  Or maybe the first person would use this list - or one like it.  Here is my suggestion for such a list!  These questions are based on the questions we get asked at BrightWork day in day out.  These are what evaluating teams ask us.  Let me know if you think I missed any questions.  Look forward to your feedback as ever.

Guest Blog by Mindsharp's Ben Curry - Bad Practice #2: No Governance Plan (The Bamboo Team Blog)
So, I'm going straight to the bad practice #2 because of conversations with some peers yesterday here in the UK. We see lots of blogs and articles about SharePoint Governance, and they are all very lengthy and probably applicable to most organizations. But, what I've seen is the average SharePoint administrator is the Exchange Admin, firewall admin, and sometimes the accountant! The point is - many folks don't have time to go through a lengthy governance process. But, we know what kind of trouble they'll get in without it! So, what's the answer? I call it 'Bare Metal Governance.'

Publishing Framework Best Practices, Presented by Paul Stork and Daniel Webster - A BPC Video Exclusive (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Last September's inaugural Best Practices SharePoint Conference (BPC) in Washington, D.C. launched what has become one of the world's premier SharePoint conferences.  Thanks to a gracious offer from the Best Practices Conference organizers, and as we look forward to the return of the Conference to D.C. next month, Bamboo Nation is proud to begin presenting a video series of sessions recorded at last year's conference, featuring some of the world's foremost SharePoint experts. Paul Stork and Daniel Webster are the latest hosts in our series, with their one hour BPC session on Best Practices on Publishing Framework for IT Pros.  A SharePoint Server MVP, Paul's name should be familiar to Bamboo Nation as a result of his guest blogs, most recently on the topic of Automatic Deletion of a Former Employee's My Site. Daniel is an instructor with Mindsharp where he develops and writes courseware for SharePoint Administrators.

Managed properties return null values when the Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query.TrimDuplicates property equals false and the Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query.RowLimit property exceeds a certain value in SharePoint Server 2007 (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
You perform a search query. If the Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query.TrimDuplicates property is set to false and the Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query.RowLimit property is set to a certain value, certain custom managed properties and out-of-box (OOB) managed properties return null values.

Using a team Web site to improve collaboration (Windows SharePoint Services)
Working effectively as a team on projects can be challenging. Collaborating on files and documents without duplication, error, and chaos presents an even bigger challenge. While traditional collaboration tools such as e-mail and desktop files are useful, these methods sometimes fall short when you need to collaborate on materials in a fast-paced environment.
