What's Microsoft's Next Billion-dollar Business?(Hint: it's Not Search) (ZDNet)
While many company watchers continue to fret over what Microsoft will and won’t do to make money in the search/online advertising space, there are other less sexy Microsoft business units plodding successfully along with relatively little public notice. Until fairly recently, SharePoint was one of those businesses. But now that Microsoft’s SharePoint sales have passed the $1 billion barrier (they were $1.3 billion for fiscal 2009, which ended for Microsoft on June 30), what’s Microsoft’s next big thing? What products is the company betting on to become the next big, near-term hits?
Windows 7: Four Reasons to Upgrade, Four Reasons to Stay Away (Computer World)
The release of Windows 7 to manufacturing begins a tale of two operating systems: the one you want and the one you don't. It is packed with improvements and cool stuff, but it still carries a whiff of Vista that may put XP diehards off. That said, people who have gotten used to Vista will enjoy the fact that Windows 7 looks the same but acts a whole lot better.
Google Android To Challenge RIM For Enterprise Users (Information Week)
Google will soon compete harder with Research In Motion to nab mobile professionals with its Android mobile operating system, according to Google's mobile director Andy Rubin. Google's Linux-based mobile OS is on a handful of smartphones like the T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G that primarily target casual consumers, but Rubin said Android could have more business-friendly features by the end of the year. The company plans to have bi-annual over-the-air Android updates that could add new services and abilities.
Microsoft Works to Claim Its Own Slice of the Cloud (Beta News)
It would appear to be the most lucrative new platform in all of computing: the "cloud" -- the space on the Internet from which applications and services can be presented to customers without the need for physical location. It was once called the "grid," but the fact that companies other than IBM managed to effectively rechristen the idea speaks to its inability -- along with everyone else's -- to build a clear and concise message around just what the cloud is.
Bing Sees Slight Uptick in July (CNET)
It'll probably still be a long time before people start saying things like "I'd spend some time binging that guy before I go on a date with him," but in the U.S. things are looking up for Microsoft's new search engine, Bing, which was unveiled in May. Web analytics firm StatCounter released analysis Monday stating that Bing slightly increased Microsoft's share of the U.S. search market in July. It now claims 9.41 percent, up from 8.23 percent in June.
Microsoft To Scrap Europe Version of Windows 7 (Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine)
Microsoft changed its plans about issuing a special European version of Windows 7 that would lack Internet Explorer, according to a company announcement. The about-face was explained by Dave Heiner, Microsoft's vice president and deputy general counsel, in a Friday blog post. He cited two main reasons why Windows 7E (for Europe) wasn't the best approach.
The Media Sells the Google Cloud. The Enterprise Buys Microsoft On-premises (CNET)
There's a big disconnect between what the media likes to write about and what the enterprise likes to buy. I suspect this is largely because the future is a much more interesting topic. Enterprise software might be a great topic for advertisers for Lunesta or Ambien, but it's woefully dull for everyone else.
Could Google Docs Land You In Jail? (Information Week)
Using Google Docs could put you in legal hot water if you're unable to comply with a subpoena to produce documents during a trial. That's one of the implications of cloud computing discussed during the American Bar Association's Business Law Section's Cyberspace Law Committee on Sunday.

Continuing with our SharePoint 101 screencast series recorded from SharePoint Saturday Baltimore, in Part 4, I demonstrate how to emulate network share navigation in document libraries without creating folders and explain how SharePoint permissions work.
Adding Themes the Supported Way! (zevenseas)
Yes! I’ve created a solution that allows you to add a theme the supported way, meaning that you don’t have to overwrite the default SPThemes.XML that resides in the LAYOUTS folder. The only thing you have to do is add the Theme to the THEMES folder and add your own custom SPThemes.XML somewhere in the 12 hive (a folder in the FEATURES folder could be a good example) and add this path to my solution and you’re done.
Unit Testing SharePoint in a 64-bit Environment (Binary Wave)
I've recently upgraded all my development environments to pure 64-bit (except, of course, for Visual Studio, which continues to be a 32-bit laggard) to take advantage of the extra memory space available in x64. When working with really large lists and datasets, having less than 1GB for the w3wp process is self-defeating - it's not uncommon to crash the worker process even with paged gridviews. Plus, the performance of SharePoint and SQL Server on 64-bit is head and shoulders above x86, making it easier to work with multiple VM's at once.
SharePoint Reusable Content (SharePoint Branding & Design)
I can pretty much say I know my way around SharePoint… But every once in a while you learn about a feature that you never knew was there… Most of the time it's those annoying bugs that we call “features” but are true head against the wall things that make you go hmmmm… But this time it's a good thing…

If you take some SharePoint files offline, performance is very slow when you perform a full crawl for the remaining online files (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
You archive some SharePoint files to a cheaper form of storage, such as a magnetic tape handler. Then you take those files offline. However, when you perform a full crawl for the remaining online files, performance is very slow.
