With titles such as Madden NFL 10, Rock Band and Sims in its portfolio, video game developer Electronic Arts has to stay on cool's edge -- inside the company as much as out. "When people come in the door here these days, they say, 'Hey, how do I connect with people? Do you have a social network?' " said Bert Sandie, director of technical excellence in the University Group at Electronic Arts (EA) in Vancouver. "The reality is, having a social network , search and a knowledge portal, especially in larger corporations, is essentially becoming the cost of doing business, like email was 20 years ago."

Microsoft's Moves Suggest Renewed Focus on Core Business, Windows 7 (eWeek)
Microsoft's eliminations of a number of experimental and legacy programs and services throughout 2009 suggest that the company is seeking to consolidate around core products such as the upcoming Windows 7 operating system and Office 2010 during a time in which its revenues have dipped due to the recession. An analyst suggests that Microsoft's eliminated products were unsuccessful attempts to penetrate new markets.

Microsoft Offers SQL Server 2008 R2 Test Bits (Redmond Mag)
Subscribers to Microsoft's TechNet and Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) services can now get their hands on the first community technology preview (CTP) of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. The August CTP bits can be downloaded today at the TechNet and MSDN Web portals. Microsoft plans to make this CTP available to the general public on Aug. 12, which can be downloaded here at that time. A hosted test version will be available here.

Microsoft Raises Questions Over HTML 5 Standard (ZDNet)
In a mailing list posting on Friday, the software giant set out a number of points relating to the HTML 5 draft for the web-page description standard that was last formally updated in 1999. The move by Microsoft adds weight to efforts to update HTML, which have largely been driven by Apple, Google, Opera, and Mozilla.

I'm just back from vacation, and I must say that it was a pleasure to return and read Jeffrey Washington's comments on each of the preceding posts in this ongoing "What is SharePoint?" mini-series. Thanks for your feedback, Jeffrey! As well, I must confess that since I was essentially under orders to relax, stay offline, and truly enjoy my vacation, I didn't spend much time thinking about SharePoint while I was away, either in a general sense, a specific sense, or even a "What is SharePoint?" sense. But vacation is over, and the time has come to jump back into the blogging pool (which I actually already did earlier today with a short post on the Bamboo Team Blog about additional chances to win a full access pass to the Best Practices Conference), so I'm going to dedicate this installment of "What is SharePoint?" to an aspect of SharePoint whose importance I honestly don't think it's possible to overstate, and that is the worldwide community of users which rallies around SharePoint. You see, SharePoint is a platform that engenders a truly admirable level of passion in its adherents, which, in turn, has fostered the creation and continued existence of an equally admirable ecosystem: the SharePoint community.
