Google’s Wave is Building Off the Enterprise Shore (KM World)
Google’s Wave (http://wave.google.com) is a Swiss Army knife of communication and information management services. What most pundits have downplayed is the potential for Google to wear down certain market barriers. In the consumer market, Google has had no answer to the surging growth of Facebook.com or the microblogging phenomenon Twitter.com. But there’s another granite cliff standing between Google and significant revenue: Microsoft SharePoint. The Google Wave may be the digital force needed to grind down the SharePoint barrier. Google wants to tap into the billions of dollars Microsoft has in its enterprise market.
Office.com Goes Live. Nothing To See Here. (blackweb 2.0)
Microsoft’s shiny new domain Office.com went live today. When they first bought the domain earlier this month, the blogosphere went crazy with speculations about what they would be doing with it. Google pretty much owns the whole cloud concept, being able to store and edit your documents right on the web, so it seems logical that Microsoft will have to enter this territory at some point if they want to remain relevant. From businesses to student, it just seems more logical and cost-effective to use free online tools rather than pay an arm and a leg to buy Microsoft Office. As far as Office.com goes, there are a few things at play here that need clarification.
Opinion: What's Wrong with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (Computer World)
There's no doubt that Mac OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, is a worthwhile upgrade -- a no-brainer for people with Intel Macs. I've pointed out the 7 best features in Snow Leopard, and my three-part series of slideshows details the many enhancements in Snow Leopard for all users, for office users, and for power users.
Measuring Windows 7 Appeal to Businesses (CNET)
There are a whole bunch of reasons why Windows 7 should appeal to businesses, but one threat--the still-sluggish economy--could overshadow all of those reasons to move to the new operating system. "I think they have a really good product at a really bad time," Directions on Microsoft analyst Michael Cherry said in a telephone interview this week.
Side-By-Side: Snow Leopard And Windows 7 (Channel Web)
Windows 7 may be the closest Microsoft has gotten to offering a desktop operating system as performance-nimble, aesthetically pleasing and, dare we say it, as potentially secure as Apple has delivered with OS X. The relatively close release dates of both OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and Windows 7 plus the awesomeness of both operating systems are generating much publicity. Inevitably, both OSes will also be the subject of much comparison. This may not be a true apples-to-apples comparison, depending on which side of the fan base you reside on, but here's a look at features, side by side, of both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard:
Dell, HP Back Microsoft in Word Legal Battle (Computer World)
Dell and Hewlett-Packard, the world's two largest computer makers, have sided with Microsoft in its appeal of a ban that would block Word sales in the U.S. The two companies warned that the injunction would ripple through the PC ecosystem, and that without more time to test any Microsoft tweaks, users might lose data.
The Heavyweight Clash: Microsoft vs. Google (Mobile Magazine)
Microsoft and Google have become embroiled in a battle that could oust RIM and change the face of mobile working altogether. Microsoft and Google have become rivals in the mobile space as enterprise makes a u-turn away from desktop PCs and onto handheld devices.
The Next Leap Forward in Search (The Motley Fool)
Bing is good, but it should be better. Specifically, it should be more social. Bing ought to be able to show you what others think of the content you're searching for -- whether they have saved it, how they rate it, and how they use tags to categorize it.

Announcing the Fourth Release of the Microsoft SharePoint Administration Toolkit (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
I’m pleased to announce that the fourth version of the Microsoft SharePoint Administration Toolkit is available for download! This is our last planned offering of new features and functionality for this toolkit that services both Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services v3.0. That said, we do plan to release a separate new toolkit for SharePoint 2010. With this release we added functionality to address various difficult administrative tasks. These include SharePoint Diagnostics Tool improvements, the Permissions Reporting Tool, the Quota Management command, and Security Configuration Wizard Manifests. Let’s look at these areas:
Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010 (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
Business Contact Manager is a powerful contact and customer information management feature of Outlook. The new version of Business Contact Manager (BCM) for Outlook 2010 is far more powerful and flexible than BCM for Outlook 2007. Manage your business contacts, track opportunities through the sales cycle, send personalized marketing campaigns, and organize your business projects.

Patching Standalone ESX4 Using vSphere CLI on Windows (Brain Litter)
Thanks to Robert from our office for this visual walkthrough of the ESX4 patching process, when you don't have Virtual Center. ESXi 4 hosts can be patched using the GUI tool VMHostUpdate. ESX4 hosts, on the other hand, have to be patched manually if there is no vCenter involved in managing the host. There are CLI tools on the host that allow for patch management but the VMware vSphere CLI toolset for Windows workstations makes the job a much easier task.
Social is Coming and Soon (Brendon Schwartz Collaborating on SharePoint)
It looks like more and more people are picking up on the Social side of things now that they are hearing more about SharePoint 2010 and the Social features. A few years ago now, I talked with many people telling them that Social Computing and Applications would be a part of their Enterprise landscape. With SharePoint 2010 on the horizon people are now starting to seriously talk about it in SharePoint and I think it will be a reality sooner than later now.
User Adoption – Build It and They Will NOT Come! (The MOSS Show)
User Adoption continues to be a problem across many SharePoint deployments. Despite correctly configuring the infrastructure and developing and deploying a great solution that meets the needs of the users, users are often very slow and resistant to adopting SharePoint and using it effectively. In this Tech Ed panel discussion with local SharePoint user group leads we discuss various challenges, tips and ideas around driving and supporting this common problem.

Celebrating the Marriage of Knowledge and Creativity at the Best Practices Conference (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Another Best Practices Conference (BPC) has come and gone, and we're left with happy memories of seeing old friends, meeting new friends and, of course, a wealth of newly acquired knowledge from sessions attended over the course of the past three days. This was my second BPC, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the creativity demonstrated by a number of the session speakers in their presentations this week. Could this be a new trend in SharePoint conferences? Speaking for myself, I certainly hope so, but I understand that some speakers were marked down on the attendee-completed session evaluations with comments indicating a distaste for creative approaches to conveying technological concepts and practices. I find this baffling. Maybe it's because I'm an end user, or maybe it's because I'm a writer (and a person) who celebrates creativity, but I fail to see how approaching a complex topic from a creative angle is going to make for anything other than a positive experience for an audience.
