CitiDirect BE Leverages Office SharePoint Server 2007 (Softpedia)
When it needed to offer its corporate customers a streamlined integrated interface in tune with their particular needs and workflow, Citi chose Microsoft technology to power its global transaction services. The duo announced on September 15th, 2009 the availability of the CitiDirect BE e-banking platform, designed to leverage a variety of the Redmond-based company’s software solutions. However, both Microsoft and Citi’s Global Transaction Services (GTS) chose to emphasize the integration of Office SharePoint Server 2007 into CitiDirect BE.

U.S. Bank picks IBM's Lotus platform over Microsoft's SharePoint (Computer World)
Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank has chosen to standardize on IBM Corp.'s Lotus collaboration software, IBM said Tuesday, displacing Microsoft Corp.'s rival SharePoint-based platform. U.S. Bank plans to roll out the Lotus Quickr and Lotus Connections social Web platform for corporations. Quickr and Connections provide a file-sharing repository allowing employees to create profiles, wikis and blogs.

InformationWeek 500: Collaboration Is Key To Increased Efficiency In Manufacturing (InformationWeek)
The manufacturing industry depends on efficiency, but efficient operations are possible only with close collaboration both internally and throughout the supply chain. That's why manufacturers are ahead of other industries when it comes to collaboration software. Sixty-six percent of manufacturers deployed new collaboration tools in the past year, compared with 58% of all respondents to the InformationWeek 500 survey.

Microsoft Pushes Business Users to Start Windows 7 Upgrades Now (ZDNet)
Windows 7’s consumer launch is just over a month away. But there’s no reason business users should delay their Windows 7 deployment plans, according to the company. To accentuate its point, Microsoft is rolling out the new version of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) — a bunch of deployment-focused tools available to its volume licensees with Software Assurance contracts — months earlier than expected. Instead of holding up the new MDOP release until early 2010, as it originally planned, Microsoft is going to ship MDOP 2009 R2 at the end of October 2009 and then provide the updated MED-V virtualization tool to business users via a service pack once it is available in early 2010.

Microsoft Launches Bing 'Visual Search' (CNET)
You see that headline? "Visual Search" is in quotation marks because Monday's announcement at the TechCrunch 50 conference about Bing's new search feature is a bit of a canard. What Microsoft is launching is very cool, mind you. It's just not, strictly speaking, a search feature. At least not a general one.

Microsoft Cranks Up Windows 7 Marketing Machine (Channel Web)
Microsoft continues to set the stage for next month's general availability of Windows 7, accelerating the availability of toolkits to spur adoption of the next-generation desktop operating system and hyping the success of early deployments. Monday Microsoft said it would release its Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack 2009 R2 late next month to help organizations migrate to the upcoming Windows 7 -- right around the Oct. 22 scheduled availability of Windows 7 and much earlier than the original release date of early 2010.

Does Cloud Computing Affect Innovation? (CNET)
Earlier this summer, Jonathan Zittrain wrote a New York Times OpEd piece that discussed his concerns with the cloud computing paradigm. Zittrain stated that, while it may seem on the surface that cloud adoption is as "inevitable as the move from answering machines to voice mail," he sees some real dangers. Zittrain covered the usual concerns about data ownership, privacy, and the access that data placed in the cloud gives governments all over the world--a concern I certainly share. He went on to point out that these problems are solvable "with a little effort and political will," a view that I also adhere to.

Google Data Liberation Front Fights 'Evil' Lock-In (InformationWeek)
Google on Monday unveiled a blog and a Web site to document its campaign for data portability, a move that comes as the company is being assailed by competitors, interest groups, and the government for its online ad dominance and its digital book ambitions. Google's Data Liberation Front blog and Web site give a formal home and online face to the company's two-year old effort to end data lock-in, whereby users have limited or no ability to move their data from one online service to another.

Architecting and Deploying a SharePoint Solution for Work and Project Management (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
It is really easy to spin up a project site to manage a project on SharePoint.  With solutions like pmPoint it is now also very easy to spin up a Project Office site to manage across many projects.  If you think that SharePoint has been with us 10 years (if you start counting at the start of the Exchange (webstore) project when we at BrightWork started working with the platform, then it is very possible to imagine SharePoint being around for another 20 years.  Scary, huh!  With that in mind it makes most sense to treat SharePoint as a strategic platform and properly architect work and project management.  Measure twice and cut once, like your Granny kept telling you.  Certainly seems like wise advice in these tougher times.

Free Webcast: 8 Steps to Microsoft Project Success (Meet Dux)
If you're a project manager like me, I'm sure you work within tight schedules, changing scope and limited resources. Having a reliable tool to support you can definitely make things more efficient. If utilized appropriately, Microsoft Project is a powerful tool that can help you break a project down into manageable parts, define a realistic schedule, identify required resources and track projects accordingly.

A SharePoint Case Study – Switching on the Right Light Bulbs… (End User SharePoint)
had been engaged to work with a Welsh government inspectorate on their vision for the Microsoft SharePoint platform and how it can transform their business processes and internal\external stakeholder engagements. The organisation had seen a demonstration of a records management solution implemented at a central government department that my organisation had been involved in and felt that it met their needs for an intuitive, pragmatic approach to records management.

SharePoint 2010 Enhancements for End Users: Enhanced Themes & the Addition of Visio Services (SharePoint 2010)
We're nearing the end of my look at the new features in SharePoint 2010 as demonstrated by Tom Rizzo in his Overview and Sneak Peek video at the official SharePoint 2010 Sneak Peek site, but while the end may be near, it's not yet upon us.  Today, I'm going to show off the enhanced theming capabilities of SharePoint 2010, and also take a look at what it means that Visio Services has joined the SharePoint (and Office) family.
