SharePoint: What CIOs Should Know Before They Go (Channel Web)
Microsoft's SharePoint collaboration software is well-suited for midmarket customers, but there are some considerations CIOs need to make before rolling out the technology, said Ken Chin, research vice president at Gartner, Tuesday at Everything Channel's Midsize Enterprise Summit. Everything Channel is the parent company of Channelweb.com.

SharePoint vs. Lotus: Microsoft, IBM Go Head to Head on Collaboration (IT Business Edge)
Just how big of a deal is U.S. Bank's decision to abandon Microsoft SharePoint in favor of IBM's Lotus collaboration software, a story reported by Computerworld? "It's a very big deal," according to Bob Picciano, the IBM executive quoted in the story. Not so big, sniffed the competing Microsoft executive. Said Julia White, director of Exchange product management:

MS Project 2010: Goodbye Portfolio Server, Hello SharePoint (CMS Wire)
The Microsoft Project 2009 Conference kicked off yesterday officially, but today the big news around what will come in 2010 was announced and we have the details for you. Of course, we won't be talking about MS Project 2010 without talking about SharePoint — that's just how it will be from now on.

Microsoft Wraps Project 2010 Parcel in Ribbon (The Register)
Microsoft has unveiled a few more details about its upcoming Project 2010 application, which the firm described as the “most significant” upgrade of the software in a decade. The next iteration of the project management app includes a snugger fit with MS Outlook email. There are also new collaboration features for customers interested in the Project Professional version of the software.

Google Docs 'Widely Used' at 1-in-5 Workplaces, Reports Survey (ComputerWorld)
The near total dominance of Microsoft Office in the workplace may be getting a serious challenge from Google Docs, according to a new survey by market research firm IDC. The study's main finding is that about 1-in-5 companies reported that Google Docs is "widely used" in their workplace, however possibly as a compliment to Microsoft Office.

Microsoft's XP Freeze Out to Users: No Upgrade to Windows 7, Only Vista Need Apply (PC Authority)
The great Microsoft migration begins again this year, as millions of Windows users pledge to keep up with the latest and greatest and embrace the power of 7. Except if you're an XP user. Based on the latest Net applications market share data - that's probably most of us, 71.7% of desktops to be exact.

Why I Chose Windows 7 Over Snow Leopard (and You Should, Too) (Beta News)
Last week, I returned to using Windows 7 after spending the summer on a 13-inch MacBook Pro. Apple almost had me there for awhile, but I'm back where I belong and satisfied with the switch. Given that Apple released Snow Leopard a couple of weeks ago, Windows 7 officially launches October 22nd and there is plenty of geek debate about which OS is better, it's appropriate time to tell the story about how I went -- in the words of J.R.R. Tolkien -- "there and back again."

Has Microsoft Missed the Boat With Mobile? (OS News)
Sometime ago I conjectured that Microsoft made certain changes to IE8 to force web standards forward and drop backwards compatibility as default (a very un-Microsoft move) because of the need for the web to break out of the blinkered IE6 / Desktop-Browser view of content otherwise Microsoft would find itself unable to compete in the mobile space. It's been over a year since that article and in such a short period of time it has become ever clearer that Microsoft's mobile offerings, and their overall mobile platform strategy are failing against the dominant iPhone, the newcomer Android, and a re-invigorated Palm with WebOS.

Is Cloud Computing Secure? Prove It (eWeek)
Organizations need to take care to ensure that applications in the cloud are secure and compliant--and can be proven as such. Experts say the public cloud might not be suitable for some applications right now, but that providers will face increasing pressure to develop systems that can be used securely in a cloud computing environment.

Google Unveils Chrome 3.0, Touts 25% Speed Gain (ComputerWorld)
Google launched Chrome 3.0 today as the browser's engineering director set ambitious goals to double its market share within 12 months, then double it again within 24. Chrome 3.0, which is available only for Windows, moved from beta to what Google dubs its "stable" development channel, meaning that the browser is suitable for use by the general public, not just developers or testers willing to put up with crashes or bugs.

IE8 to SharePoint - ‘Are You Sure You Want to Navigate Away from this Page?’ (Chakkaradeep)
Building ‘easy’ and ‘complex’ user controls or field controls is one of those daily jobs that a SharePoint developer will do when building WCM websites. Recently whenever I was navigating from the Edit Mode, whether it may be a postback or clicking on a link to a different page, IE8 prompts with this ‘wonderful’ yet ‘awesome’ message:

SharePoint Date Filter: Filtering a List by Greater Than or Equal to Date (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
So, I was doing some playing around with mashups in SharePoint.  I was seeing what I could do to create pages a little more useful than you get using vanilla SharePoint without having to crack open Visual Studio.  One of the things I wanted to do was display a SharePoint list on the screen and add a filter to the screen that would allow a user to filter the list with a date field value greater than or equal to whatever a user entered.  Sounds simple right?  Should be easy? Well, I dropped my SharePoint list on a page, dropped a Date Filter on the page (this is an Enterprise feature by the way), connected the filter to the list and… I simply could not find a way to make the filter work as anything but a “Date equal to” filter.  That’s not really very useful for most real world applications right?

The Practice of Dialogue Mapping – Part 2 (Clever Workarounds)
Welcome to part 2 of a series of articles on the craft of Dialogue Mapping – something that forms a significant chunk of my SharePoint and non SharePoint work. In the “One best practice” series of articles, I explained IBIS. In part 1 of this series, I introduced the facilitation part that goes along with IBIS. In this article, I’ll spend more time on how Dialogue Mapping works in real world scenarios.

Most Common Issue with SharePoint Installations – Service Account Misuse (Michael O'Donovan's SharePoint and Stuff)
It is frightening to see how many SharePoint installations have been installed with wrong service accounts. Either people are using the default domain administrator or local machine administrator for all service accounts, or they are creating a single service account for everything and in many cases giving it WAY too many rights. SharePoint 2007 has been out for a fair amount of time and people are still getting this massively wrong. We can dissect later why that is, but for now I wanted to give my quick overview on what I suggest for service accounts in SharePoint 2007.

Join us as we talk with Eric Harlan to discuss how and why a company might want to block as well as embrace popular social networking sites and features, and how these can be incorporated or replicated within SharePoint.
