Google Goes After SharePoint with New Sites API
Given the amount of data that sit in SharePoint worldwide, given how eager Google seems to be about enterprise apps these days, and given the size of Google's appetite for data, we must say…it's about time.  With the introduction of Google's new Sites API — and some tools that explicitly pull stuff out of SharePoint and place it into Google Sites — the real heat between Redmond and Mountain View is finally starting to build.

Office 2010: Is It Worth an Upgrade?
It was clear that, with the release of Office 2007, Microsoft focused on collaboration with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. The Office 2010 Suite follows that same path, boasting improvements in integration with SharePoint Services and Windows Live. There's also the promise of Office Web Apps (not including Access), an online version of the suite that could potentially give Google Apps a bit of healthy competition. Users will now be able to access their files anywhere there's an Internet connection, save files directly to SharePoint and collaborate and edit documents simultaneously with other users. Microsoft also promises compatibility with a variety of browsers, including Firefox and Safari.

Windows 7 Could Be Making An Early Debut
PC aficionados who've been counting the minutes until Microsoft launches Windows 7 may be able to satiate their hunger earlier than expected, as some system builders may benefit from Microsoft's liberal estimate of how long it will take Windows 7 to make its way through the supply chain.  Seattle-based system builder Puget Systems, in a Friday statement posted to its Web site, said customers that place orders now will be placed in a queue for shipment and will begin receiving fully configured and tested Windows 7 PCs as early as October 13.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on "Moving The Needle"
Last week we showed the highlights and 10+ minutes of video footage of an exclusive hour-long TechCrunch interview with Microsoft CEO  Steve Ballmer. Now for the rest of that interview. The video was just a teaser. I spoke with Ballmer for another 50 minutes on the record, doing a deeper dive into five key areas of Microsoft's product strategy: Big Opportunities, Operating Systems/Browsers, Mobile, Search and Developers.

Microsoft launches new pre-Windows 7 anti-Linux Offensive
Microsoft has confirmed it developed materials that portray Linux as unsuitable for consumer use, and distributed these to retail sales staff around the United States. Among its claims the sales materials asserts that Windows scores a “many” for compatibility with cameras, iPod and MP3 players, as well as for printers and scanners. Linux is rated as “few.” The brochure scores Windows as having “extensive” software compatibility and Linux as being “limited.”

Microsoft's new Windows 7 ads try to be cool
There are those who believe Windows 7 doesn't need selling. As long as reviewers continue to suggest that it is a fine, fine thing, then people will gravitate towards it as they buy their (much cheaper than Mac) PCs. Microsoft is, however, taking no chances. It has released nine new ads designed for you to not be ashamed of being seen in public using the new operating system.

With over 1,000 Internet sites running on SharePoint listed on my site, I have been looking at ways to better present the list of sites. One scenario is to show similar sites based on the country and industry classification of the current site being viewed.

Comparing myself to Uncle Bob Martin
Before last week, I attended Roy Osherove’s TDD Masterclass,  I do not think I would have had the “you know what’s” to be able to put up an alternative solution to one of Uncle Bobs (aka Robert Martin) examples of doing Test Driven Development,  but here I am publishing the the solution I arrived at and suggesting that my solution better servers the values of Readability, Maintainability and trustworthiness.

 SharePoint – Meeting Workspace Scenarios
I've been asked to put together some SharePoint 'Meeting Initiation' scenarios, so here they are, presented as 'business requirements' and the techniques necessary to get rolling. Once you have created a meeting workspace, keep in mind that they are full, SharePoint sites that you can tune, customize and leverage for as long as you need. And they include a couple of additional (simple, you could of course create your own), SharePoint list templates to draw upon, to get your meeting going faster and smarter.

The practice of Dialogue Mapping – Part 4
Three weeks ago my plasma TV broke, freeing the family from the magic spell of hi-def television. My family took the loss in different ways. My four year old was devastated at the lack of Nintendo Wii, and constantly whined about being bored. My ten year old is a bookworm anyway, and continued to be one. I suddenly found mountains of time to write, churning out three Dialogue Mapping articles that I had been meaning to write for ages.

Develop SharePoint Presentation Materials: Part 05 (Video)
Creating a presentation that gets participants, especially online participants, emotionally involved is not usually given much through for technical presentations. If you’ve been following my series on developing SharePoint presentation materials, I think you’ll find this 5 minute video interesting as she talks about how her methodolgies apply to scientific and technical presentations. In the video, Nancy talks about the “Presentation Landscape”, thinking about presentations as residing in specific quadrants. Tomorrow, I’ll followup with her discussion of the difference between documents and presentations materials.

Globally Uncheck Selected Images in a SharePoint Picture Library (SharePoint Blank)
On occasion, I'm sent SharePoint questions which don't require any research on my part because I actually already know the answer.  Granted, this still doesn't happen often, but it has been known to happen.  At first blush, I thought the following question was going to be one of those: How can you uncheck your pictures without finding each one individually?

Microsoft Updates
Server name mappings are only updated on the initial crawl of a content source or when new documents are added to the index in SharePoint Server 2007 (Microsoft)
In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, server name mappings are only updated on the initial crawl of a content source or when new documents are added to the index. Therefore, you cannot change server name mappings without deleting and then re-crawling a content source, or without adding new documents to the index.
