Google Sites with API: Still No SharePoint Killer (CMS Watch)
Is Google Sites a SharePoint killer? Well, to be fair, I haven't heard the exact term this past week, but the innuendo was clearly there. Google's "Data Liberation Front" released an API for Sites, which allows you to get your data out of it; but also, to import data from another product. Say, SharePoint. And this has fed pundit's speculation (yet again) that this might be some serious competition for Microsoft.
Comparing Oranges to Oranges: Microsoft's Hosted Collaboration Suites vs. IBM's LotusLive iNotes (ZDNet)
IBM’s announcement of a new hosted entry-level communications offering has led to lots of punditry around how it compares to Google Apps. But I’m not sure that’s IBM’s main competition here. Google Apps Premier, which costs $50 per user per year, includes Web-based office applications (Google Docs), plus Gmail for businesses, Google Calendar, Google Sites and Postini hosted/archived email. IBM’s LotusLive iNotes includes hosted email, calendar and contact management service — but no hosted productivity apps — for $36 per user per year.
Microsoft Releases Beta Version of Identity Manager (Tech World)
Microsoft has shipped the second release candidate of Forefront Identity Manger 2010, which is a major piece of its strategy to integrate its security and identity technology. Forefront Identity Manager 2010, formerly called Identity Lifecycle Manager 2 (ILM), is Microsoft's platform for identity synchronisation, certificate and password management, and user provisioning. It has four areas of focus: policy, credential, user and group management.
Microsoft Wary as Security, Identity Integration Plan Lags (Good Gear Guide)
Microsoft is on the verge of finally providing some pieces of software to back up its ambitious plan to integrate its security and identity technologies, but the company admits it is moving slower than it had anticipated. "It is fair to say that getting this done in non-trivial," says Bob Muglia, president of Microsoft's server and tools business. "It is taking us perhaps a little longer in some areas then we would like, but we are pretty excited about the progress that we are seeing."
Microsoft Hopes Windows 7 Makes You Forget About Vista (Los Angeles Times)
Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows 7 computer operating system hopes to pull off a major trick with memory. Not computer memory, but ours. It's supposed to make us forget Vista. The Vista operating system, which Windows 7 will officially replace later this month, had a terrible reputation almost from the time it debuted in 2007.
Google Tries New Ploy to Challenge IE's Dominance (Computer World)
Google Inc. has taken a new tack in its effort to become a factor in the browser business long dominated by Microsoft Corp. Last month the company released a plug-in that embeds its Chrome browser into Microsoft's ubiquitous Internet Explorer, a move that could significantly boost its presence on corporate desktops and stick another thorn in the side of its much larger rival.
Full Flash on Your Phone by Next Year (Tech Radar)
On the eve of its MAX developer conference, Adobe announced that the next version of the Flash Player, 10.1, will run on smartphones as well as PC and Mac when it comes out in the first half of next year. This is the first time we'll get the same version of Flash on mobile and PC systems rather than the cut-down Flash Lite for phones, and it's the first time you'll be able to download Flash onto your phone yourself rather than having to hope the OS or handset has it bundled. And having Flash on mobiles is the first step towards having AIR apps running natively on phones.
Coming of Age in the Era of Cloud Computing (Dr. Dobb's)
Cloud computing is coming of age. It provides virtually unlimited computing resources in a wide variety of offerings. It offers new business models as to how to leverage, package, and access computing resources. An actual example illustrates some of the cloud's potential. Franz Inc, makers of advanced Semantic Web tools, wanted to test its software product across dozens of machines and databases. The problem was that Franz didn't have machines or the software and obtaining them was cost prohibitive -- in excess of $100,000 -- not to mention the delays in acquisition and configuration. However, the test was critical. It would demonstrate the product's value and provide a credible differentiation from the competition. What to do? Franz opted for a cloud solution, staging its service on Amazon's S3. The company ran its complex tests in a few days, and gained a wealth of insights and performance data to evaluate -- and at a cost of less than $200. For Franz, cloud computing changed the competitive analysis and understanding of performance in the large at a fraction of the cost and time.

That DAM SharePoint (Andy Dale SharePoint Blog)
Last month I went to a wedding at Breadsall Priory in Derby (yes, for those who read this weekly SharePoint Blog the one where I had the unfortunate hole appeared in my trousers). Now thousands of photographs are starting to appear of the happy event – luckily none of the hole in my trousers yet. Everybody seems to have taken photographs and videos of the couple on their big day and now all of these are appearing in various forms on Facebook, as well as being emailed around the globe. These days companies/organisations seem to have ever-increasing mounds of digital photographs. Without being able to reply on Facebook they a way of making these digital images generally available to their employees and customers.

Starting from Service Pack 2, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and SharePoint Server 2007 support Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2. When you try to install SharePoint bits on Windows Server 2008 R2 directly, you may see the following dialogue:
How to Map Word Quick Parts fields to a SharePoint Document Library Document Template (Brain Litter)
As a result of the Document Library Deep Dive presentation I did at the vSharePoint (Victoria SharePoint User's Group) on Thursday, the following question came up (how do you map SharePoint list data to a Word document, generated as a report). The query: http://www.meetup.com/vSharePoint/messages/boards/thread/7787717
SharePoint Web Content Management and Your Corporate Culture (Mastering SharePoint with Bob Mixon)
We, as technologists, love to use and work with the latest and greatest of technologies. I’ll be the first to say that I certainly enjoy playing with the latest and greatest toys. Though technologies such as Web Content Management (WCM) are by no means new, I still recognize it is new for most business cultures. I want to note that much of what I will cover in this article pertains specifically to Web Content Management (WCM). However, I am not picking on the technology; I love it and think it has a place when used correctly.
Extending Lookup Fields with “Add New Item” Option (Waldek Mastykarz)
How many times were you working with Lookup Fields and just when you were about to pick a value, you found out that it’s not there. How many clicks did you have to make to get to the Lookup List, add the new Lookup Item, get back to where you were first and add your item? While it sounds trivial, it’s the only way things can be done in out of the box SharePoint. You could of course create a whole new Custom Field Type which would contain an “Add new item” link, but there is an easier way to get this done.
2009-10-01 Today in SharePoint with Michael Gannotti (Recording) (End User SharePoint)
Michael Gannotti and I had our weekly conversation this morning and it ran about double our usual time, but I found it more than worth the extra few minutes. I am working with MetaVis Technologies at SharePoint Conference 2009 to coordinate over 100 live bloggers and project their live, streaming content onto a 100 inch display. In our conversation, Michael and I talk about the different technologies available for streaming content, the various encoding types available for providing media content over the web, and the pros/cons of available formats.
SharePoint 2010 for End Users (Veronique's SharePoint)
Everyone has heard about the new version, but as an average end user you probably would not have seen it yet or know much about it. It may also be a couple of years before your company decides to upgrade to the new version. So why should you care and what does this mean for you, especially when you are battling to get the current version under the belt? I’m probably the last person to write anything on the new version, but here’s my 5c worth.

Accidentally Deleted Images in a SharePoint Picture Library? (SharePoint Blank)
I ended my last post, how to globally uncheck images in a SharePoint picture library, with the unsettling confirmation that once an image has been edited, it remains checked by default in the library. This default behavior introduces the possibility of checked items being accidentally deleted, since one person may edit an image and another person (or, heck, even the same person on a different day, since checked images remain checked until/unless they are actively unchecked) may select a second image in the library and delete it. In such a case, they will have unknowingly also deleted the first image since clicking Delete in a picture library deletes all selected items in the library.
Operation ShareLove - Support Victims of Typhoon Ketsana (The Bamboo Team Blog)
One of the most amazing things about SharePoint is that there genuinely is a real community of people in this space who care about one another and the world around us. I tend to credit people like Lawrence Liu and Joel Oleson for helping to establish this ecosystem, and of course there is a cast of thousands who sustain it and keep it going. Names like Michael Gannotti, Mark Miller, Arno Nel and Bill English also leap to mind as good citizens of the community who lead by example. As a group, the SharePoint MVPs deserve enormous credit for creating and sustaining this network of people who truly care about one another. Sometimes I think we're just a bunch of nerds. Other times, I dare to think that yes, there is a movement of individuals and organizations that have rallied around a piece of software that helps people collaborate and make the world a better place. Not only are we doing something important and valuable for the world, but in our precious spare time, we often make time to look for other ways to improve the world around us.
