Don't be Caught Without a SharePoint Recovery Solution (InfoWorld)
SharePoint is being deployed in more organizations each year. In fact, it has become for many companies a mission-critical solution because it provides such capabilities as wiki, blog, document library, photo gallery, and more, thus comprising a collaboration hot spot. The amount of SharePoint data grows incredibly fast because additions come not from a single person but rather, from members of your workgroups. Announcements, links, documents, tasks -- they stream into the server from everyone in the organization with contribution permissions. Like Public Folders for Exchange, SharePoint has become a dumping ground for all sorts of content. And it must be protected.

Lower Cost Alternative to Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint Aimed at Education, Public Sector, SMBs (PRLog)
Open-Xchange, the leading provider of open source groupware, announced the availability of Open-Xchange Server Edition for Univention Corporate Server (OX SE for UCS) as a lower cost alternative to Microsoft Windows Server, Exchange and SharePoint for educational institutions, public administrations and small- and medium-size businesses.

Europe and Microsoft Seen Near Antitrust Deal (The New York Times)
Recent concessions by Microsoft, including its offer to give European computer users a choice of Web browsers, appear to address European Union antitrust concerns and cases against the company could be settled this year, the bloc’s competition commissioner said Wednesday. At a briefing in Brussels, the commissioner, Neelie Kroes, said that she has “good grounds for thinking we are moving towards a very satisfactory resolution” of the case concerning the way Microsoft bundles its Explorer Web browser with its Windows operating system.

Wikis, Blogs, Collaborative Document Management - and Twitter Drive Enterprise Web 2.0 Adoption (CIO)
Findings from independent IT industry analyst research firm, Hydrasight, confirm that a growing number of organisations in the Asia Pacific region have already adopted enterprise web 2.0-based solutions. Almost a third of respondents to the online survey conducted in September 2009 indicated they already have enterprise web 2.0 implementations in place.

Amazon's Three Steps To Cloud Computing (Information Week)
Amazon CTO Werner Vogels is preparing a paper that summarizes his views on how large companies can adopt cloud services. Here's a sneak peek at his soon-to-be-published report. I got a chance to talk to Werner at the InformationWeek 500 conference a few weeks ago in Data Point, Calif. The topic of our hour-long conversation, in front of a live audience, was "Can The Cloud Scale For The Enterprise?" You can view the full video, which covers a lot of ground, below.

Google’s Cloud Rains on Amazon’s Future (The Register)
Amazon may rule the public cloud today, but more developers have faith in Google's prospects going into the future, according to new research. Evans Data released a report on Tuesday measuring how software developers perceive web-based computing providers like Amazon, Microsoft, AT&T, Google, Rackspace and Hewlett-Packard. More than 400 developers were asked to rate the companies based on criteria such as current capabilities, ability to execute on their vision, scalability and security.

Microsoft Launches Windows Mobile 6.5 For Smarter Phones (ITProPortal)
Microsoft today officially launched the latest iteration of its Windows Mobile operating system, christening it as Windows 6.5 for phones, promising to deliver a new customer experience. Tips When Asking For SharePoint Help (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
One of the cool things about not being a total moron in SharePoint anymore is that I actually have the ability to help people. I’m always happy to lend a hand when I can, and it’s actually a great way for me to learn even more.  However, sometimes it can be hard for me to give the proper advice/help because I don’t exactly know what a person is asking.  There are so many different parameters that can affect any advice you get in SharePoint and it’s really hard for someone to be in your head.  Sometimes it can take several back and forth emails just to fully understand the question being asked.  So, I thought I’d type up a quick blog which will help you ask your questions more succinctly and make sure you get the best advice/help possible (not necessarily from me).

Filtering a SharePoint Data View – Part 1 (End User SharePoint)
This comes up in the forums from time to time and I have been asked by students and clients how to do this. I have seen it on videos but will simply list the steps here for anyone who needs to easily create a filtered view of a grid of data. This post will show how to set up the ASP.Net drop down using a SharePoint list as its data source.

Restoring a SharePoint Site Collection to a New Domain (red1'space)
I recently had to do this for a client, namely MTN in Zambia; who was having serious problems with WSS search and after a few trials and tribulations with STSADM I was able to get it up and running on my test virtual machine in a matter of minutes. Obviously my test VM isn’t on the client’s domain nor does it share and SIDs with the original hosting environment.

Intermittent Database Server Connectivity and Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies (Bill Baer)
Intermittent connectivity to a database server hosting Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies databases can occur for a number of reasons.  In some cases it may be related to a simple database connection timeout configuration setting in Windows SharePoint Services or in other cases it may be one or more operating system and/or hardware configurations.  In this post we’ll examine several options and configuration settings that can be adjusted to help isolate or mitigate such occurrences.

Announcing The SharePoint Video Library: Your Media Strikes it Rich (The Bamboo Team Blog)
When you want to store files in SharePoint, you use a Library. There are Document Libraries for documents, Form Libraries for forms, Picture Libraries for ... well, you get the .. er..  idea. But, what do you do when you want to store "rich" media, like video, or even audio? Out-of-the-box, SharePoint just isn't equipped to handle it. Sure, you can store your files in a document library, but they'll be treated like any other generic file type. No thumbnails, no special metadata, and definitely no playback. If pictures deserve their own library in SharePoint, shouldn't videos get one too?.
