Microsoft Tries to Quell European Complaints (The New York Times)
European antitrust regulators said Wednesday that they had tentatively accepted Microsoft’s concessions to settle two antitrust cases, which the company said left both organizations free to focus on the next generation of technology giants, including Google.
Office Suites in the Cloud: Microsoft Office Web Apps Versus Google Docs and Zoho (InfoWorld)
A spreadsheet in your browser? A word processor on the Web? These days, SaaS (software as a service) is all the rage, and the success of Web-based upstarts like Salesforce.com has sent vendors searching for ever more categories of software to bring online. If you believe Google, virtually all software will be Web-based soon -- and as if to prove it, Google now offers a complete suite of office productivity applications that run in your browser.
Windows 7 Impact on PC Sales Will 'Not Be Huge,' Says Microsoft's Ballmer (eWeek)
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer suggested during a Munich press conference that any surge in PC sales around the launch of Windows 7 will "probably not be huge." The statement reflects some of Ballmer’s more cautiously optimistic comments about the IT economy and Microsoft’s near-term prospects within it, although the CEO has also suggested that an industry-wide tech refresh is eventually inevitable.
128-Bit Support in Windows 8, 9? (OS News)
Microsoft has been thinking about Windows 8 for a while now even through the production of Windows 7. Some information has been gathered by our friends over at Ars, and all of this said information points to possible 128-bit versions of Windows 8 and definite 128-bit versions of Windows 9. Update: Other technophiles better-versed than I in this whole 64/128-bit business pointed out that it must be for the filesystem (such as ZFS described in this article) rather than the processor and memory scheme.
Microsoft Content with Windows Mobile Launch (Computerworld)
Not only was there a negative initial reaction to the launch of the latest Windows phones on Wednesday, there were news stories about all the bad reviews. Yet, Microsoft didn't seem to notice. When asked for a reaction about the negative reports (Techcrunch had possibly the most memorable headline: "Windows Mobile 6.5 Review: It Still Sucks"), Andy Lees, senior vice president of mobile communications at Microsoft, disagreed that the market response was overly negative. "You always get a spectrum of coverage," he said during an interview on Wednesday.
DISA Opens DOD Cloud (Cloud Computing Journal)
The Defense Information Service Agency (DISA), US combat support agency, has opened phase two of its infrastructure-as-a-service cloud to Defense Department customers and users. The so-called Rapid Access Computing Environment (RACE) widgetry will now let them provision operating environments in the highly secured Defense Enterprise Computing Center’s (DECC) production environment.
Steve Ballmer: The Future Belongs to Microsoft (Times Online)
Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft, and one of the richest businessmen in the world, punches the air with both arms and starts to bellow. “Come on! These are going to be fun, fun years! I think about the next generation of what people are going to be doing in their homes. This is going to be the best three years for users in their home – of all time.”
Microsoft and Google: The Good Guys (PC Magazine)
Do you like competition? If so, it's time to line up behind Microsoft and Google. Seriously. At the CTIA Wireless IT trade show this week, it's clear that these two mega-corps are enabling many more players to compete in the world of smartphones than just themselves. Smartphones are a hot spot in a frigid technology market, and the hottest smartphones in the U.S. right now are the ones where a single company controls the entire experience. Take the Apple iPhone, Palm Pre and BlackBerrys, for example.

Estimating Content Database Transaction Log Growth Rate - With PowerShell V2 (From The Field)
You might argue once you’re finished reading this post that it belongs more in a SQL-focused blog rather than a SharePoint one; however it was SharePoint that brought it about, so I thought there might be other SharePoint administrators out there who will find it useful…
My Favorite SharePoint 2007 Development Techniques (with an eye on SP2010) (Chris O'Brien's blog)
As we home in on the release of SharePoint 2010, I wanted to write down a couple of thoughts for posterity on SharePoint 2007 development, mainly for my benefit. One of the reasons for doing this is because I’ve been working with the SP2010/VS2010 Tech Previews recently, and whilst I’ve not done a full “compare and contrast” exercise, I can certainly see that in the future I will want to reference back to how I liked to handle something in the SharePoint 2007 world, and more importantly, why. My experience is that transitioning to a new platform brings on a certain amnesia, where for some reason it’s difficult to remember just how the equivalent thing worked in the last version (CMS2002 anyone?) – undoubtedly we need to avoid restricting our thinking with irrelevant practices and constraints, but sometimes the old way is definitely useful as a reference point.
How to get rid of SharePoint 10016 DCOM IISWAMReg Local Activation Issues (Brain Litter)
This comes up all the time and while I've blogged it before, I've never created a video of the fix. So if you are getting those Pesky 10016 Event ID's in your System Event Logs on your SharePoint Servers, here's how you resolve them (this video demonstrates in Windows Server 2008).
InfoPath Fails After Applying SP (All About SharePoint – S.S. Ahmed – MVP Microsoft SharePoint)
Service packs fix lots of issues in the installations but sometimes they also create problems. It becomes a pain to track down the source of the problem if you have a huge setup. A user yesterday reported the following problem after he applied SP2 on the server running InfoPath:
Useful Delegate Controls in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (Wictor Wilén)
Delegate Controls in SharePoint is a blessing when you are customizing the features and interface of SharePoint. The Delegate Controls are areas in the out-of-the-box SharePoint pages where you are allowed to inject your own controls. This is heavily used by Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, which essentially is a set of features on top of Windows SharePoint Services. For example the standard WSS user information page redirects to the MOSS My Site, this redirection is done by inserting a delegate control into a specific delegate control on the userdisp.aspx page. This nifty delegate control can be used in a WSS solution when you want to create a custom profile page, without modifying any of the OOB files and easily reverts to its original state when you deactivate the feature.
