Microsoft Cuts Prices for Online Exchange, SharePoint Versions (TechFlash)
Microsoft said today that its cutting the price of SharePoint Online, Exchange Online and other programs in its Business Productivity Online Suite -- versions of its server programs that it hosts for customers for monthly subscription fees, as an alternative to traditional versions run from customers' own servers.
SharePoint 2010's Sandboxed Solutions (SharePoint Pro Connections)
One of the biggest problems with SharePoint 2007 development is that all of its solutions run as full trust. This makes farm administrators reluctant to publish any solution that may disrupt the stability of the farm. Sandboxed solutions, new in SharePoint 2010, address this by allowing site collection administrators to deploy solutions that are safe to run.
Where’s my SSP!? Introducing the SharePoint Services Architecture (Corey Roth - DotNetMafia.com)
Shared Services Provider. Gone! The concept of the SSP is no more. It has been replaced with a new concept called the Services Architecture. Your SharePoint installation will not have a separate SSP site like you had in the past. You now manage all of your familiar services like Search, the BDC, Excel Services directly through Central Administration on the new Manage Service Application page. This is where you will go to find familiar screens like Search Administration, User Profiles, and the Business Data Catalog (now BCS). The trick to getting to them, click on the item in the list and then use the Manage button on the toolbar.
Microsoft Questions Google Apps' Momentum, Touts 1M Online Business Suite Customers (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft Corp. is slashing the price of its Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) by a third as it debuts the service in 15 new countries. A Microsoft executive also touted BPOS' momentum, while questioning figures trumpeted by Google for its rival Google Apps suite. BPOS, which includes Web-hosted versions of Microsoft's Exchange e-mail, SharePoint collaboration, and other Office communication-related apps, now costs $10 per user per month, down from $15 per user per month. Microsoft also expanded the hosted storage limit to 25 GB per user, from the prior 10 GB.
Is Microsoft a Dinosaur to Google's Mammal? (ZDNet)
I had a couple of very enlightening conversations with representatives from Microsoft and Google back-to-back on Friday. While our conversations were focused on their educational initiatives, some of which I’ll be featuring tomorrow on ZDNet Education, the more interesting aspects of the interviews actually related to their entirely different approaches to the Web, the cloud, and computing in general. These approaches, and the history behind them, beg the question, is it time for Microsoft to reinvent itself if it wants to avoid becoming the computing equivalent of fossil fuels?
Updating Office on the Cheap (The Wall Street Journal)
When Microsoft Corp. releases a new version of Office next year, the company will go all out to convince businesses to upgrade its popular suite of workplace programs—this time, to get new features that connect the software more deeply to the Web. But Office 2010 faces a hostile climate. A shaky economy is making companies look hard at big software purchases. Archrival Google Inc. also is pushing businesses to use its low-cost suite of applications that run inside Web browsers.
Yahoo! Open Sources Uber Web Server (The Register)
Yahoo! has open sourced the back-end software platform that underpins the company's webmail client and countless other applications offered up across its sweeping web portal. Known as Traffic Server, the platform handles general edge caching, edge processing, and load balancing at Yahoo!, but it's also used to manage traffic on the company's internal storage and server-virtualization services.

Managing Metadata in SharePoint 2010 (iLove SharePoint)
SharePoint 2010 comes with a bunch of web 2.0 features, tags, tag clouds, rating, social bookmarking and enhanced blogs and wikis. What I really missed in SharePoint 2007 was tags and tag clouds. On the other hand this was a free space for developers like me, see Power Tag Cloud ;-) My experience with SharePoint 2003 already showed that text, dropdowns and lookup columns are too inflexible and people tend to over categorize in the conception stage.
SharePoint Foundation 2010: What’s in a Name (and New!) (sharepoint developer resources)
For all you out there wondering what SharePoint Foundation 2010 means, it’s the new name for Windows SharePoint Services. But now we are talking about SharePoint Foundation 2010, what is new?
Does this SQL Server Host a SharePoint Farm? (From The Field)
I recently responded to a thread on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com) offering to describe a method of detecting whether a SQL server hosts a SharePoint farm. Several folks followed up asking for a blog on how to do this so here goes. Note: This is the same for 2007 and for 2010.
Ready to Upgrade Your SharePoint 2007 Branding to SharePoint 2010? (Randy Drisgill)
Maybe, not quite yet… you are probably still waiting for the public beta to release… but when it does, this will probably be one of the first things you want to look at. While the Visual Upgrade feature in 2010 is going to be a nice way to temporarily see your upgraded site with your old branding, this mode is only meant to be used briefly while you learn how to actually convert the master page and other branding assets to 2010. Thankfully, there is an early release article on the MSDN that covers this process, check out:
