Microsoft's Live@edu to Add SharePoint (NetworkWorld)
Microsoft Wednesday said it will add SharePoint Online services to its Live@edu program that provides free e-mail and other collaboration tools to schools and universities. In addition, Microsoft said in the past four months the Live@edu service has added 5,000 new schools, which has raised number of users of the service into the tens of millions. The announcements were made at the annual Educause conference, which focuses on technology in education.

Microsoft Optimistic About Rapid Windows 7 Migration (Network Computing)
Microsoft launched its new operating system on October 22 but many of its customers were already testing it in live environments months before the launch date. However, the fact remains that more than 70 percent of customers still use Windows XP. Many Vista users downgraded to XP. Windows XP and Vista users are thrilled with the robustness, security and features of Windows 7, but the usual practice is to wait for Service Pack 1. Microsoft Cuts Another 800 Jobs (The Wall Street Journal)
Microsoft Corp. announced 800 layoffs Wednesday, expanding the scale of a cost-reduction program it announced at the beginning of the year. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft said in January that it planned to eliminate 5,000 jobs by 2010 but has now expanded the program by 800 jobs, a spokesman said. The most recent cuts are expected to bring to a close the first major round of layoffs in the company's 34-year history.
Microsoft CEO Eyes Yahoo Partnership Outside U.S. (Reuters)
Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Thursday the company could look to extend its search engine partnership with Yahoo outside the United States, if it gets regulatory approval. Earlier this year Microsoft and Yahoo signed a 10-year Web search partnership to challenge Google Inc, a pact that U.S. and European antitrust regulators are evaluating.

The problem here is that authors are usually not allow to start timer jobs. To overcome this limitation it is required to store the information about which items have to be quick deployed at a place where a normal author of the site collection has write permission. And this is a list inside the source site collection. The quick deploy job that performs the actual deployment has to read the information about the items to be quick deployed from this list when it runs.

SharePoint Workspace 2010 & the Offline Experience (SharePoint 2010)
Donna Shaw and Paul Cannon presented the session on the integration of SharePoint Workspace (formerly known as Groove) with the 2010 offering. Not surprisingly, it was announced that integration with SharePoint was the major investment with this release, and SharePoint Workspace was described as being "the desktop model of the SharePoint server." Donna also stated that, "if you're comfortable working in a SharePoint site, you should be comfortable working in a Workspace."
