Is the SharePoint Bubble Going to Burst? (CMS Watch)
My colleagues Tony Byrne and Shawn Shell (the lead analysts for our SharePoint Research ) recently reported on the hysteria generated around product announcements for SharePoint 2010 earlier this month in Las Vegas. As subscribers who received our latest SharePoint advisory paper know, there is plenty to be excited about in SP2010, especially if you belong to the SharePoint channel of resellers, consultants, developers, and system integrators. But over the past few weeks I have been noticing something of a shadow side to this excitement.

Microsoft Shutters Office 2010 Preview, Preps Public Beta (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft may launch the public beta of Office 2010 as early as next week, according to e-mail messages received Tuesday by people who have been testing the company's next application suite. Last month, CEO Steve Ballmer promised that his company would roll out a beta during November. Microsoft has said it will distribute millions of copies of the Office 2010 public beta.

Gartner: Cloud Computing Revenue to Grow 18% this Year (Seattle Post Intelligencer)
Revenue from cloud-computing services could reach $7.5 billion in 2009, an 18 percent jump from last year's revenue of $6.4 billion, according to research firm Gartner.
By the end of 2013, revenue from cloud computing could nearly double to $14 billion, the firm said. Cloud computing is also known as Software as a Service (SaaS).

Windows 7 May be Secure, but are Windows Users Safe? (PC World)
Windows 7 users got a nice surprise on Tuesday when Microsoft released its first set of security patches since unveiling the new operating system last month. Of the 15 bugs patched, none affected Windows 7. When Microsoft launched Windows 7, it was billed as the company's most secure release ever -- the culmination of a nine-year "Trustworthy Computing" effort to shore up a product line that had been riddled with major security holes.

Did Microsoft Copy Mac OS for Windows 7? Yes ... Uh, Wait ... No ... (ZDNet)
Yesterday there appeared an interview with a Microsoft group manager who claimed that Microsoft copied the “Mac look and feel in terms of graphics” in Windows 7. This was later denied by Microsoft’s communications manager. So, which is it? The row erupted over comments made by Microsoft’s partner group manager, Simon Aldous to PCR. In response to the question “Is Windows 7 really a much more agile operating system, in terms of the specific uses it can be moulded to?” Aldous said:

Confusion Mars Cloud Computing Adoption (CIOL)
The term "cloud computing" brings a host of definitions and perceptions that may, in fact, stall enterprise adoption of cloud computing technologies. This is according to an August 2009 survey of more than 200 information technology (IT) professionals by Proofpoint Inc., a provider of SaaS email security, email archiving and data loss prevention solutions, and Osterman Research.

SharePoint as a Feature Rich and Beautiful Website (SharePoint in Education)
One of the projects our development team have been working on at Twynham School is the build of a new website. As you will know we love using SharePoint for everything and it is no surprise that we have been building Internet facing websites in SharePoint. We have already built our main site in SharePoint last year but as our development team of Chris Mckinley, Darren White and Rob Brown develop significant skills in SharePoint we wanted to push what we could do.

Redirecting HTTP Traffic to HTTPS in SharePoint (AskSharePoint.com)
Recently, we deployed a large project for a multinational corporation and an interesting situation arose during the process.  The SharePoint portal for this particular client was accessible externally (outside of their corporate network).  This allowed users to access the sites worldwide without having to use a VPN to connect to the corporate network.  This is not uncommon in the SharePoint world, and we have implemented and configured a fair number of Extranet portals over the years.

Kill Database Connections to SharePoint (SharePoint Comic)
There will be occasions where you need to work with the databases for SharePoint in SQL Server Management Studio.  Backups, restores, etc... If you run into problems with there being existing connections to the databases preventing you from performing maintenance items, here’s a way to kill those database connections.

A jQuery Library for SharePoint Web Services (WSS 3.0 and MOSS): the SPDisplayRelatedInfo Function (Marc D Anderson's Blog)
SPDisplayRelatedInfo is a function in the jQuery Library for SharePoint Web Services that lets you display information which is related to the selection in a dropdown. This can really bring your forms to life for users: rather than just selecting bland text values, you can show them images and links that are related to their choices.

Can Google Wave Become a Disruptive, Good Enough BPMS? (Action Blog)
I have been wondering about whether there something akin to good enough BPM when it comes to people oriented process (which are most processes in organizations). It seems to me that for these types of processes a full-fledged BPMS implementation is overkill. Not just the upfront purchase cost, but all the upfront process discovery, modeling and implementation resources needed for a BPM implementation. When all is said and done even a simple BPM implementation can cost $200K-$500K in total cost of implementation.

Introduction to the Microsoft Office 2010 Web Apps (SharePoint 2010)
With this session, Nick Simmons, Nathan Penner, and Dan Parrish provided an introduction to the Office Web Apps for 2010.  Introductory remarks included the caveat that while the editing experience with the Web Apps isn't as rich as in their client-based equivalents, the preservation of the integrity of the original document is guaranteed.  Also noted was the fact that the Web Apps use the Ribbon just as do their client counterparts, and the recognition that these are 1.0 versions of the Web Apps, and that the "intent is to release more frequently" than the client counterparts.
