Virtualizing SharePoint (Law Technology News)
At Fenwick & West we recently virtualized our Microsoft SharePoint extranets to make better use of hardware, reduce costs, enhance manageability, and improve processes for disaster recovery. At times, this effort seemed akin to rebuilding a jetliner in midflight! In this article I'll discuss the benefits of virtualizing SharePoint, and chronicle the most significant challenges we encountered and overcame in the process of moving our complex extranet environment from physical to virtual servers. It's my hope that the information provided here will help others considering virtualizing SharePoint and realize successful outcomes as well.

2 Million Downloads and Counting: Why Such Loyalty for Microsoft Office? (Read Write Enterprise)
In the past seven weeks, more than 2 million people have downloaded the beta for Microsoft Office 2010. That's a whopping 40,000 downloads per day. It's a record breaking pace, surpassing the beta release for Microsoft Office 2007. It begs the question: In the face of so many free options, why are people so loyal to Microsoft Office?

Windows7 Success … More Proof (Windows 7 News)
Lack of gripping doesn’t make software a success…but since Vista did create a lot of gripping  from more than one channel, No Gripe is Good news for Windows 7 at least. So it should come as no surprise as was reported here yesterday “Windows 7 Fastest Selling Operating System In History Says Microsoft” that Windows7 has been a success story. Now Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, proclaimed at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2010, that Windows7 has close to 1 million applications supporting the Windows7 OS.

Microsoft Bing's Big Plan For 2010: Refinement (eWeek)
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has a sense of humor about himself. That's what I suspected after his Jan. 6 keynote at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), when Ballmer stood before the audience in a bright red sweater and announced: "We Bing, and we Bing, Bing, Bing all the time--at least in my world." I felt sure he was poking a little fun at his much-publicized proclivity for occasionally repeating the same word in sequence.

Windows Mobile 7 Damage Report: Mixed Assessments on the CES No-show (Beta News)
So what did you think of the Windows Mobile 7 sneak preview that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer slipped into his CES keynote last night? Oh. That's right. There wasn't one. In fact, in front of the biggest batch of consumer electronics geeks known to man, Ballmer barely mentioned Windows Mobile at all, other than to say that Microsoft would have a lot more to say next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. (Previously, Microsoft had said Windows Mobile 7 was likely to be announced during the MIX conference in mid-March.

Microsoft Rings in 2010 with Commercial Cloud Services (GCN)
Microsoft is starting the initial phase of commercializing its cloud-computing platform this month, as planned. The company announced on Monday that developers can now upgrade their Windows Azure preview accounts to commercial subscriptions or register for new services. Billing is slated to start in February.

Ford Triumphs with Touch, Sync; Brings Connectivity to Fourth Screen -- Your Dashboard (ZDnet)
What’s got an operating system, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, USB and SD card ports, two LCD touchscreens, touch-sensitive buttons, MapQuest turn-by-turn directions, support for Pandora and Twitter, app stores, an SDK and a direct feed into the cloud? No, it’s not the latest smartbook. It’s the next-generation of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, and they’re coming to show you what it’s like to tether a V6 engine to your laptop or phone.

Office 2010: Accessibility Investments & Document Accessibility (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
My name is Larry Waldman -- I am a Program Manager on the Office User Experience team and have been working in this role to make Office more accessible for almost 5 years. When users of Office hear that Microsoft has many people working specifically to make our products more accessible to people with disabilities, many express surprise. With such a broad customer base, we recognize the importance of considering accessibility impact in every feature we build. For example, check out this article I wrote about Accessibility and the Ribbon in Office 2007.

Reinstalling SharePoint without Reinstalling SharePoint (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
This blog post is the heartwarming tale of two warring factions putting their differences aside and working together for a common good. That's right, devs and admins, hand in hand, figuring out this beast we both love called SharePoint.

Creating a SharePoint 2010 Ribbon Extension - Part 1 (Wictor Wilén)
SharePoint 2010 contains numerous of improvements in the user interface and it has been built to be able to be extended. I guess that all of you have seen the Ribbon in SharePoint 2010 by now and probably even tried to add a button and fire away a Hello World JavaScript alert (it’s one of the HOLs available also). That’s quite an easy task. But doing some more advanced contextual and dynamic customizations to the Ribbon really makes you sweat!

SharePoint 2010 and VS2010 Development Trick – Shortcut Key the Deploy (blah!bLaH!BLOG!!)
I like VS2010 tools for SharePoint 2010. But the one thing I find annoying is that while I can build using CTRL_SHIFT_B, and the intended approach of the tools was to hit F5 to deploy, the reality is that I don’t want to attach to the browser in most instances. Popping up the browser, attaching, just takes too long.

How to Create and Populate a SharePoint Tasks List (SharePoint Blank)
I received a question via email earlier this week regarding advanced task list functionality and, while setting up a test task list to work with in the course of researching the answer, it occurred to me that I've never blogged the creation and population of a tasks list.  So, before I get to that advanced question (and ultimately its answer), I thought that it would be useful to take a step back and walk through the creation of a SharePoint tasks list.
