Windows 7 Does Not Ruin Batteries; Google vs. Microsoft Marketing; Obama Suggests Agencies Use Cloud to Cut Costs

Top News Stories Microsoft Dropping Linux, Unix From Enterprise Search (InformationWeek) Microsoft is dropping its Linux and Unix search cores in the Fast Search and Transfer enterprise search products it has been providing since it acquired FAST two years ago. The announcement was made by FAST chief technology officer Bjorn Olstad in his blog. Olstad said FAST's next wave of products with Windows capability -- scheduled for release in a few months -- will be the last to include a search core that operates on Linux and Unix.
Users Dispute Microsoft's Explanation of Windows 7 Battery Problems (ComputerWorld) Windows 7 does not ruin notebook batteries or issue premature warnings that the power is exhausted, Microsoft's head of Windows said Monday in response to customer complaints. Within minutes, Windows 7 users who have experienced those problems disagreed, calling the explanation "hand washing" and noting that if the company's conclusion was correct, then many affected users must be "under some sort of bizarre bad battery curse."
Google vs. Microsoft Marketing (CNET) Google gets it. Microsoft does not. There are many reasons to take this position, but the two companies' outdoor advertising in London is enough for me. Google's ads focus on real people doing real things with the company's technology. Microsoft's...well, I'm not really sure what Microsoft's ads are supposed to do other than make people feel like they somehow are responsible for Windows.
Windows 7 Tops 10 Percent Market Share (Yahoo! Tech) It's official: Windows 7 doesn't suck. At least, that's what the marketplace says so far. In the space of barely three months, Windows 7 has just about hit double-digit market share percentages. The official numbers are constantly being refined and adjusted by a few tenths of a percentage point here and there, but NetMarketShare, which tracks operating systems in use among web browser users, pegs yesterday's Windows 7 market share at 9.78%, which I'll go ahead and give to Microsoft as a full 10.
Microsoft: Should They Do A Giant Handset Acquisition? (Barron's) Should Microsoft be doing a giant deal in the mobile phone sector? As Kara Swisher of AllThingsD notes today, the software giant is expected to unveil the latest version of its handset OS - Windows Mobile 7 - at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But she wonders whether the company might be better off making a giant landscape-changing acquisition to jump-start its position in the sector. Palm, for instance. Or Research In Motion. Or even - why not think big! - Nokia.
Obama's 2011 Budget Suggests Agencies Use Cloud to Cut Costs (IT Business Edge) I'll be honest. When I wrote about last month's summit conference that brought together federal government officials and executives from technology-savvy firms like Southwest Airlines, I wondered if anything would come of it. The idea was for the private companies to impart some of their hard-won technology wisdom in hopes of making government agencies more efficient and responsive to constituents' needs. I wrote:
Around the Blogosphere What’s New for Developers in Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010? (Adventures in Office, SharePoint &.NET Development) The upcoming release of Office and SharePoint offers a wealth of interesting new scenarios and solutions that can be built thanks to new features and improvements added to different Office and SharePoint products and technologies. There’s more possibilities to integrate Office and SharePoint to build rich client-server solutions using tools such as Visual Studio 2010, SharePoint Designer 2010, InfoPath 2010, and Access 2010.
Cleaning Up Your SubText Database (Andrew Connell) I use the open source project SubText to power my blog and have been for years. For me, it works great. However there’s one little dirty secret about it: it logs every single inbound URL request for trackbacks & pingbacks… just like most blog software does. All of this gets logged to two tables: subtext_Referrals & subtext_URLs. After a while, these guys can fill up to be quite big… specifically the URLs table.
Managing SharePoint 2007 Site Permission: Video Download (End User SharePoint) Sharon Richardson of JoiningDots.net delivered a lively EUSP Live Online session this morning on Managing SharePoint 2007 Site Permissions. If you weren’t able to attend the session, we are making it available for download as a live meeting presentation. Download the package and expand it on your local harddrive for viewing.
BDC Picker Empty… Why? (sharepoint developer resources) Last week I had to do some maintenance for a customer. During this maintenance we had serious trouble with the bdc-definition. We started out because the customer had serious performance issues. We decide to change 2 things, just for the test. One of them was > recreate the Shared Service Provider.
Around Bamboo Nation As SPTechCon Beckons, Operation ShareLove: Haiti Prepares to Raffle Over $40K in SharePoint Prizes (Bamboo Team Blog) I've been very much looking forward to my Wednesday afternoon flight out of the snowpocalyptic landscape that D.C. has become for the warmer climes of San Francisco to attend my first SPTechCon. Guess what? They're now calling for up to another foot of snow between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, so I just got off the phone with an excellent United customer service representative who helpfully arranged to move my flight up to Tuesday afternoon, even generously waiving the standard change fees due to the oncoming storm.
