Winter Olympics: A Showroom for Bing, Office, SharePoint (Seattle PI)
It's Olympics time again, which means it's time for the media and corporate frenzy that always goes along with the Games. And to this aspect, Microsoft is no stranger. As I reported in November, Microsoft is behind the scenes of NBC's online video coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. As it they did for the Beijing Games in 2008, NBColympics.com's video browser and player run on Silverlight, Microsoft's competitor to the ubiquitous Adobe Flash.

There's a huge mobile market out there and Box wants them to know they are adding tools to support them. They've released a set of collaboration tools for their mobile platform that lets you work when you want, from where you want.

Google Ultrafast Broadband May Shake Up Fiber Market (PCWorld)
Not content to merely challenge Internet carriers in the mobile phone world, Google is now challenging them in the fiber world as well. Google Wednesday announced on its blog that is constructing an experimental fiber network that the company says will "deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections."

Microsoft Readies Office Communicator 2010 Beta (ZDNet)
As I’ve blogged before, the next release of Microsoft’s Office Communications Server is in development, with a final release slated for the last calendar quarter of 2010. But it looks like testers are going to be able to get their hands on to see a demo (possibly ) of a beta of one component of the 2010 release — the Communicator enterprise instant-messaging client. — before the end of March.

Can Microsoft Catch Up by Giving Away Azure? (Intelligent Enterprise)
Microsoft Azure finally went into production amidst much fanfare. The long-awaited Azure platform is Microsoft's big bet in the cloud computing space, but can they catch up to AWS, Salesforce.com, Google, and other existing cloud players? That said, it is no coincidence that Microsoft is basically giving away Azure to deserving government scientists for three years in a program between Microsoft Corp. and the National Science Foundation.

Is it Time to Move Exchange to the Cloud? (InfoWorld)
I'm not comfortable personally with using the word "cloud" as a means of describing online IT resources. Microsoft refers to its hosted Exchange solution as "cloud services" and that term may fit a bit better. But its official offerings are coming under the heading "Microsoft Online Services" and its main bundled suite is called the Microsoft BPOS (Business Productivity Online Standard Suite). My first nod of approval goes to the fact that BPOS doesn't use the oft-used new buzzword "cloud" in its title. Granted, that isn't a technical commendation, just a nod. But BPOS impresses in not only its pricing (the starting price is $10 per user per month) but in the software cornucopia the suite provides.

Microsoft Reports Bug in Web Security Protocols (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft on Tuesday warned of a "vulnerability" associated with two protocols commonly used to establish secure client-server communications. The Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols have a bug that could affect several versions of Windows, including Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft explained in a security advisory. However, the advisory noted that Microsoft currently has not heard of "any attacks attempting to exploit the reported vulnerability."

Mobile World Congress 2010 Preview (CNET)
It seems just like yesterday that we unpacked our bags from Las Vegas and CES, but here we are again, gearing up to head off to Barcelona (I know, it's a rough life we lead) for Mobile World Congress 2010. The show is put on by the GSM Association (GSMA) and brings together handset manufacturers, mobile operators, software companies, and many more wireless industry experts from around the world where they can showcase their new products and services as well as discuss and learn about the latest mobile trends and technologies.

SharePoint Identity Crisis Part 2 (SharePoint Contender)
When we last left off we were contemplating where and who is this magic middle person: a project manager, the trainer, maybe a unit manager, perhaps a business analyst, or could it be a consultant? I firmly believe that this role does not really have a firm title in most organizations yet. That has to do in large part with the lack of understanding of the functions it would perform or it has so many functions that the job req resembles more a department’s description. But as “SharePoint as a Platform” resonates more and more into the business and IT consciousness this role’s name will grow along with all other projections of SharePoint growth.

Metadata Not Saving When Office Document is Password Protected (Sharepointology)
This is a known issue.  The metadata is actually stored within the document and gets read into SharePoint when being saved.  Unfortunately, since the document is password protected, SharePoint cannot read the metadata values and therefore you lose them. More precise, if you open the document for example in Excel you will see in your Document Information Panel (DIP) that the metadata is stored (in the document), but you won’t see the metadata in SharePoint.

Deploying Relational Lists Using CAML in SharePoint 2010 (XML Journal)
One of my favorite new features in SharePoint 2010 is the ability to have lists relate to each other and the fact that you can maintain referential integrity.  Now, I am sure there are at least 50 posts out there already that show you how to do this using the UI.  The UI is great, but you are a developer and that means you might want to actually deploy these lists elsewhere someday.  Now I have to admit, using the save site as template feature is great for moving sites and content around but you may want a more granular deployment of a pair of lists in a single feature.  The cool thing is the save site as template feature is extremely useful for discovering the underlying CAML to build things in SharePoint which is how I discovered relational lists work today.  This post has some great screenshots of how to export a site template as a wsp.

SPTechCon Kicks Off with Introductory Workshops and a Busy Exhibit Hall (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Wednesday was the pre-conference workshop at SPTechCon in San Francisco, featuring "SharePoint 101" training.  I only scored an Exhibit Hall badge, however, so I wasn't able to attend any of the workshops.  A handful of the scheduled workshop speakers were stranded on the East Coast as a result of the blizzard, but luckily the hotel was full of extremely knowledgeable stand-ins, and it sounds as if the workshops went off without a hitch.  Tomorrow we will move into the general SharePoint conference with keynotes by Tom Rizzo and Ted Pattison and technical classes by dozens of SharePoint MVPs and experts.  When I registered this afternoon, I was informed that attendance is expected to be an impressive 950+.  I haven't seen a crowd of that size yet, so my assumption is that most people will be filing in this evening and joining the general conference starting tomorrow.

SPTechCon Speaker Presentations Available for Download (The Bamboo Team Blog)
In my SPTechCon preview post on Monday I expressed my happiness at having successfully moved up my Wednesday flight to San Francisco to a Tuesday flight which should've been able to get out of D.C. in advance of round two of "snowmageddon."  Well, later that same day my Tuesday flight was canceled.   Not to worry though, I was able to get booked on a different Tuesday flight.  Until all Tuesday flights out of D.C. were canceled and I was (irony of ironies) booked back onto my original Wednesday flight.  To make a long story shorter, let's just say that I'm currently booked on a Thursday flight, but as blizzard conditions worsen, my hopes of that flight taking off are dimming with each falling snowflake.

Greetings from SPTechCon! (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As it turns out, I may be playing rookie reporter at SPTechCon this week since our lead blogger is currently stuck in D.C. due to the ongoing "snowmageddon."  Not only did the D.C. area get 2 feet of snow over the weekend, but what's expected to measure another foot is currently coming down.  It will be interesting to see what effect Mother Nature will have had on all of the East Coast travelers hoping to attend SPTechCon this week in San Francisco.  I traveled from St. Louis on the same plane as the team from fpweb.net, and we left a few inches of snow and frigid temperatures behind for a sunny clear day in San Francisco.
