Windows Phone 7 Spotlights SharePoint Collaboration (PCWorld)
An application that many users have never seen--Microsoft's SharePoint--plays a key role in Windows Phone 7 Series' Office Hub, the center of business activities in the new smartphone operating system. On a phone with rich social networking features, adding business collaboration through SharePoint seems only natural, if not obvious. Microsoft, however, might not be alone in offering this capability.

Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) Confirmed for March 2010 (Softpedia)
Microsoft will open up on the next iteration of Internet Explorer in just a month from now, but of course, the biggest question of IE8’s successor remains unanswered, namely if a preview of Internet Explorer 9 is to be made available for download. Users have already been able to read that IE9 was planned to come into the spotlight at MIX 10 since December 11th, 2009, right here on Softpedia. At that time, however, the Redmond company hadn’t offered any official confirmation that it was to deliver additional details on the browser it showcased at the Professional Developers Conference 2009 in Los Angeles.

Exploring Microsoft Office 2010 Beta (PC Pro)
Microsoft Office 2010 has reached its next milestone: namely, a full public beta test version. Now anyone who wants to can download and try out Office 2010 for themselves. All its component apps have been updated and they’re now more stable and polished, although there are still a few rough edges – and since this is beta code you can expect something to go wrong at some time, so you need to make sure that you can continue working if you do encounter problems.

Microsoft Attacks Google Apps ... on YouTube (eWeek Microsoft Watch)
They'll let anything onto YouTube these days. No, I'm not talking about the millionth video featuring a squirrel lip-syncing to Right Said Fred, but a set of Microsoft-created videos attacking Google Apps. I guess Google, which owns YouTube, really has no inclination to censor anything aside from content that violates copyrights; but watching the Microsoft videos play out next to that YouTube logo is like watching promos for a TV show like "Dexter" (produced by Showtime) playing on HBO or another rival channel.

Microsoft's Downwardly Mobile Plans for Enterprise (ZDNet)
Ancient sages said that there are three things that may not be known: from whence the wind comes, the mind of a woman, and Microsoft's mobile strategy. Those were misogynistic, pre-meteorological times. For some time now, we've had weather forecasts and gender studies — leaving only mobile strategy beyond the reach of even the keenest thinkers. Why did Microsoft's systems division constantly ignore mobile, even as the official line was integration and convergence? Who thought it acceptable that, in the age of the iPhone, Windows Mobile should have an interface largely inherited from Windows 3.1? Why was nothing happening?

Is Microsoft a Four-letter Word? (CNET)
Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Microsoft, once king of the software hill, has reached a new low, even as it shows signs of bouncing back to new life. The open-source world considers being likened to Microsoft as the ultimate insult, while the up-and-coming Web crowd is embarrassed to be associated with its stodgy forbear.

Google Gets Buzzed with a Class Action Lawsuit (CNET)
What is more surprising? The fact that Google claims it was taken aback by the negative reaction to its Buzz feature, the one that ventured to make public your most frequent e-mail contacts? Or the fact that a couple of law firms have got together to present Google with a class action lawsuit?

Office 2010 Application Compatibility Sweepstakes (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
Since announcing our public Beta, many folks on the Office team have been hard at work engaging with pre-release testers to find and fix any potential deployment issues IT departments may face with existing Office solutions once Office 2010 is released.  In addition to engaging on specific developer features like UI extensibility, we also started the Office 2010 Application Compatibility Program – here are excerpts from this blog post:

SPTechCon SFO 2010 Session Recordings (Meet Dux)
I had a great time at SharePoint Technology Conference in San Francisco last week in spite of my "almost-cancelled-trip" due to the massive snow storm in Washington DC.
As a result of my shortened trip, 2 out of the 4 sessions that I was scheduled to present was cancelled. Nevertheless, here's a six part SharePoint 101 recording that I facilitated at SharePoint Saturday Baltimore last July 2009.

Content Queries Using SharePoint Enterprise Search API (SharePoint Blues)
In an earlier post to SharePoint Blues Juho wrote about the challenge of – how to find anything from the sea of content. One way of solving this issue is to use SharePoint Enterprise Search API and the FullTextSqlQuery class. This class allows you to query SharePoint content using SQL syntax. FullTextSqlQuery queries always query from SCOPE(). In the where clause you set the target scope. Here is an example how the query is formed:

Squashing the SharePoint's SPHttpApplication Memory Leak (The MOSS-pit)
A (rather major) memory leak has been found in SharePoint, caused by the failure of SPHttpApplication objects to be properly cleaned up - read all about it in Todd Carter's great post The Sharepoint Sasquatch Memory Leak. I have quickly whipped up a WSP that implements Todd's fix and thought I would attach it here for anyone else who might find it useful.  It simply deploys a DLL to the GAC which implements the classes he describes in his post.  I have done it as a WSP so that the DLL will be auto deployed to all web front-ends used by the web application it is deployed to.

Creating Custom Themable CSS files for SharePoint 2010 (Wictor Wilén)
SharePoint 2010 has a completely rebuilt theme engine. Instead of having to modify .inf files, create folders and copy and pasting CSS files and images in the SharePoint root we can now create a theme in PowerPoint and upload it to the server. The default SharePoint CSS files are tagged with comments that tells SharePoint to substitute colors and images with the values from the theme. When you switch theme SharePoint generates a new set of CSS files and images with the result of this substation.

Guest Blog by Michael Womack - Adventures in Bamboo PM Central: Addressing SharePoint Admin Concerns (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Well, I had the meeting with our SharePoint Administrator, and we laid out and agreed upon the ground rules going forward.  The list of questions I had composed ahead of time was much appreciated and certainly helped us accomplish a lot in a short amount of time.  Since I am testing PM Central in our production environment, that was the hottest topic of discussion.  I was instructed to always err on the side of caution when performing any testing and, when in doubt about anything, ASK first before taking any action.  I was informed that in many cases, it is easier to prevent a problem than it is to fix it, especially when working in production.
