Open Source v SharePoint: The Trouble with Bundles (ComputerWorld)
"So if I can summarise this, would I be right in saying that Sharepoint does an awful lot of things adequately whereas your Open Source offerings do fewer things really well?" Thus spake a delegate at a recent 'Sharepoint' conference at which I was presenting an alternative Open Source e-learning stack which included Alfresco, Moodle and Mahara.

How to set up People Search in SharePoint 2010 (Apache)
Since I’m talking about Enterprise Search tonight at OKCSUG, I thought I would write up a quick post on the steps you need to follow in order to get People Search working in SharePoint 2010.  The critical piece of course is getting the User Profile Synchronizations service working.  There are plenty of posts about it, so I’m not going to go into the details of how to get that part of it work.  SharePointDevWiki and MSDN do a pretty good job of getting you started.  The main thing is you want your Forefront Services started and looking something like this.

SharePoint 2010 Development & Scripting (PCQuest)
SharePoint is one of Microsoft's most used server applications. It is used in Intranets, Extranets and business decision areas and even as a content management system for many public websites. SharePoint was available in different versions - Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 Standard Edition and MOSS 2007 Enterprise Edition.

How SharePoint 2010 Supports Mobile Access (CMS Wire)

Although Microsoft and its ad agency partners aren’t yet ready to divulge the actual ads, David Webster, the chief strategy officer in Microsoft’s central marketing group, offered some insights about what the company is thinking about on the ad front for 2010.

Q. What's Windows Azure? (WindowsITPro)
A. We're constantly hearing about "the cloud" and one of the cloud services from Microsoft  is the Windows Azure platform. However, many people are unsure what this is and how it compares to other cloud services.

PC Users Like Windows 7 -- and Windows XP (Sci-Tech Today)
Early users of Windows 7 like Microsoft's new OS -- but Windows XP users are also happy with their OS. Forrester Research found about 43 percent of Windows XP users don't have a reason to upgrade. Upgrades to Windows 7 have been ahead of previous Windows releases. Many Windows users avoided Vista and most upgrades will be from XP.

Google Gives Flash Some Hope for the Future (ZDNet)
Companies like Microsoft and Apple have been giving Adobe a bit of a hard time — not supporting Flash on their mobile devices, and blaming the plugin for being sub-par. With big players shunning Adobe, and technologies like Silverlight and HTML5 threatening to steal developers, something has got to happen.

Google and Microsoft Call for Greater Limits on Government Snooping (TG Daily)
Companies including Google, Microsoft and AT&T have launched a campaign group calling for restrictions on the government's access to private data. The Digital Due Process coalition says the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) was fine at the time, but that technical developments have left it "a patchwork of confusing standards that have been interpreted inconsistently by the courts".

SharePoint - Summing Calculated Columns By Groups (DVWP) (The SharePoint Hillbilly)
I had a problem… okay.. okay.. so I have many problems… but let’s focus on one in particular or this blog post would never end… okay? Thank you….So, I had an electronic timesheet where users entered hours for each day of the week. It also had a “Week Total” column which was a calculated column of the sum. The calculated column looked like this:

SharePoint Content Management (SharePoint Pro Connections)
When SharePoint 2007 first started being widely adopted, the question of whether it could be used to replace existing ECM solutions was often asked. The general consensus was that SharePoint 2007 was not necessarily the best choice for the corporate ECM backbone. However, when SharePoint 2007 is coupled correctly with a traditional ECM solution the two systems complement each other extremely well.

Okay this video is super duper cool! You’ve heard of bing.com right? Have you tried out the Silverlight maps on Bing? WHAT? YOU HAVEN’T!? REALLY!?! You should! Seriously, the Bing Silverlight maps are way way way cooler than their Google counterpart. They are simply mind-blowing.

2010 Rule of Thumb: Upgrade May be Easier but You Need to Plan for it (SharePoint Thoughts)
Quick show of hands... How many of you have been involved in an upgrade from 2003 to 2007? If you didn't raise your hand, consider yourself lucky!  Smile  Looking back at 2007's rollout, upgrade was a bear.  It hurt people, most pets, and probably affected polar ice thaw rates.  Why?  There was a huge difference in the underlying data structures.  No matter where you looked you probably ran into something that just didn't work after you hit the "go" button.
