SharePoint Limitations; Windows 7’s Worst Features; Google Eating Microsoft's Cash Cow?

Top News Stories SharePoint Has Its Limits - (CIO) SharePoint came about as an effort to bring Microsoft Office's usability to tools for electronic collaboration. Jeff Teper, the Microsoft vice president in charge of SharePoint development, says the company saw an opportunity with users who wanted to share their files but didn't need a heavyweight content management system such as EMC's Documentum. SharePoint 2010 integrates Microsoft's Performance Point business intelligence tools and its advanced search engine, called Fast, as well as strengthens SharePoint as a development platform.
SharePoint 2010: Using Taxonomy & Metadata to Improve Navigation & Browsing (CMS Wire) Metadata represents the foundation for a large range of functionality across sites in SharePoint. The goal of metadata lies not in the tagging of content itself, but rather in the potential it offers for the improvement of findability via navigation.
What's in Store for Office 2010? (InfoWorld) The big trend for applications in 2010 can be summed up in one word: collaboration. Nowadays, it's not enough for an app to help workers do their job; apps must also let workers work with each other and easily share information. Microsoft has clearly gotten the message, as Office 2010 will provide a big boost in collaboration abilities.
Is Google Eating Microsoft's Cash Cow? (Motley Fool) I'm guessing some of you remember those crazy dot-com era predictions that the spread of web-based applications would threaten Microsoft's Windows and Office monopolies. Things didn't quite work out that way, and during the last decade, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer laughed at those predictions all the way to the bank.
Global CIO: Microsoft Vs. VMware-Salesforce Shows Cloud's Biggest Value (InformationWeek) Here's what's most important about cloud computing: Speed. VMware and Salesforce just took a major-league swing at Microsoft's cloud computing platform with their new partnership, VMforce. More details below, but the net effect is that VMware and Salesforce are trying to make it much faster and easier for a developer to write sophisticated Java applications for businesses, and for companies to get that software up and running inside Salesforce's data centers.
Windows 7’s Worst Features (PC World) There’s a lot to love about the Windows 7 operating system: it’s fast, it looks great, and it has some cool features--like Jump Lists for quickly opening recently used files, Homegroup for sharing files between computers, and Aero Snap to help you quickly organize your open desktop windows.
Ballmer Previews Microsoft's Next Messenger (CNET) Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is giving a sneak peek at the next version of Microsoft's instant messaging program. The new Windows Live Messenger will add a number of features, including tabbed conversations, the ability to do video chats in HD quality, share Web sites, search results and other content types, as well as pulling in updates from other social networks.

Service Connection Points and Governance with SharePoint Server 2010 (Bill Baer) Keeping the trend going this week we'll look at Active Directory Markers in SharePoint Server 2010. Governance is one of the key planning processes that should occur when considering the deployment of any technology, and SharePoint Server 2010 provides a number of tools and resources to facilitate the product and technology aspects of governance, one of which is the concept of Active Directory Markers to manage and control the uncontrolled proliferation of SharePoint in the Enterprise.

Microsoft Updates Some pages fail to render properly after a large number of crawls in an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site (Microsoft Support) After a large number of crawls in an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, the total success count, error count and warning count numbers for a specific content source will be very large. This may cause an arithmetic overflow, and then it will cause the pages to fail to render properly. Specifically, the Crawl Log Administration pages and the Edit Content Source page are the affected ones. This issue is dependent on the number of items being crawled as well.
