Some Good News for Microsoft; Mobile Web Use Growing In U.S; Changing Government with Geeks

Top News Stories One-Stop-Page for Business Productivity Online Suite Deployments Now Live (Softpedia) A new online destination from Microsoft is designed to help streamline the deployment of a suite of the company’s Cloud-based offerings. Earlier this week, the software giant introduced the “Deploying Business Productivity Online Suite” page, set up to be a one-stop-site for customers looking to embrace BPOS. The promise from the Redmond-based company is that Microsoft Online Services provide the necessary tools to help customers migrate into the Cloud and away from on-premise deployments without putting a strain on existing resources.
Some Welcome Good News for Microsoft (NetworkWorld) After a week of bad news for Microsoft of possible layoffs and the embarrassing Kin debacle -- even the Edsel lasted three years to Kin’s six weeks -- the company is probably looking for good news anywhere it can get it. Netmarketshare may be Redmond’s new best friend. The Internet analytics firm reports that Internet Explorer’s market share among Web browsers once again edged past the 60 percent mark in June to 60.32 percent, after two months on the wrong side of the -- perhaps just symbolic -- mark.
Windows Phone 7 Gets Open Source Database (NetworkWorld) A UK-based mobile software developer has ported an embedded database product to Microsoft's Windows Mobile 7 operating system. The port creates an on-device database for individual Windows Phone applications, something so far missing from Microsoft's radically redesigned mobile platform. Perhaps best of all: it was really easy, at least for an experienced developer.
Mobile Web Use Growing In U.S. (InformationWeek) The number of Americans heading to the web on mobile phones or laptops is rising with African-Americans and Latinos ahead of whites in mobile Internet use. Overall, nearly six in 10 U.S. adults access the Internet wirelessly from a phone or laptop, up from 51% in April 2009, the Pew Internet & American Life Project said in a study released Wednesday. Breaking the number down by device, 47% of adults go online with a laptop using Wi-Fi or a mobile broadband card, while 40% use the Internet, email, or instant messaging on a mobile phone.
Microsoft Rank And File Felt "Embarrassment All Over Campus" From Kin Failure (Business Insider) Microsoft's Kin failure sank morale at the company's Redmond campus according to an employee who emailed us after the news broke. "Embarrassment all over campus from the rank and file about the Kin announcement," says this Microsoftie.
Learn Microsoft Software Through Virtual Labs (TMC.net) Those of you who support Microsoft software can face a laundry list of products that you need to learn, test, and deploy. From desktop applications like Windows 7 and Office to server programs like Windows Server and SQL Server, the company certainly can keep an IT pro busy. How can you examine and learn the different Microsoft products that you need to work with? One handy option that I often use is the company’s Virtual Labs service. Available through Microsoft TechNet, Virtual Labs are essentially online classrooms that let you quickly play with and learn different technologies through a series of step-by-step labs. These free labs can be of value whether you just want to familiarize yourself with a certain product or you need to actually deploy and support that product throughout your organization.
Changing Government and Tech With Geeks (Ocala.com) Talking about government and computer programming most likely doesn't evoke the feeling of "fun" for most Americans. But a group of Web geeks and technology leaders is trying to change that with a new nonprofit project, Code for America, which aims to import the efficiency of the Web into government infrastructures.

Managing Your Metadata (buckleyPLANET) When setting up your new SharePoint environment, one of the questions you’ll need to answer is centralized or de-centralized? Do you want to tightly control your environment, as you do with your external-facing portal, or do you want to enable the full capability of SharePoint and allow people to collaborate, ad hoc, as they see fit? Or maybe you want to do something in-between?
