Dancing On Google Wave's Grave; Looking Through Bing-colored Goggles; 10 Things Microsoft Did Right

Top News Stories SharePoint 2010: A Sheep in Wolf's Clothing? (ZDNet) Despite the many new features in the latest release of Microsoft's SharePoint collaboration product, the simple truth is that in web content management it is still some way off the pace, says Darren Guarnaccia. Now that the dust has settled after May's introduction of the latest installment of SharePoint, I think it's worth looking more closely at the web content management (WCM) parts of the suite.
Microsoft Partners Dance On Google Wave's Grave (ChannelWeb) Google's decision to kill off Google Wave is being hailed by Microsoft partners as proof that the communication and collaboration market is tougher to break into than it may seem. Google Wave, a mélange of e-mail, instant messaging and social networking, was seen as a dipping of toes into a space dominated by products like Microsoft Exchange and Sharepoint and IBM Lotus Notes. After launching it last May, Google this week halted development of Google Wave as a standalone product, due to weak adoption.
Microsoft to Issue Record Number of Patches (CNET) Microsoft will issue 14 security bulletins on Tuesday to plug 34 holes, including eight that are critical, in Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, SQL and Silverlight, the company said on Thursday.
Looking at the World Through Bing-colored Goggles (ZDNet) When I was in Seattle recently, I was struck by a conversation between a counter patron and bar tender who were swapping stories about their latest favorite technologies. Their mutual favorite was Google Goggles, a handy piece of technology that lets you take pictures from your phone’s camera and use them to search the Web.
10 Things Microsoft Did Right During Fiscal 2010 (Beta News) A month following the end of Microsoft's fiscal year and two weeks after announcement of record earnings, it's time to take a long look back at the company's FY2010 accomplishments. Some of these items will partially repeat from my calendar year 2009 list and early calendar 2010 list. Numbers 1 thru 6 are new; the others derive from the previous two lists. With that introduction, during fiscal 2010, Microsoft rightly:
Has Google Jumped the Shark? (Telegraph.co.uk) When a big software company starts investing in social, that’s when you know they’re in trouble. So when I saw the rumours this week that Google had bought Slide at an eyebrow-raising valuation of $182 million - after previously investing over $100 million in social gaming company Zynga - it got me thinking: has Google jumped the shark?
Gov 2.0 as Means Not End (O'Rielly Radar) It's often tempting to think that Gov 2.0 is common ground between those who always want smaller government and those who want government to help its citizens. To an extent, this is true: opening up services lets citizens and businesses do more for themselves, and means government doesn't have to grow for more things to happen. In some cases, government can even get smaller.
Army Sees Bright Future in New Acquisition Approach (Federal News Radio) The Army didn't just receive 25 new software tools for improving how the service works through its Apps for the Army contest. Maybe more importantly, it received solid proof that agile software development can work in the government. Lt. Gen. Jeff Sorenson, the Army's chief information officer, says the success of the competition will lead to a major change in how the service approaches certain kinds of technology creation in the future.
Around the Blogosphere How We Did It: ShowMe for SharePoint 2010 (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog) Not surprisingly, one of the most frequent requests from SharePoint customers is for information worker training and more comprehensive help for end users. This issue cuts across the rich, diverse, and powerful capabilities of SharePoint; it applies regardless of whether information workers use the platform for collaboration, insights, search, content publishing, community building, or assembling their own composite solutions. Given the successful release of SharePoint 2010, with its completely new user interfaces and its impressive array of new features, almost every organization that implements SharePoint will encounter this request for more comprehensive help and training. At Point8020 Limited, we have worked with the SharePoint team at Microsoft for many years to create official training courses, videos, evaluation guides, and other educational material. It seemed only natural, then, for us to provide an answer to this most common of requests from SharePoint customers and partners.
Why There is a Shortage of SharePoint Experts (elumenotion) This post started out as a short reply to a discussion on LinkedIn about this post: Why there is a shortage of SharePoint Experts. Once I hit the fourth paragraph I decided it made a better blog post then a comment. :) There is a shortage of SharePoint experts because the learning curve for the base technologies is large and the learning curve for the breadth of SharePoint functionality is even larger.
Is Social Media Making Us Dumb? (SharePoint PMP) The explosion of social media has been nothing but a phenomenon. Communities, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other networks allow us all to instantly share articles, thought leadership, books, tweets, PPTs, news, events, and more. And the more we engage in social media, the more I’m starting to wonder if social media is actually making us smarter and more enlightened OR if we are simply becoming dumber by the day.
