Is Your Application Suitable for Windows Azure? (Credera)
Some IT professionals describe cloud computing as an “amorphous” thing. It is hard to clearly understand what it is, and most importantly, to know if it works for your organization. The cloud is not only difficult to understand, but it is growing and changing at such a fast pace that it is hard to keep up with it and understand what it offers. Nonetheless, the cloud is not an ‘all or nothing’ deal; you need to assess the readiness of each application of your organization.

How Much Will a Windows 7 Migration Really Cost? (ZDNet)
Last week, the Gartner Group made some headlines (including this one from my ZDNet colleague Mary Jo Foley) with a provocative press release that tried to pin a price tag on the cost of migrating to Windows 7. The press release throws out four separate price tags, ranging from $1,205 to $2,069 per PC, with some confusing percentages to quantify overall IT budget increases. But in their zeal to come up with hard numbers, the press release adds more confusion than clarification to the topic. In some cases, the numbers just don’t add up.

Why Windows Mobile Still Makes Sense for Business Users (Channel Insider)
In the corporate world, all the talk about mobile solutions revolves around RIM’s BlackBerry, Apple’s iPhone, and Google’s Android OS. But there is still a major player in that space that doesn’t get the kind of respect that it might deserve: Windows Mobile. Now, it might sound rather ironic to include Windows Mobile, a dying platform, in the same sentence as some of the top mobile operating systems on the market today, but for the corporate world, it makes some sense. Windows Mobile is still widely used in that space. And although there are arguably better options available, some companies wouldn’t consider switching from Windows Mobile. Read on to find out what makes Windows Mobile still a somewhat useful tool to corporate users.

Cloud Is Not Rocket Science But It Is Computer Science (Sys-con)
For many folks in IT it is likely you might find in their home a wall on which you can find hanging a diploma. It might be a BA, it might be a BS, and you might even find one (or two) “Master of Science” as well. Now interestingly enough, none of the diplomas indicate anything other than the level of education (Bachelor or Master) and the type (Arts or Science). But we all majored in something, and for many of the people who end up in IT that something was Computer Science.

On Language: Putting Government 2.0 in Context (GovFresh)
Does the public need to understand what the term Government 2.0 means? Many look to my publisher, Tim O’Reilly, to explain, given that he has written eloquently about the topic and worked with *** O’Neill to convene the Gov 2.0 Summit last year. O’Reilly talked with CBS News this summer about what Gov 2.0 means to him. Others might ask the nation’s technology executives, US CIO Vivek Kundra and CTO Aneesh Chopra, both of whom participated in the Summit in Washington last summer and will join it again this year.

Dude, Where's My Apple iCar? (BusinessWeek)
Apple is announcing something next week, and everybody expects that announcement to involve new iPods, a new strategy for iTunes and possible a new direction for Apple TV. A FaceTime-capable iPod Touch would be nice. And 99-cent TV shows would probably make Apple a lot of money.

Architecting Your SharePoint 2010 Records Management Solution (End User SharePoint)
Firstly sorry for the almost month break between post! It has been a crazy month but we back ready to rock and roll with our Records Management solution in SharePoint 2010. In constructing our solution let’s begin with the very basics and consider some high level logical architecture advice for those creating an RM solution. Now this is a combination of my own personal opinion, Microsoft best practices, and some experience from out in the field.

SP 2010: Developing with the Word Automation Services in SharePoint Server 2010  (Tobias Zimmergren's thoughts on development)
In SharePoint 2010, there is a new Service Application called Word Automation Services. This Service Application is used to convert documents from Word to different formats. Word Automation Services can open about the same formats as Windows Word 2010 can:

Limiting People Picker Scope in SharePoint (SharePoint Blues)
There are many cases where you do not want the people picker to show all users in your Active Directory or LDAP user store. For example if you have separate web applications in the same farm for intranet and extranet, you do not want the extranet users to appear in the intranet’s people picker. This is only one layer in the intranet security, but simply sending permissions-related e-mails to extranet users can be a big mistake and should be prevented by technological means.

The 12 Networking Truths Applied to SharePoint (Enterprise 2.0 community)
When I was learning basic networking back in the late 90’s, I was introduced to a fun, yet insightful RFC that contained the 12 Fundamental Truths of Networking (RFC 1925).  In this post, I’d like to correlate those truths with SharePoint.  This post isn't entirely serious, but then again, perhaps it is.

BPC 2010: Dux Raymond Sy on 'SharePoint as a Gov 2.0 Platform' (The Bamboo Team Blog)
On Thursday morning at the BPC, Dux Raymond Sy presented a session on a relatively new topic both for him and for many of us in "SharePoint World": Gov 2.0 and how SharePoint is being leveraged as the platform to provide Gov 2.0 solutions to empower citizens, and to provide project transparency and collaboration between agencies and citizens.  This topic is of special interest to me, as I focus on the Federal Sector Sales at Bamboo Solutions and was looking forward to learning more about how the SharePoint platform is becoming a part of the Gov 2.0 landscape.

Microsoft Updates
Manual manipulation of the SharePoint disk based BLOB cache folder hierarchy is unsupported (Microsoft Support)
The SharePoint disk based cache for BLOBs (Binary Large OBjects) maintains a folder and file hierarchy on a local drive of the Web Front End servers. This hierarchy is mirrored in an in-memory index, that is persisted to disk each time the SharePoint Application Domain is shut down. Modifying or deleting files or folders from the disk based cache will result in a loss of synchronization between the disk cache and the information stored in the in-memory cache index. This mismatch will eliminate the performance benefits typically gained by using the BLOB cache, for the mismatched files. This will also place greater load upon the database server potentially impacting all database server operations. Therefore, any manual manipulation of the files or folders related to the BLOB cache is unsupported.
