Does Microsoft's Lync Hype Match Customer Desires? (NetworkWorld)
Customers eying Microsoft's Lync 2010 unified communications server need to take a step back and evaluate what's really new and whether they need it right now, down the road or not at all, experts say. On the one hand, the company offers multi-modal communications that are well integrated with its extremely popular business and collaboration products Office, SharePoint and Exchange -- a combination that could lead to more efficient ways of transacting business.

IE9 Cheating in Benchmark? It's Just Dead Code Elimination, Explains Microsoft (Fierce CIO)
A furor has erupted over apparent cheating by Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) 9 browser, which is still in platform preview at the moment. A developer curious about the near-instant completion of several subtests in the SunSpider JavaScript benchmarking test decided to make minor changes to it. The result was profound and saw IE9 slow down considerably, leading some observers to accuse the software giant of 'cheating' to get ahead in the popular test.

Windows at 25: A Tech King with Growing Competition (CNET)
When the first Windows operating system was introduced by Microsoft, Ronald Reagan was in the White House, John Hughes was introducing touching teen stereotypes in "The Breakfast Club," and a young singer named Madonna was hitting the road with "The Virgin Tour." Twenty five years later, Windows, Reagan, Hughes, and Madonna are still very much at the center of our tech, political, and pop culture discussions.

Business Tablet Boom Could Spell Doom for Windows (Laptop Magazine)
Tech analysts call devices like the iPad media tablets, because they were primarily designed for consuming content. But that’s not all they can do. Mobile professionals can edit Office documents on the go; insurance adjusters can use tablets to capture information in the field and send it back to the main office; and health care workers can access patient data while making their rounds. All of the above should scare the hell out of Microsoft, because “media tablets” are on the verge of exploding in the business market.

Secret Life of the Mobile User (PCWorld)
The stereotype is that the Millennial generation has pushed the use of mobile tech in business, creating the "bring your own device" phenomenon that has very quickly forced enterprises to let go of the corporate-issued-BlackBerry approach to controlling user technology. As it turns out, Baby Boomers -- today's executives and managers -- have led the charge. The median age of mobile workers is in fact 46, or eight years older than the average Facebook and Twitter user.

Update on WEAVE Government Data Visualization Software (O'Reilly Radar)
On Tuesday I heard the dynamic University of Massachusetts at Lowell professor Georges Grinstein talk about WEAVE (Web-based Analysis and Visualization Environment), a visualization tool for public data. One of the coolest things about WEAVE is the very idea of it. About 10 government agencies decided three years ago (before the Gov 2.0 movement was hot) to put their data out for easy public consumption, and to collaborate around it with the hope of eventually being able to combine all their data. These governments have combined into the Open Indicators Consortium to fund and guide development.

Wearing SharePoint On Your Sleeve (Office and SharePoint Blog)
I know, I know, it takes a lot to please you when it comes to IT t-shirts. Believe me, I've seen some dogs myself. And I think my employer has been responsible for a few of those. But recently I've seen some fairly good t-shirts in the SharePoint arena. Here's a sampling.

The Right Way and Wrong Way to Use the “Rating (0-5)” Field in a SharePoint List or Library (End User SharePoint)
If you wish to utilize Ratings on a SharePoint list or library, you might think that you can do so by simply adding the “Rating (0-5)” site column to your existing list, library or content type. In fact, SharePoint will allow you to do that, however doing so may or may not provide the intended results. As you may already know, the proper way to enable ratings, is from the list’s settings page. Click on the “Ratings settings” link and simply select the “Yes” option for: “Allow items in this list to be rated?”, as shown below:

How to Improve Server Utilization and Reduce Infrastructure Costs with Virtualization (Bill Baer)
Predicting resource requirements for a new business application, especially one that is customer-facing is a tricky task. It's hard to know if you have the new Facebook or your hands. You make your best estimates, then spend money on new hardware and hope your estimates were right. Only actual usage tells whether your server infrastructure is running efficiently.

A Tour of SharePoint 2010 on Windows Phone 7 (SharePoint 2010)
One of the few downsides of working closely with SharePoint, and being part of the Microsoft stack, is having to deal with an office full of iPhone fanboys. Being one of the few (OK, maybe the only one) in the office that does not own an iPhone, it’s a pain in the neck to have to put up with coworkers who “pinch” their mobile phone during meetings. So, I was one of the first brave souls to get the new HTC Surround that runs the shiny new Windows Phone 7 Mobile OS. Frankly, I wasn't sure what to expect since the press coverage ranges from “it’s an iPhone killer…” to “it just sucks…”  I really wanted to check out how the new Microsoft SharePoint Workspace Mobile works with our internal portal.
